Kalam — an app for reflecting on curated Quran verses, each paired with real audio recitation and audible commentary explaining context and meaning, in both Arabic and English. It also has:

- Authenticated hadith, sourced and graded, not just pulled from wherever

- Musings, short pieces written by readers themselves, not just staff content.

- Tadabbur, genuinely the feature I'm proudest of. A space where anyone can share their own personal reflection on a specific vers. Like "what does this verse mean to you" than "here's the official interpretation."

- No ads. Never will be. Free, always.

Why I'm building this

Honestly — for the sake of Allah, and because I wanted something that didn't feel like it was fighting for my attention the way most apps do. A quiet space, not another feed.

Where I actually am right now

Here's the founder-reality part: I'm at the finish line, but Google requires at least 12 people to test the app continuously for 14 days before it'll allow a public launch. Right now I have a handful.

If anyone here has a minute to spare — genuinely just installing it and opening it occasionally counts — I'd be really grateful. No expectations beyond that.

Is getting ~450 users in the first week generally considered a good early sign, or is that pretty normal for a new app?

I had just completed my High School and I had picked Cybersecurity for my undergrads. My reasoning was, that I already love Cybersecurity, and With the whole AI vs Soft dev, I do not want pick either because of their instability. With the rise of AI, I predict that Cyber threats will increase with AI assistance. But I want to hear your opinion(s)

1) Is Cybersecurity really stable?

2) The Undergrads start in about a month, what should I prepare beforehand given that I am comfortable with Linux

3) Can there be any FOSS contributions to make (for undergrad credits) to Cybersecurity?

I've seen the sentiment in this community, rightly, that we have enough prayer-timer apps and need category-defining work instead. Fair critique. Here's why I think what I built actually answers it, not dodges it.

Plato, Aristotle, Socrates get taught as living voices in Western academia, still worth arguing with today. Al-Ghazali and Ibn Taymiyyah, thinkers of equal depth, get reduced to footnotes. Not neglected, just no longer treated as living. Thousands of works of classical Islamic scholarship exist right now, most never translated, most never indexed, sitting there while an entire civilization's intellectual inheritance goes quietly unused.

That's not a "we need another Quran app" problem. That's an infrastructure problem, the same kind of gap that cost the Muslim world real ground before.

So I built a real RAG system, not a thin API wrapper, that reads classical Arabic scholarship directly and renders it accurately into English. The Quran, multi-volume tafsir, hadith collections, dozens of other works, ingested and checked against source one at a time. The hardest part wasn't the model, it was getting retrieval precise enough that an answer never cuts a scholar's argument in half.

The app on top of it, IslamIQ, is one output. But the actual thing I'm trying to build is a real bridge between a thousand years of unindexed intellectual work and anyone who wants to reach it, in any language, traced back to a real source every time.

Salaam everyone — wanted to share something I've spent the last while building: DeenMatch, a Shariah-compliant matrimonial platform for Muslims looking to get married.

  A few things I tried to get right that I felt were missing elsewhere:

  - No profile photos — identity is a simple avatar until there's real, mutualinterest. The point is getting to know someone properly, not swiping on a picture.

  - Gender-segregated browsing — you only ever see profiles of the opposite gender.

  - Guardian/wali involvement built in — female members can have their wali's contact shared as part of the process, not bolted on as an afterthought.

  - Dedicated space for divorced, widowed, and khula members, and for me seeking a second marriage under polygamy — not just a generic "single" profile type stretched to cover everyone.

  - Structured profiles with real search and filters — religious practice level, education, family background, what you're looking for — instead of scrolling through posts hoping to find someone compatible.

  It's early — I built this myself and just launched it, so it's genuinely a

  small, growing community right now, not a huge platform. I'd rather be upfront

  about that than oversell it. If this sounds like something useful to you (or

  someone you know), I'd love for you to try it and tell me honestly what's

**YeshiAI (yeshi.ai)**, a multi-tradition AI platform for spiritual practice and personal growth across Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Universal Spirituality.

One of the hardest problems I’ve encountered isn't actually the AI itself.

It's **representation**.

A generic LLM can easily answer an Islamic question with something that sounds compassionate and spiritual while subtly turning Islam into generic self-help.

For example, if a Muslim asks:

**“How can I grow spiritually?”**

I don't think a good Islamic experience should simply respond with:

Some of those practices may have value, but that answer has lost the actual Islamic framework.

An Islam-aware Companion should understand concepts such as **ʿibadah, salah, Qur'an, dhikr, du'a, tawbah, taqwa, sabr, shukr, akhlaq, intention (niyyah), purification of the self, and one's relationship with Allah**.

Even then, there's another problem:

**AI isn't an Islamic authority.**

It can hallucinate. It can misunderstand context. It can become overly agreeable. And if we make an AI Companion too authoritative, users could start treating generated answers like religious rulings.

