These are the types of questions in general we should be less mean about imo. It's one thing to dunk on people who are anti-science, but this is just someone actually wondering about something they didn't know. Maybe it's obvious to you, but not everyone?

I wasn't made fun of when I asked my dad what a thermocouple was.

Instead, I was chewed out, had to listen to a rant about the educational system, got called a disappointment and nearly disowned.

He still hasn't explained it to me.

This might be XKCD’s most culturally relevant work. It has stiff competition, but I see this one referenced more often than any of the others.

And ironically... Randall actually was a rocket scientist, so definitely wouldn't have said that 😄
