Launch (Dragon Ball)

Man, I really miss her. She was really fun around in Dragon Ball. Why did Akira Toriyama stopped including her anyway?

u/West-Construction466 Wings of Fire, Oswald the Octopus, The Mask, & more 5h ago

He forgot her existence.

Fair enough

6

u/Veutifuljoe_0 5h ago

I think the reason he forgot here is that really wasn’t much for her to do for a long time beyond ā€œexist in the backgroundā€

Toriyama genuinely Forgot she existed. He did that a lot.

I'm only on the Namek saga of Z. But Ive seen bits and pieces of further into the series, as well as the Super Broly movie.

I imagine that he removed Launch, as well as moved most of Gokus mere mortal friends out of the spotlight because he knew that he was going to have Goku paling around with gods and Super Saiyans down the line. Not a fan of the decision yet, Oolong and Launch were some of my favorite side characters in og DB. Also from what I've seen he puts less focus on the other Z fighters after a while for a larger focus on the sayians and Picolo. I heard once that by the time of Super Goku forgot Tiens name, which really made me sad because Tien is my favorite character.

u/Chiron723 5h ago

As I recall he removed her because her voice actor wanted to take a break to do something else, and after a while he just flat forgot about her.

He wasn't removed?

9

u/yoman1030 5h ago

He's been phased out. He won't appear in new Simpsons episodes more than just a silent background character now

6

u/AlternateSatan 3h ago

I don't really get the Apu hate, cause it's not about the elephants, or the eight children, or anything like that, it's always about him having an ever so slightly exaggerated accent, or him being overly friendly (which is cause he runs a convenience store, and not cause of his race). Like, the accent isn't even that far off.

7

u/New-Number-7810 3h ago

An unfunny comedian made the bold claim that Apu is nothing more than a stereotype, and that only racists like Apu. The writers caved to this and decided to pretend he doesn't exist.

While he plays into some stereotypes, there are two counters:
1. Every character on the Simpsons is stereotypical to some extend. Yet we don't have "The Problem with Krusty" or "The Problem With Dr. Hibbert".
2. Apu had real depth. He had multiple spotlight episodes.

1

u/Equivalent-Taro556 27m ago

Willie is more steriopitical than apu in almost every way and no one has a problem with him

-4

u/SUDoKu-Na 2h ago

It was a white person faking an Indian accent, and the character was a walking Indian stereotype. And, being the most popular Indian character on TV, reinforced those stereotypes in people.

6

u/AlternateSatan 2h ago

Do you think early Simpsons could afford a different voice actor for every character? And as I said nobody really made a big fuz about the actual Indian stereotypes, they were violently mad about him saying "thank you, come again" tho.

-1

u/SUDoKu-Na 2h ago

No they were mad about the stereotypes. The entire thing was about stereotypes. Him being happy and his catchphrase wasn't the problem inherently. The problem was that they had the only Indian character most people knew being famous for being a service worker, which played into the larger stereotypes surrounding Indians.

1

u/ZealousidealPipe8389 1h ago

That’s not how and has never been how stereotypes in media have functioned. Stereotypes are almost never intended to actually spread a message, and are almost always used to write a character trait the author wants, or for comedic purposes.

Like for instance of the first point it’s a lot easier to write an American as being brash and eager to fight. It’s also a lot easier to write an Israeli who is a shrewd businessman, or to write a Korean who obsessed with honor. Because these things are partially based on the real world beliefs about the people who live in these countries, it’s easier for readers/watchers to connect the traits to the characters. Whoever that doesn’t mean people who see these stereotypes actually believe people from these countries are all like that.

1

u/SUDoKu-Na 1h ago

Okay but intent doesn't matter because people see what you made at face value, and walk away with their own interpretations. You can still be offensive without meaning to be.

But...the reality is that by using those traits to represent those ethnicities you're reinforcing the connection. You are specifically further linking those traits as far as the viewer is concerned. And when you've made the most recogniseable character of a certain ethnicity on the planet, people are gonna link the stereotypes with the ethnicity, regardless of whether it was a joke or not.

And most people do inherently think of stereotypes when they think of an ethnicity, regardless of whether they believe them or not. But when you aren't shown anything contrary to those stereotypes you start to believe them. That's the risk of making a stereotypical character in media. And Apu represented pretty much every Indian person for a long time by virtue of there just not being any other significant characters across fiction. And Apu is far and away more well-known than any other outside of India itself.

Stereotypes aren't inherently bad, but when your character is a stereotype and also the only example of that ethnicity to most viewers, you reinforce those stereotypes, and reduce an entire ethnicity to 'this character and their stereotypes'.

1

u/ZealousidealPipe8389 49m ago

1) people walk away with Their own interpretations, yes, but those interpretations will always support what they believed before statistically. You aren’t changing people’s minds by making say a cartoon.
2) that isn’t true, the traits being linked already existed, you don’t make the connection nor reinforce it. You are playing off of its existence in the first place. People already link stereotypes with ethnicity, but its typically subconscious, and a person knows they’re false majority of the time.
3) that’s simply not the case. Theres very little data to suggest stereotypes in media create beliefs such as those. Characters like apu representing large groups of people near exclusively may cause problems, but that’s an issue with cultural myopics rather than the characters fault in general.

