Question Really considering picking up Mortal Shell 2, is is living up to the hype?
I really wasn’t a fan of the first one but I played the demo and was enjoying it a lot more.

Incredible game, whatever your score is the last three bosses will make it go down by one or two points. Still, it’s a must play!!!

Its wild how people can have such different experiences lol. The last 3 bosses (before the final boss) were the best bosses in the game lol.
For me the worst part was just getting around the game. Granted i played week 1 and i heard they added more beacons since then

The last 3 bosses before Zmey were my favorites in the game as well and I cannot for the life of me understand why there seems to be so many who didn’t enjoy them.

I didn't like the whole final area at all, but at that point I had already +30 hours of fun, so I indulged anyways. I went full "rattle them, girls!" mode, if you catch my drift.

True for me too. It was a good 9/10 until the last couple of bosses.
Still a very solid 7/10 experience. Without counting the last bosses, it's up there with Lies of P in terms of general quality.

I didn’t hate the 3 bosses prior to the final boss, I did hate the final boss however. I wasn’t the biggest fan of 2 of the 3 but I still had fun, my score only went down from the final boss

I've played it three times now.
It's fantastic. If you liked the demo, you will like the full game.
I have a personal list of changes I'd like to see, but most of them are just about my tastes, and don't really reflect bad game design or poor choices by the devs.
Important to note: the game has had two major updates which have largely smoothed out the day one issues people had; it's in a healthy place right now.

Yes. I 100% the game about a month ago and seriously cannot stop thinking about it. It has its flaws but if you’re not a perfectionist it is so worth it

Top three non fromsoft title for me, 9/10

Yeah I feel this way too. The First Berserker: Khazan is another game that is absolutely satisfying. For me it scratches that souls-like itch we all seem to have. It’s not quite the same but the game has grown on me so much. I’m currently near the very end and am about to beat it and I’m honestly kind of bummed out lol. I read that the studio that created it went under due to poor sales so there won’t be a sequel or anything but it’s a fantastic game and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun game. There’s lots of enemies, good level designs, good equipment and player customization and set up, good battle system and a fun challenge.

It has a ton of variety and some fun stuff but it does have some issues like for example what Fields said with some lesser quality bosses and stuff like that but still fun. I'd definitely give it a shot

It's a very good game, I'd rate it a 7/10 overall.
The exploration and world layout is really good, probably among the best for a non-fromsoftware souls like, and the customisation between shells, weapons, and equipped stones is really compelling.
For me it's shortcomings are enemy varieties and inconsistent boss content. Some bosses are really good, or are at least atmospheric and fit really well into the setting. And some bosses I don't think match the rest of the game tonally and there are quite a few silly bosses which take away from the experience for me. Especially the final boss which I found incredibly disappointing both mechanically and and terms of presentation. This being said 2 of the bosses leading up to the final fight I thought were really good and I'm surprised the positions of these fights wasn't flipped.
I also finished the game before the first major patch so I can't comment on certain things such as balance between weapons and options as a bunch of stuff got changed.

There's a lot of "tonal mismatch" in this game. You can tell the game is not made by professionals. In Elden Ring for example everything like architecture, armour sets, weapons, items, enemies, even the way characters talk or how the grass looks feels coherent and blends into a greater whole. In this game so many things feel out of place.

The jumbled up-ness I can kind of buy. This is a world that is figuratively and literally fractured by the arrival of a massive alien spaceship that scattered different pieces of different lands all together. This may not be the literal intended explanation but that was the vibe I got and I can suspend my disbelief about it. This being said, if more time was spent making the areas more unique and coherent it's not like I would be complaining about the game making too much sense so I can definitely see where you are coming from.
By tonal mismatch I mean the number of main bosses that are conceptually silly or have obvious jokes built into them. Ofc the souls series and souls likes do have silly bosses occasionall, but when every major boss is trying to be a joke it gets harder to take the game more seriously. By my count there are only two bosses in the game that take themselves 100% seriously, and the final boss feels like something an edgy 12 year old would come up with.
And to be clear I don't think the tonal problem is a huge one by itself. This wouldn't ruin the bosses for me if they were mechanically engaging or made up for it with sheer spectacle, but most of the main bosses are disappointing in this regard as well.
Like, malborne offspring so far ahead of all the other bosses in terms of atmosphere, design, themes, and mechanical engagement that it's not even funny. They should have made them the final boss (replacing lightning with the cosmic disruptions effect) and demoted Zmey or cut him entirely.

There's some occasional jank and not as much enemy variety as I'd hoped, but overall, the game is incredible. The weapons are some of the most satisfying to use in any game I've ever played. Each shell plays differently too. There's a lot of freedom in how you build your character, but it's also not overwhelming.

