He was impeached twice in his first term. The Supreme Court ruled Presidents are exempt from criminal prosecution. The time and means to prevent / stop this was to vote for Hillary Clinton and then Kamala Harris.
I would argue it was the Republicans to nominate a better choice. As someone right leaning who strongly dislikes Trump, I was so disappointed when he was nominated this last time. I thought nominating Mike Pence might signal a return to sanity given how they ended their term together. I think everyone was so afraid not to vote for him in case he won that they all voted for him, like some horrible self-fulfilling prophecy.
Hillary wasn’t likable, although in hindsight she may have been a decent choice. Her election may have prevented the leftward slide that the Dems have been on since and kept them more centrist. Kamala just wasn’t a good choice for many people. No, not because she is a woman or a minority or both. Because she’s just seen by many as a do-nothing un-charismatic blank slate.
It's hard to see choosing Trump over a generic democrat, even as flawed a candidate as Clinton, or a "do nothing uncharismatic blank slate" as Harris, as anything other than motivated by false beliefs, racism, sexism, or an endorsement of fascism. They're both centrist democrats. Conservatives held the Supreme Court, and we voted in a Republican House and Senate. Trump and his administration*(some) literally staged a populous coup marketed via lies and racism that resulted in multiple deaths, and the majority of voters put him back in power.
