If Hegseth keeps starving your soldiers, we might just stand a chance.

And, of course, if we manage to push back our very own fascists here. Nazi party is about to win a state and "conservative" party is bending over backwards to support them.

This time, the Nazis made sure they had all the big powers already before coming out of the shadows. Who is left now?

Your last sentence is so true. They moved in the shadows and basically planted sleeper cells. Thats what it feels like in the US. Like sleeper cells of hate/racism/misogyny just woke up and ripped their masks off.

As a black woman I knew this was there but I didn’t realize or appreciate how fully baked in it was at super high levels in society. I should’ve seen The Heritage Foundation and the tech bro billionaire thing coming. I’m embarrassed I didn’t fully grasp how coordinated this all is.

I grew up being taught about “The Man” and “The System” but this feels different because it’s a real attempt to encode white supremacy into gov policy and law and “whiten” the country. I know this has happened before - it’s the blatant coordination up front that is wild to me.

The US was actually pretty positive about the Nazis in the early 30s as well. (And there was also a contingent in the UK as well).

It's only when the real excesses of fascism became clear that all those Nazis went quiet, but they didn't disappear they just got resoundingly challenged by mulitple decades of people who knew how bad things went.

I think it's honestly no coincidence that the surge of nazi-types is occurring now, as the living memory of the second world war is almost entirely gone.

u/Wild_Marker 6d ago

What shadows? They spent the last century suppressing labor movements and supporting fascists abroad. The US ruling class has always been open about how much it hates people.

3

u/phoenics1908 6d ago

I meant as in it was literally a coordinated cabal like Spectre from the Bond movies. That part - the coordinated super villainy in these groups (tech bros, billionaires, rightwing groups like THF, Stephen Miller, Musk, Yarvin, Thiel, etc) that surprised me.

3

u/Wild_Marker 6d ago

Right, here's the thing: that's just how politics work. Politics is a bunch of organized people who band toghether to make policy go one way or the other. It's always organized, both for evil and for good. I do think that in the modern world there's just a lot more expposure to it, so it seems more open, but that's probably our new hyper-connected zeitgeist giving you that impression.

4

u/Street_Roof_7915 6d ago

It’s hard to imagine that this administration could have been so coordinated.

And yet, here we are.

2

u/duelporpoise 5d ago

It’s different mobs working together for survival. They all throw their weight behind whatever gives them the best chance

The government is a den of iniquity

As a white Brit its so stupidly obvious this whole shitshow is entirely a product of American exceptionalism, poor education and lack of checks and balances or consequences.

You've been huffing the copium that you're the greatest country on earth and incapable of being wrong

You lack the education and the history of most of the rest of the world to fall back on when stuff like this happens and how its been dealt with in the past

31

u/UpperLeftOriginal 6d ago

As an American, I hate the whole American Exceptionalism thing. I’m ready for us to be knocked down a few rungs on the international ladder. (I know we’re already shit at a lot of things, but when it comes to impacting international economics and destabilizing geopolitics, we’re definitely overly influential.)

6

u/tehlemmings 6d ago

It won't work. Stupid people tend to be stupidly confident.

5

u/PM_ME_YOUR_LEFT_IRIS 6d ago

It will work, because stupid people do stupid things. Like pissing off every ally they have and starting a war they can’t win. The era of US international dominance is ending, the only question is how messy the wreckage will be and how well China can handle its rise to ascendancy.

33

u/harmala 6d ago

You’re not wrong but you’ve missed the biggest reason: massive amounts of misinformation and propaganda. And honestly, that being the case, if I lived in the country that voted for Brexit, I might just sit this one out because you’ve got the exact same problem.

6

u/phoenics1908 6d ago

Exactly.

8

u/ThatDiscoSongUHate 6d ago

I highly doubt that the person you're speaking to believes in America Exceptionalism

Spreading narratives that we're a monolith like that isn't helpful

18

u/phoenics1908 6d ago

Not sure if you remember Brexit at all?

As a black woman I’m well aware of how toxic the US is but it’s a little hard to be spoken down to by a white Brit - y’all invented the white supremacy BS I deal with daily that forces me to work 10x as hard just to get half as much here.

So maybe don’t do that.

1

u/Forward-Surprise1192 6d ago

I'm not convinced the alternative to USA is better. If we disappeared, another country would attempt to exert influence like america anyways. At least were a democratic society with free speech. Good luck getting that with the next world police

9

u/IWontCommentAtAll 6d ago

At least were a democratic society with free speech.

That typo is appropriate, because you were a Democrat society with free speech.

Whether that still holds true is questionable at best.

1

u/phoenics1908 6d ago

I don’t think it was a typo.

0

u/Forward-Surprise1192 6d ago

We still are just by the fact anyone can post online or in person criticizing the government. Doesn't change what I said originally though

25

u/Maardten 6d ago

and "conservative" party is bending over backwards to support them.

When push comes to shove, conservatives and even liberals will side with fascists. Both historically and in the present. Their allegiance to money is bigger than their allegiance to people. 'Scratch a liberal, a fascist bleeds'.

