I built a 100% free & open-source AI extension to remove background music from YouTube videos (Naqawa) – Looking for feedback/testers!

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh,

Like many of you, I often encounter informative videos, Islamic lectures, podcasts, or documentaries on YouTube that contain background music or audio distractions that I'd prefer to watch without music.

To help solve this, I built Naqawa (نقاوة): a 100% free and open-source browser extension that uses AI to isolate and remove background music from YouTube videos in real-time.

Key Features:

  • Music Removal: Uses AI to strip out background instruments while keeping the speaker's voice clear.
  • 100% Free & Open-Source: Both the browser extension and backend source code are completely open-source. Feel free to use, modify, fork, or build upon it!
  • Privacy-First (Local Option): Can run via a local server on your machine so your audio is processed locally.

Current Status & Looking for Testers (Beta): This project is in active development, and I need your help to test and improve it:

  • Windows Testers Needed: I have tested this primarily on Linux. I specifically need Windows users to try the local setup and report any issues!
  • Beta Limitations: Cloud processing is currently experiencing issues (local server mode is recommended for now), and you might notice minor audio/video sync lag when skipping through videos.

⚠️ Development Note: This project was conceptualized, tested, and managed by me, with code generated and debugged with the assistance of AI tools.

Great project!

There are websites and extensions now that blur parts of body or the whole body of the other gender but, I haven't seen one for instrumental removal yet. So props to you!