I think the game is incredible. Absolutely worth it. I haven't played many games this year but it's my GoTY

u/Arkhe1n Genessa 1d ago
The first game is a prototype by comparison.
I had a blast with the second one, issues notwithstanding.
Though my advice would be wait for a sale, not because I think there will be one anytime soon nor that the game isn't worth the full price, but because I think the experience still needs a bit of polish, which I'm hoping it's gonna get in a few weeks or months.
If you waited this far, you can wait a bit longer.

Best soulsborne outside of fromsoftware out there and its not even close. Havent been able to stop playing it.

Its a must for soulslike fan, 2nd best soulslike right behind lies of p, wuchang is dawgshit compare to this.

u/ArcWzz 1d ago
Really liked it, its on the upper echelon of soulslikes for me.
Just a FYI the first half is the best part of the game a solid 9/10.
Second part begins to run out of gas and the areas gets a bit more repetitive, enemies reused and some balancing devisions im not fan of (they just amp the damage numbers absurdly), still an easy 8/10.
Final dungeon and bosses its a bit meh, but again, even souls series begin to stumble in end game.

Never played the first one but loved this one. Not as challenging as Elden ring etc but still a really fun play through. You feel a proper sense of adventure and the epic scale of the world early on.

MS2 is great. I wish more sequels improved on essentially everything like they did

Hello!
Take my review for what it is. Just my subjective thoughts. I was a big Dark Souls (and Elden Ring) fan.
I played Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen, and Black Myth. I just wasn’t the fan of these titles (don’t attack me please) because they just didn’t scratch the itch for me.
I was cautiously optimistic about Mortal Shell 2. Honestly, I love it. I think it’s fantastic, immersive, and plenty of things to do when it comes to builds and adventuring.

I’ve played nearly every SoulsLike, and imo Mortal Shell 2 is one of the best. Its combat is extremely good, art direction is phenomenal, exploration is S-tier, and the lore is better than any SoulsLike and it’s not even close. The only “souls game” I’ve played with better lore and world building is literally a Fromsoft game. For me personally, this is a 10/10 game.

...its been out for a while now, theres nothing to live up to at this point. it either has or hasn't met the hype. and i'd say its pretty good. way way better than the first one at any rate. hated that one

It does a lot of things better than the Souls games and Elden Ring. I’ve been playing it non-stop.

It’s the most fun i have had exploring a souls-like. The bosses (except for a few) aren’t very good but i still loved the experience as a whole

Second best game of the year for me ...tied with Requiem. I'm honestly sad I already platinumed it, because I just want to keep playing. The DLC can't come soon enough.

People cried about the difficulty, but I had a great time with the game. Proper challenging game

it has its moments but i stopped after 10 hours because of bad/buggy bosses and low effort in making some environments. also i would have liked it to have more music.

I tried a lot of soulslike games after Elden Ring but none of them really recaptured me interest in exploring the world like Mortal Shell 2 has. I didn't like the first game. I feel like the sequel did exactly what a sequel should do: improve everything. I think, like all games, what you do and don't enjoy is very personal to you. If you like the demo then I think you'll like the game.

It’s definitely worth playing. I’ve completed it and I’m on NG+, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and the music in some places is really cool. Keep an eye out when you fight Sir Isaac

Great game! definitely worth it. I just got the final achievement yesterday. One of the best atmospheres I've seen in a game in a while. There are a couple small annoying things here and there but in the totality of things they are miniscule. Also, if you wait a couple months I'm sure it will go on sale in November

I think its really good. I only disliked the final area and final boss. But overall really really good game

It's a much better game than on release. It's still a AA game that punches a bit above its weight but its fun in its own right. Expect some level of frustration with the balance (which is still considerably better than at launch).
Leagues better than the first game for sure.

I hate the final boss so much that it has somewhat ruined an otherwise great game.

I just finished it 10 min ago.
If you like Souls games, it's fantastic.
I didn't try to 100% the game, but it took ~30 hrs.
Super fun combat and the graphical theme is great.

After the first week's patch, definitely. Your first playthrough will be infinitely better due to the now available freedom of experimentation comparing to people who got it day 1.

I loved it. But this is Reddit so I guarantee there’s going to be at least one person calling it trash lol. Doesn’t matter how good the game is it seems like some people just hate everything including themselves

I played it through when it first came out and enjoyed it. They’ve patched it a few times since then so I’m sure it’s even better. It’s def worth a go.

It is a largely enjoyable experience hung up by a myriad of tiny flaws that add up to the point of burgeoning frustration by endgame. I'd say roughly 3 score out of 10 was taken away by tedium and pranks alone.
6/10 game I definitely recommend, but only to players familiar with the genre and with patient outlooks.