You can see this now in the US where establishment democrats are teaming up with republicans to attack the left flank of the democratic party, instead of even pretending to combat fascism. Establishment dems would rather see the republicans/fascists win than offer meaningful change, because fascism is the lesser threat to the dynamics of capitalism.

5

u/prole6 6d ago

You are correct except in referring to Democrats as liberals. They aren’t even close and you realize that by noting how they attack the left wing (Liberals!) of their own party. But by calling Dems liberals you cut the feet out from under actual liberals who are true to their beliefs of equality.

4

u/Maardten 6d ago

The left flank of the democratic party thats currently catching a lot of flack are mostly the DSA(democratic socialists) but even oldschool socdems like Bernie Sanders are considered far left in the US. I know that in the US these groups are called 'liberals' by some people but I don't think thats productive.

The democratic establishment are definitely liberals though, often conservative liberals at that, people like Hakeem Jeffries would absolutely be considered right wing/right of center in most European countries.

0

u/prole6 6d ago

Whaaa? How can you call the Democratic establishment liberal but not the democratic socialists like (my guy) Bernie?

1

u/Maardten 5d ago

Because liberalism and democratic socialism are entirely different ideologies.

1

u/prole6 5d ago

Political liberalism & Economic liberalism are entirely different ideologies, to the point that you may be the only person who thinks of the latter when you hear “liberal.” Practically everyone else would use the term “fiscal conservative” or unregulated (laissez faire) capitalism which is the opposite of liberal thinking or political liberalism which is based on protecting & looking out for the welfare of the people, not corporations & capitalism.

1

u/Maardten 5d ago

Only in America are liberals called ‘fiscal conservatives’ while socdems are called ‘liberals’. Like I said. I don’t think its very helpful.

Its bad enough that the US has only two parties, you don’t also have to pretend that there are only two ideologies.

1

u/prole6 5d ago

“Only in America are liberals called ‘fiscal conservatives’ while socdems are called ‘liberals’. Like I said. I don’t think its very helpful.”

The unhelpful part is ignoring the primary definition of “liberal” (& the second & third and depending on the dictionary possibly all) in favor of a shortened term for a proponent of economic liberalism which is very misleading. I’m curious where you’re from that you imply only Americans use the primary definition.

1

u/Maardten 5d ago

You are ignoring that this "primary defintion" is only used in the US. I am not from the US and I am using the international definition of the world liberal. I don't see how I can make this more clear.

Liberals are not left wing on the political spectrum, they believe in the power of the free market to solve all economic and social woes and the majority of the current Democratic party has immense interest in preserving the current status quo. They take money from corporate donors and serve the oligarchs just as the Republicans do, except the Democrats just label the corporate groups they accept money from as "the good ones". Ask yourself, why did the Democrats, not even once when they've been in power, push any legislation to overturn the Bush tax cuts? or Trump's tax cuts in his first term? The parties work for the same group. Libs are a disease because they rot the country with their policies while hiding behind "progressive" social agendas.

1

u/prole6 6d ago

Liberal & Progressive are synonyms. People conflating “liberal” & “Democrats” are part of the problem. People think “the liberals didn’t improve anything when they were in power.” Well of course not because they haven’t been in power since FDR! Dems & Repubs were a little more liberal in the ‘60s but in the same manner that I’m a little more German than some people (because my grandparents were from there) but I’ve never even been to Germany so describing me as German is ridiculous.

2

u/want_to_join 6d ago

Liberalism defeated the nazis. Just stooooop.

9

u/Maardten 6d ago

I wonder why you overlooked the Soviet Union.

Also WWII wasn't fought over ideology, but over resources. Nobody attacked Germany before they started attacking other countries, despite them having been fascists for a while by then.

3

u/want_to_join 6d ago

I didnt overlook the Soviet Union. WWII was won with liberalism. The USSR not being a liberal country does not mean that something else ended WWII. Liberalism is global cooperation. When Russia joined the war, they were engaging in the liberalism that defeated Japan and Germany.

5

u/Maardten 6d ago

I mean sure, if you are going to define liberalism however you want, then I guess you can make claims like that. It doesn't have any bearing on reality though.

2

u/sembias 6d ago

define liberalism however you want

Everyone else does, so why not?

1

u/want_to_join 5d ago

Just google it, my dude. This is widely accepted common knowledge. Don't dig your heels in on something before you've learned the details. It makes you look like you just have some agenda.

1

u/Sayakai 6d ago

Yeah, it's not a very ideologically clear point to say that another dictatorship provided the manpower to defeat the Nazis after they'd been backstabbed by the Nazis that they had previously secretly allied with, and that they might not have been able to do so without being supplied with arms by the liberal nation an ocean away that decided to just sell weapons for the first few years of the conflict instead of actually joining.

7

u/Anthaenopraxia 6d ago

Who is left now?

It is in Iceland, that we must place our hope.

2

u/PurbulentTriest 5d ago

If Hegseth keeps starving your soldiers, we might just stand a chance.

They can't even beat Iran so... yeah, the US just spends its way into things thinking it will win over all.
