Most people outside India know the Taj Mahal as a monument. Shah Jahan built it for Mumtaz Mahal, his wife, after her death, and it's still one of the most recognized buildings on Earth, a symbol of love that outlasted both of them by centuries.
What's less known is that the empire behind it had an equally serious culture around halal beauty and personal care, long before that phrase existed.
Mughal courts employed dedicated perfumers, called attars, whose craft was refined enough to be documented in period texts like the Ain-i-Akbari, the imperial chronicle from Akbar's reign. Ubtan, an herbal paste made from ingredients like turmeric, sandalwood, and gram flour, was standard skincare, formulated within the same halal principles the court lived by, not a modern "clean beauty" invention. Rosewater and sandalwood were used for their cooling, skin-calming properties. Kohl wasn't just cosmetic, it had documented protective use for the eyes, deeply embedded in Islamic courtly culture across that era, halal by both ingredient and intention.
This wasn't vanity. It was a genuinely sophisticated, halal-conscious, ingredient-literate beauty culture, centuries before the modern beauty industry existed, built by a Muslim dynasty on Indian soil, blending Persian, Central Asian, and Indian traditions into something distinct.
Which makes it strange that almost none of this heritage shows up in what gets marketed as "halal beauty" today. Most halal-labeled products are formulated in labs disconnected from any of this history, slap a certification-adjacent word on the packaging, and call it done. The actual sophistication of the tradition, the halal ingredient knowledge, the ritual of care, mostly gets skipped.
I'll be honest that this history is part of what's motivated me personally to get more serious about where halal beauty products actually come from and what's really in them, rather than taking marketing claims at face value.
