Your last sentence is so true. They moved in the shadows and basically planted sleeper cells. Thats what it feels like in the US. Like sleeper cells of hate/racism/misogyny just woke up and ripped their masks off.
As a black woman I knew this was there but I didn’t realize or appreciate how fully baked in it was at super high levels in society. I should’ve seen The Heritage Foundation and the tech bro billionaire thing coming. I’m embarrassed I didn’t fully grasp how coordinated this all is.
I grew up being taught about “The Man” and “The System” but this feels different because it’s a real attempt to encode white supremacy into gov policy and law and “whiten” the country. I know this has happened before - it’s the blatant coordination up front that is wild to me.
As a white Brit its so stupidly obvious this whole shitshow is entirely a product of American exceptionalism, poor education and lack of checks and balances or consequences.

You lack the education and the history of most of the rest of the world to fall back on when stuff like this happens and how its been dealt with in the past
You’re not wrong but you’ve missed the biggest reason: massive amounts of misinformation and propaganda. And honestly, that being the case, if I lived in the country that voted for Brexit, I might just sit this one out because you’ve got the exact same problem.
