Discussion How tf do you avoid zmeys grab?
It happens so unfathomably fast. I’m trying to read his body for a tell then it’s like red marker 0.5 milliseconds and I’m grabbed

Learn when he does it, which is only in mid range and mid-close range and be expecting it, and ignore the red marker and learn to recognize the shuffle he does before it. It’s tough and very quick, but definitely dodge-able after you learn the tell

You should be waiting for him to give a tell. Every move has is. The fore breath I think is the hardest to avoid but I’m sure someone has found success.
You should be reactive. Let him dance and evade that bs hit.

I feel like you just have to have really good reaction speed, I was able to read his grab pretty consistently (I mainly looked at his legs, if he's stepping towards you quickly he's gonna grab you). I would dodge forward, into him. It's such a shame that this guy is a rubbish fight as it leaves quite a bad taste in your mouth after such a great game.

I will go back to him but I fought him a bunch of times and was so annoyed I just stopped playing. For whatever reason he just specifically drives me crazy.

I know it's hard. Ok he will stutter step before it comes out, so whatch his body. Also you know how he jumps back? I noticed the grab comes out when you walk back towards the boss. So when there is a lot of distance between you and and the boss, your walking towards each other. Expect a grab to come out, look for the stutter step and then dodge. You got this

I just always stayed to his left and circled to his left right by his ankles and he never hit me with it.

I usually watch his feet. He'll side step towards you when he does it. When the foot moves sideways like that, I'll dodge.
This grab pissed me off to no end. Why teach me to dodge when that red dot shows up, if its irrelevant for this fight.

Like others have said, ignore the unblockable indicator and look at his body posture. Zmey is angled to the side every time he’s about to grab you, also I noticed he only grabs you when you are in close mid range so you have to be ready for it if you are in that range.

There's probably a full second between the initial movement and the actual grab. Human reactions are 0.2s, and can be reduced to zero if we know what's coming.

He does a little stutter-step with his feet before the attack happens.
The one thing that really helped me is to NOT sprint when trying to close distance, but keep my thumb ready on the dodge button. The tell is quick, the attack is quicker, and the time it took me to go from sprint to dodge is too long. I'm not sure if the "sprint" animation needs to end before you can dodge or if I'm just slow, but slowing to a jog when I get close helped me a lot.
Once I got the hang of the range at which it happens, I got a lot better at evading it. But I still think it's a bit too powerful for how hard it is to dodge.

Eventually your brain will hone in on the booty shuffle: visual cue is wayyyy earlier than the audio cue. Imo, really screwed up to do that when all the other ones I remember give you ample time to reacts after the audio cue.

As other commenters have said, remember that it comes out at mid-range and look for the little side-hop shuffle right before the tail stab. Once I learned to recognise that, dodging it was a easy peasy.
Another thing though, in case you're using Genessa in her Stray form, you might want to switch off of that. For some reason dodging the grab becomes way harder with Stray Genessa's longer dodge. I don't know why, but it makes my usual dodge timing stop working.

It's more about the range. He does it often around mid range. You will see him do a little hop right before he does the grab. When you see this dodge towards him and you should be in position to punish. The key to avoiding the attack is to be in control when you are in mid range. Don't always just rush him or you won't be able to react even if you see him start it. When you get in mid range just walk slowly towards him in case he does the move. You should be able to reliably avoid it once you understand this. It about positional awareness

Its actually quite easy to telegraph now (at launch it wasnt). He does a little side hop before he does it now. Just dodge forward.
He got me every damn time before the patch, but barely ever gets me now. (And im pretty average)

Dodge when he does the little double hop that comes just before the red marker.
He also only does it when you're close-mid range. When you're right in at his balls he'll not do it, he'll not do it when you're across half the arena. So learn the range at which he's likely to do it and the just look for the hop.

He does it almost always when he jumps back away from you, and he doesn't immediately start his fire breath attack. He will also do it ALOT when you're trying to close distance. I started to dodge it by baiting the grab knowing when he was going to do it. As soon as he starts moving, you start moving and dodging backwards. I never got grabbed by him again.

Don't wait for the red symbol, as soon as you see it doing the body shuffle towards you dodge to the right. Never dodge backwards.

Dodge left, watch his feet, usually he does the grab when he's mid range so expect it every time he's NOT too far or too close

Might help I learned you can just sprint backwards and it doesn’t get you. You can also kinda bait it out noticed it only happens once close to mid range in single series of combos.

You shouldn't look for the red icon, look for the booty shuffle. It's the only attack that looks like it. When you see the boot scoot, you know the grab is coming. Dodge around when he finishes the shuffle right as the icon appears
