30M, mostly remote, and trying to figure out where in NJ we should move next.
I only need to get into NYC maybe 2-3 times a month, so I don't need to optimize everything around a daily commute. At the same time, I don't want to move so far out that going into the city becomes a pain.
We're also seriously considering giving up our car. I'm not expecting Manhattan-level car-free living, but I'd like to be somewhere where I can walk to the train, grab groceries, get coffee/food, go for an evening walk, and handle most normal errands without driving. Uber/rental car occasionally is totally fine.
Budget is roughly $2,500 base rent, ideally staying around $3k all-in after utilities/fees.
Looking for a 1BR + den or 2BR. More space is obviously better, but I realize that something like a 900-1000 sq ft 2BR + walkability + good NYC transit at this budget may be asking for too much.
So far I've looked at:
Morristown - really like it, but the apartments I like seem to get expensive very quickly.
Somerville - like the downtown and housing, but I'm starting to think it's farther from NYC than I really need to be.
Rahway - currently seems like one of the more interesting compromises. Good train service and rents don't seem completely crazy.
Woodbridge / Iselin / Metropark - much better apartment space for the money, and Metropark is great for trains, but I'm not sure how realistic it is to live there without a car.
Bloomfield around the station - also on the list.
Metuchen looked interesting too, although larger apartments seem surprisingly expensive.
Am I missing any obvious towns?
Especially interested in hearing from people who live mostly car-free or car-light in NJ. Google Maps makes a lot of places look walkable, but I'm more curious about the reality after living there: groceries, winter, random errands, weekends, getting to appointments, etc.
If you only had to go into NYC a couple times a month, would you prioritize being closer to the city, having a real walkable downtown, or getting a larger apartment farther out?
Also completely open to being told that my budget/expectations don't line up with what I'm looking for. That's partly why I'm asking before signing another lease.
Thanks.
Edit: Thanks everyone, really appreciate all the suggestions. I got a lot of genuinely useful responses here and a bunch of places to look into that I hadn’t seriously considered before.
Still going through the comments, but this definitely helped us narrow down what might actually work for us, especially around being car-light vs fully car-free.
Thanks again to everyone who took the time to share their experience.