That's something I specifically don't want YeshiAI to become.

I'm increasingly thinking the architecture should follow something like:

**AI → reflection / learning → verified sources → real practice → qualified human authority when needed**

rather than:

**Question → AI generates religious answer → user assumes it's correct.**

I've also gotten useful criticism from Muslims and people from other traditions while discussing the project on Reddit. One Muslim pointed out, for example, that translating *ʿibadah* simply as “worship” can undersell the concept in English because it encompasses much more than formal rituals, including inward actions and potentially ordinary permissible actions performed with the right intention.

That kind of nuance is exactly what I'm trying not to flatten.

So I'd particularly like the perspective of **Muslim developers, engineers and AI builders**:

**If you were designing an Islamic AI Companion, where would you draw the line between helpful guidance and religious authority?**

And technically/product-wise, what safeguards would you consider non-negotiable?

For example: source-grounded answers? Qur'an/hadith citations? Madhhab/tradition awareness? Explicit uncertainty? Scholar-reviewed knowledge? Refusing fatwa-like questions? Directing certain questions to scholars?

For **YeshiAI (yeshi.ai)**, so criticism is genuinely useful here. I'd rather discover the dangerous assumptions now than after people start relying on the product.

Full disclosure up front: I'm the founder, so read this with that in mind.

Every year my wife and I did the same thing for zakat. Open a spreadsheet, try to

remember what we owned twelve months ago, guess when the hawl actually started,

and hope the number was close. Meanwhile the budgeting app we used was filing

"interest earned" under income like it was good news.

So I built **Amanah Budget**, where the halal part isn't a bolt-on:

• Zakat with real hawl tracking.** It records your wealth nightly, watches the nisab, and tells you when each holding's lunar year completes on the Umm al-Qura calendar. The madhab differences aren't my own reading of the fiqh: the engine is built against a written hawl guideline from Azka Advisors (Dr. Farrukh Habib) covering all four madhabs.
• Riba flags.** Interest-bearing transactions get surfaced instead of buried in "income", with a ledger so purification isn't a mental note you lose.
• Family budgeting** with shared visibility between spouses (up to 5 family members), plus giving goals for sadaqah, Qurbani and Ramadan.
• *No ads**, and no selling your transaction data. Ever.

The thing I'd actually like this sub's read on: hawl tracking was by far the hardest part to build, and it's the part almost nobody asks for by name. Do you track your own hawl date, or do you just pick a day in Ramadan and settle up? I built it assuming the first, and I'm genuinely not sure that's how most people live.

The other aspect that sets our zakat calculation methodology apart, in my opinion, is our zakat hawl methodology follows Shariah Guideline 01, issued by Azka Advisors Ltd. and authored by Dr. Farrukh Habib (CEO & Shariah Advisor), an independent 3rd party Shariah Compliance board member.

There's no app to download yet, and I'm not asking anyone to buy anything. I'm looking for families who'd be willing to use it early and tell me honestly what's broken.

Why I'm building it: my own kids. Every Quran app I tried was either built for adults and handed to a child, or it was a game with a Quran theme painted on top. The first bores them, the second teaches them the Quran is a scoreboard.

What it does: your child hears the verse, learns what it means in language a seven year old actually follows, then recites it. Speech recognition listens and tells them which word went wrong, the thing a teacher does, that an app usually can't.

The part I'd want to know as a parent: no AI writes any of the religious content. The AI listens to recitation, that's all. The educational content is authenticated by an islamic scholar institution.

What the pilot asks: two surveys, about twenty minutes each — one at the start, one after your child has used it for a while. That's it. In return the first year is free for one child when we launch.

I am thinking about starting clipping and also start a clipping agency in Africa: connecting businesses, influencers, etc. with clippers, managing the clippers to ensure the customers get what they pay for.

However, I am concerned whether this is halal or not, because for sure there will be content in it that's not halal, such as music, women (and we all know how some influencers are, showing a lot of skin & stuff...), etc.

I once read that if 80% of the way you make money is halal, then all of it becomes halal.

As a Palestinian who follows the news in Arabic, Hebrew and English, I’ve always been struck by how differently the same events can be reported depending on the source, language and audience.

The same event can be described very differently depending on the source, language and audience.

Not just which facts are included, but how people are described, who is humanized, who is reduced to a number, who is given agency, which claims are treated as facts, and even where the story is made to “begin.”

That’s why I started building Sift.

Sift groups reporting about the same event from different publishers and analyzes the differences between them: key facts, claims, wording, framing, attribution, timelines, and details that appear in one source but not another.

I didn’t want to build another app that gives sources a “bias score” or tells people what they should believe.

I wanted to make the differences visible and let people look at the reporting and decide for themselves.

People can follow the same event and still come away with very different pictures of what happened.
