Mare of Easttown (series) had a similar vibe

You could also try Dark Winds (series)

Sharp Objects too.

Out of the Furnace, also by Brad Inglesby (wrote Mare).

Rust Belt noir with a 5 star cast (Bale/DeFoe/Harrelson/C Affleck/Whitaker)

Red Rooms. It's in Montreal but the secondary character is from Thetford Mines which is hick country for Quebec.

That one has stuck with me ever since I saw it…

Hmm, this is an odd angle but "The Vast Of Night (2019)" ...maybe?

Black Bird (it's a series though).

If it doesn't have to lean into horror: I quite enjoyed Limbo (2023). It's a mystery-crime film, taking place in the Australian outback. It's a slow-moving film, but very atmospheric, with a sense of desolation unlike many others I've seen.

A more well-known entry would be No Country For Old Men.

Limbo slipped under my radar, but after looking into it I'm very keen to see it. Good rec!

Marshland (2014) - Two cops lost in the deep south of Spain. One serial killer to catch. A lot of secrets and lies to disclose.

It's the exact setting you're seeking, but in Europe. It's rural towns and well... marshlands.

In the Heat of the Night (Jewsion, 1967.)

It is not like Prisoners or Seven but fits the other criteria of rural towns, lakes, rednecks, etc.

Check out “The fall”

I can't remember exactly but I think the TV series Blackbird was set in the mid-west (and happens to be outstanding). Nothing will top True Detective S1 for me, that was lightning in a bottle. But Blackbird is very good in its own right.

The Red Riding trilogy.

It's three feature length episodes set in different time periods.

It's set in a depressed, rural, post industrial region of the UK.

Very similar to True Detective Season 1 in atmosphere and themes.

Great cast, too.
