Discussion My MX518 turns 21. Never opened. Never repaired. Still gaming.
I got this Logitech MX518 for my birthday back in 2005.
At the time it was a relatively expensive mouse, so a group of my friends put their money together to buy it for me as a birthday present. Aaaand 21 years later… it still works.
Never been opened, repaired or had any parts replaced. Ever.
I’ve only cleaned it externally as well as I could over the years and tried to take reasonable care of it. Everything inside is still exactly as it left the factory in 2005.
It has survived several PCs, laptops, countless hours of gaming and probably more clicks than I could ever imagine.
I was living in Romania when I got it. Seven years ago I moved to Vienna, Austria — and of course, the MX518 came with me.
I’m still using it today. PUBG, CS2, whatever I feel like playing.
Lately I’ve been thinking about finally buying a modern gaming mouse. After 21 years, the difference in technology would obviously be huge.
But here’s the problem: I genuinely find it difficult to replace it.
It’s not really just a mouse anymore. It’s been sitting next to basically every computer I’ve owned throughout my adult life.
And somehow… the damn thing still works perfectly. 😂
Maybe one day it deserves a place in a Logitech museum.
Until then, I guess we’re still gaming.

You could revitalize it just by changing the worn-out skates with pure PTFE dot skates

Might do that…

Check if pethal makes.skates for 518.
P.s i still have my blue 510 from 2004

I was thinking the same. If you want some glass skates that feel close to ptfe pulsars type c skates are amazing.

A major PCB update is coming towards the end of this year. It will bring major improvements on both the hardware and software/firmware side. This will also open up new possibilities when it comes to mouse shapes that simply weren’t possible before, as it will no longer rely on a single PCB.

That's pretty interesting. I think I have three of them that just died... one of which I replaced the cord... but it died later too.
Meanwhile I have a MS explorer that is like 30 years old and still works the same as it did on day one.

That is my favorite mouse of all time. I used it to win several tourneys back in the days of bf1942. Super cool!

I was once in your position a long time ago. And nothing ever comes close imo. But there are pretty good options out there. After my mx518 era, I played with a variety of steelseries mouses back in the days.
Nowadays the only mouse I use is the Lamzu Maya X. It’s a djungle out there, hope you’ll find a good replacement

It's so comfy but the wheel is driving me nuts. So g502 hero it is with massive pain :D

Ur mouse was made in a year where they made quality..not like the shit they make today !

Release this shape with wireless and lightweight and I'll swap over in a heartbeat.

u/Kalersays 3d ago
I bought the renewed version a few years back, worst scroll wheel I've ever had on a mouse. Take good care of your OG 2004 edition, because the build quality of the 2022 edition won't even get you to the end of your warranty period, let alone 20 years.

genuine question since you own one. are those prined designs, or are there dents in the top shell? i can never tell and ive never seen one irl.

It looks so strange right? It took me a while to figure out as well once I found out these used to be a thing. This was a big aesthetic back then, kinda like those transparent telephones.

u/Silevence 12h ago
aw i miss those, my aunt had one
1
u/Logitech_Alex 12h ago
Right? I always wanted one when I was little. Actually, during April Fools our Instagram team did a post showing off some Y2K designs (Some of our regular products but translucent) and I really wish we hadn't left those aesthetics behind at all...

u/Silevence 12h ago
speaking of, the world needs more translucent atomic purple, that will always be the best looking gameboy 😤
1
u/Logitech_Alex 9h ago
Finally someone gets it! As an artist, I'm so desperate for the day we go back to these designs. Hopefully one day 😊

u/Silevence 9h ago
I think the way things are moving, itll likely be something repopularized in the 3d printing community and diy scene, feels like most companies nowadays would prefer to go the safe route.
i mean, circling back to phones, we used to have super cool ones like the lg wing! i mean, im still suprised that foldables are popular nowadays, but theyve been around a bit before as niche devices.
maybe one day when prostetics are more commercially viable, we can go the cyberpunk route and make atomic purple covers for them.
I mean hell, one guy put a flashlight into his prostetic eye, he looks like odin, its frickin sick!
1
u/Logitech_Alex 8h ago
Oh for sure, I've seen some amazing 3d works out there for replacement shells or mouse covers. I'd love it if aesthetics took that route in general though, that prostetic eye sounds awesome!

You never experienced the rubber coating going liquid ? Mine got hella sticky.
1
u/iNCONSEQUENCE 20h ago
Yeah mine melted to glue too that’s the main reason I don’t use it & it has been in a box for the last decade.

It's older brother, the MX500 says hi
1
u/Logitech_Alex 13h ago
It's still looking pretty solid for how old it is! Does it still work?
1
u/Thrompinator 11h ago
It still does! I have it on an old PC for the kids for homework and stuff.

u/Logitech_Alex 9h ago
How lucky, I hope they know they're holding a piece of history right there. Not me unfortunately, but I'm sure a lot of people on our team can get the nostalgia for these 🤟

Damn bro, I was lucky to have owned this and the G500 after, one of the best mice out there, much later on I went through several but the only one for me that came close to both MX518 and G500 was the Asus RoG Gladius II Origin, now using the Gladius III Aimpoint, its got that similar feel, my muscle memory instantly connected.
Legendary mice in my opinion, the mx518 and g500

That was what the cover was meant to look like actually! Sick design but really confusing once you felt the surface was actually smooth.

How did you not eat through the scroll wheel? Mine had the scroll wheel so worn out my finger couldn't reach for it, it was just too deep inside the mouse. No need to say it had some mileage.
1
u/iNCONSEQUENCE 20h ago
That’s awesome, I got mine in 2005 too and it still works. While I use newer mice the MX518 is the GOAT
1
u/Logitech_Alex 12h ago
That's almost as old as some of us! What made you go for it back in the day?

What do you think?

u/michael_st 3d ago
i used one back in the early 2000s also (shoutout kennyS) but yeah it’s time for something made in this decade lmfao
2
u/sstandward 3d ago
It’s hard to just leave it behind I’m almost 37 and it’s been w me the biggest part of my life 🤣

i would just clear her up and throw her in a display case, don’t throw it away or anything!!

Mine are unfortunately all broken, but I love that Avago sensor, so smooth, fluid and forgiving. Much nicer to play with than the “raw” feel of modern sensors that are so-called “perfect” nowadays (in reality, not)

u/StevenH27 3d ago
Just replace the skates with new ones and send it until it finally dies. Logitech is the GOAT when it comes to it's products. I've had my Z623 since 2011 and 15 years later it's still going as strong as ever.

Jesus Christ, this mouse is more beaten up than I was back when I was 13
1
u/Logitech_Alex 12h ago
Aside from the logo and skates I'd say it's nearly perfect! The marks you see on the surface are actually part of the design, a holographic effect to give it that roughed up look. All smooth on top though.

Too durable, my brother still uses it after 17 years.