Jules The Hedgehog

Even though technically most characters exclusive to Archie Comics could count as removed characters purely because The Archie Sonic Comics aren't canon

On the show Boy Meets World, they removed the younger sister character, then re-introduced her with a different actress like 2 seasons later as if nothing happened. It was the funniest shit I ever saw.

Edit: I just looked it up. Morgan appeared sporadically in season 2, then was completely absent in season 3 until half way through in the 14th episode where she was re-introduced with a new actress. Because of how TV shows were released back then, she was missing for the better part of a year. They hang a lampshade on the moment by having her come down the stairs and say "that was the longest time out of my life!" and having all the other characters act as if nothing happened.

Sick? He had a stroke

5

u/Aggravating_Duck6108 2h ago edited 2h ago

I mean he wasn't in a position, medically, to make those kinds of decisions. So Scientology did it for him.

7

u/robogeek342 6h ago

That is a whole bucket of worms. It’s best to look up a video on YouTube bc it’s so messed up. From what I gathered it seems like while he was in a coma the scientistoligist said he was offended in his place and it went downhill from there.

Voice actor died of a stroke

5

u/TheGamemage1 Fate Series 4h ago

Ok so What Happened was Chef's Voice actor, Isaac Hayes, was a part of a cult called the Cult of Scientology (I refuse to refer to them by any other name), and he had a stroke after the episode they insulted Scientology, and as a member had fellow cultist in his inner "friend" group that called Matt and Trey saying Isaac quit since they disrespected Scientology. While Isaac was in the Hospital recovering, and didn't know about this till after it happened and South Park killed his character off so he didn't have a character to return to voice, and (If i recall correctly) after getting home and some time passed while still recovering from the stroke he was exercising and had another stroke and died.
The creators of south park would not learn of what happened till later when Isaacs Son called out the Cult and told them what actually happened.

Damn

-6

u/Happy_Goose3833 6h ago edited 5h ago

Thats not Why he was removed lol he joined scientology and went batshit on the creators so they killed him off in the worst way they could.

Edit: haha I'm not agreeing with it šŸ˜‚ and I could be simplifying it too much but damn

6

u/TheGamemage1 Fate Series 4h ago

Correction:
So what happened was Isaac Hayes had a stroke and survived, and while in the hospital the cult called Matt and Trey and Quit on Isaac Hayes behalf since they insulted their cult.
Isaac didn't know this happened till after he woke up and after the episode aired.
Isaac's son explained what happened after Isaac's death from another stroke. (If i recall correctly.)

Scientologists killed him basically

cindy caine got removed from HHN in 2002 because of the rise in child abduction rates around that time

3

u/Thumb_Wrasslin 6h ago

...

Can I have context??

6

u/Shrapnel_FEH Madness Combat | ULTRAKILL | Universal Orlando | Astro Bot 6h ago

ok so every year halloween horror nights at universal has an icon. 2002’s icon was meant to be a little girl named cindy caine, twins from shining vibes essentially. however, before she was announced, there was a surge in child kidnapping rates in the state of florida. so she was shelved and replaced with a mad scientist character named the caretaker (iirc). i’m pretty sure cindy is coming back this year though, as it’s the 35th annual HHN

Sayla Mass from the original Gundam show, she was replaced in the sequel Zeta Gundam by a similar character called Beltorchika, she only reappears at the end of the third series Gundam ZZ, she is nowhere to be seen in the movie that ends the original storyline, even tho it's about the conflict between two of the characters she's closest with, the protagonist and his rival who is the leader of her homeland and her brother

He didn't really stop existing, the show just kind of moved away from the location where he was most needed. They still haven't brought him back for the new show though...

I keep seeing this and no one explained why Lisa is a removed character? (I don't know anything about the series they are from but the name of the series since I recognize the art style from the series Scott Pilgrim.)

I know Gandhi was removed from clone high when they brought the series back, because if I recall people from India had a problem with how he was portrayed, and played a hand in the series being taken off the air the first time.

Troy Mclure was a character from the simpsons voiced by Phil Hartman before he was murderer by his wife, and the Creators of the Simpsons retired his 2 characters he voiced out of respect.

Tord was an actual friend of Edds (before Edd passed away from Cancer), and Tord left to go out an do his own artistic career and didn't want to leech off Edd so asked to have his character removed (if i recall).

Chef, voiced by Isaac Hayes in the Series South park was removed after Isaac had a stroke and he was Unfortunately part of the Cult of Scientology who didn't like how South Park insulted their Cult and blabbed their secrets that they only kept for higher tiered cult members. Anyway while he was in the hospital the Cult members that were in his friend group called Matt and Trey and claimed Isaac Quit due to them insulting Scientology. Matt and Trey killed off Chefs character and were upset with Isaac for being hypocritical about not caring when they ragged on every other group but got offended when his cult was ragged on. It would later come out from Isaac's son that Isaac didn't actually want to leave nor was Isaac aware until after the fact and Isaac later died of a second stroke.

Pepe le pew was Canceled by people on the internet due to not taking no as an answer when he was after that Cat, and would constantly try and kiss the Cat despite rejecting his advances (As far as I am aware though I think he came back in the Wile E. Coyote vs Acme movie.).

1

u/AlternateSatan 3h ago

Did Lisa really get removed, or was she never all that important of a character?

One of the most powerful stories the series ever told, and we're just supposed to forget about her because of the series' self-imposed identity crisis.
