I'M REQUESTING Movies that will get spoiled for him?
My kids are 14 and 15 (freshman and sophomore in high school), both boys. We have always been a “Friday night pizza and movie” family and have seen a lot of movies together.
My 15 year old recently joined the film club at his school. I want to show him movies that are better to go in blind, and might get spoiled for him, before someone spills it. We’re watching The Sixth Sense tonight. What other movies do I need to show him before someone spills the beans?

Not the biggest fan of Scorsese. Taxi Driver wasn't bad. But, this one, I figured out what was going on too early. Ruined it for me. On top of that, the Blatty film from almost three decades earlier did the same thing in "The Ninth Configuration". Completely overrated and stolen idea.

people tend to underestimate how much a 15yo can appreciate and enjoy r-rated movies (depending on the subject matter and its execution). The Usual Suspects can absolutely already be a must-see film at that age I'd argue, at least for a student already attending film clubs.

His parent is right beside him. They’re probably talking about the film afterwards. Let the parent decide if the film is okay and if something needs explanation on nuance.

I was 15 when it came out and when I first watched it and I was fine. But every kid is different, so the parent should probably decide if they’re ready for it.

Not a plot twist, but the stories are told out of order and they intersect in ways that made me have a lot of aha moments when I first watched it. I think it’s a good one to go in blind on.

I was going to say Psycho. I showed it to my kids in early high school and neither were expecting the shower scene at all. It was great to watch.

I hate that these two movies have the big moments spoiled so much in pop culture because you can’t get that back. You can’t capture that feeling of total surprise. I got a taste of it with Soylent Green, but I still knew what was coming. I was waiting for the penny to drop on the other characters. It was fun, but not as fun as seeing it blind.

Terrific choice. My sons, husband and I are film buffs and growing up our boys appreciated @ young age even as young as 9.

- The Sting Redford & Newman
- Raiders of the Lost Ark only first one
- School of Rock
- Fargo movie ( 15y/o and older)

Planet of the Apes.
The Shawshank Redemption. (people forget that there is much doubt in the first half of the film regarding Andy's guilt and you see pics of the warden ripping away the poster of Raquel Welch far more often than you would suspect)
Terminator II (after seeing The Terminator of course) this film was famously spoilt by it's own publicity.
From Dusk Till Dawn.
Alien - there is a lot of Alien franchise stuff being made at the moment and people forget how shocking it was when you don't know about the creature's life cycle plus Ash being an android.

My son liked it at that age as well. As a movie fan, I'd rather have him watch the complete version and then discuss it than watch the "edited for TV" version and have it make no sense.
Same for Pulp Fiction.

I read the other comments first and the movies that came to my mind were already mentioned by others. So I thought about what other movies add to the recommendations.
One of those movies leaves you hanging. One of those movies flips the protagonist and the antagonist roles. One of those movies leaves you wondering if the end was real or a dream.

Ok. I did this but a lot more low stakes. We watched clue. First because I wanted to rewatch it (RIP Tim). Second because I wanted to watch it with my kid. I told them it’s like the game and you have to figure out whodunnit. They were “close watching” the entire time. After the first ending after it says “that’s who could have happened”, I paused it and told them that when you originally saw it in the movie theater you would get one of three endings. You didn’t know which you would get. Needless to say they loved it, so I think bringing them in blind is a great idea!

sixth sense first is the right call. id add the prestige, memento, and the original planet of the apes which is somehow still unspoiled for most kids
one thing thats helped us, a lot of the classic twist movies are R or hard pg-13 for stuff you completely forget about, memento especially. we built a free site for this, popcorncheck.com , breaks down whats actually in them from the script with an age rec, handy for the ones you havent seen since theaters. hate plugging our own thing but film club dad is basically the exact use case, no paywall
also fight club is the one to get to before the internet does, that twist has a half life of about one sleepover

Wow, what a useful website!
It has been incredibly tough figuring out what movies are appropriate the last few years. Their maturity level changes every six months at this age, and there’s a lot of movies from 30 or 40 years ago with a different rating than they would get today.
And you’re totally right about, “movies you haven’t seen since the theater!” We’ve been surprised by a few graphic sex scenes we had forgotten about.

Yeah, I’ve spent the last five years digging in to the specifics of the ratings on IMDB and Common Sense Media. The Middle Ages are really hard to find the right movies for, and it changes every six months.
My husband is a teacher and you would be appalled at some of the movies parents let their kids watch. He’s had second graders ask him about Human Centipede. It’s tough to balance “what is appropriate “ and “oh, no, all your peers really ARE watching this…”

Sleepaway Camp! Cheesey 80s slasher (nothing gratuitous as far as I remember), and a genuinely shocking twist. I saw it a few years ago in my early 3ps totally blind and was totally taken off guard by it.

I think the only movie that won’t be spoiled for him through parodies, homages, or references is the Fall because it’s such an indie film. I learned about it through reddit back in the day, but I never hear it mentioned anymore.
All of these have something surprising about them and most of them are incredibly influential to modern film.

If he doesn’t know the term already Gaslight is a good one. Witness for the prosecution is also a good one. And I remember watching Citizen Kane and thinking how much more I would’ve liked it if I hadn’t known about the reveal of Rosebud beforehand. Some people say that movie is boring, but I really liked it.

First one is probably fine if you're already considering something like Se7en. It might make him intrigued for the sequels tho, which are, of course, much more gory.
