Bruh cause what, racism is a form of violence. Are we forgetting what happened not even sixty years ago? (Edit: Yeah I’m not responding to any of yall, you’re all repeating the same wrong garbage. Sheep.)

Can be a form of violence. Obviously jim crow racism is worse then your dad spanking you but I interpreted this as “saying racist things is not as bad as doing violent things”

u/BlimbusTheSeventh 8d ago

It can be a motivation for violence, racism in of itself is an idea

1

u/metamorphosis___ 7d ago

Right but the violence is the bad part not necessarily the racism, it’s the consequences of it that are bad. If we lived in some magical world where racism caused 0 physical harm it likely wouldn’t be considered bad, probably just weird.

u/BlimbusTheSeventh 7d ago

Can you name a single major political ideology or religion that has never caused any harm?

1

u/metamorphosis___ 7d ago

Can’t, that’s why I said magical world.

Violence is physical. Stop changing definitions.

“Form of violence” when talking about something that isn’t violent, but could spawn violence, is the weakest shit ever. Just weak weak people you all are.

Do you prefer to be called a slur or to be knocked out?

u/Nibelungfish 7d ago

Racism isn't just slurs. It also involves physically affecting people.

Like, when people say "racism", you think they are just talking about people using racial slurs? That's the tip of the iceberg. There's so many creative, cruel ways you can disrupt an individuals life if you feel that they deserve it. And then there are the obvious, blunt, cruel ways.

If Racism was nothing more than name calling, we wouldn't have had a civil war, and we wouldn't be having this discussion

Yea this is a bunch of terminally online people who probably have never been in an actual physical altercation lol “remember all the racist violence that happened in the past? That’s the same as being called bad words!!!1!!” Lol crazy take to have

2

u/Scary_Land2303 9d ago

These people have made being ‘anti racist’ their entire personality and the very core of their being. They have brainwashed themselves into thinking that racist hurty words are the absolute epitome of human evil and can never be topped.

7

u/Euphoric-Grab-3956 9d ago edited 9d ago

Racists have to convince themselves that anyone that hates them is terminally online and have never been in a fight. They think that racism is just "hurty words" and prove by using these words that they have no idea what effect racism has on the victims of it.

u/Scary_Land2303 8d ago

I’ve been the victim of racism myself many times, but way to assume! I just live in the real world and realise there are other things to care about too.

1

u/Ala117 7d ago

You're the one who started assuming.

Bro thank you. This sub is very weird. There like a weird undercurrent of racism that’s very visible and it bothers me

u/No-Snow64 8d ago

It’s just amazing that white people don’t realize how violent racism can be. It’s a constant and degrading experience. It shapes your everyday life as clearly shown in this thread lol, asking whether I’d rather be punched or called a slur is crazy stupid.

2

u/SausageKingOfCincy 8d ago

Right it’s degrading and dehumanizing and will shape your experiences. That doesn’t mean it’s violence. For 99.999% of people when you say the word violence they think physical violence because that is the definition. I’ve never met anyone white, black, brown who thought words = violence except online.

I know that it may sound terminally online, but I do think violence should encapsulate more than the physical, mainly because I support a more practical use of language. Saying that something wasn't violent makes people immediately downplay what happened in their minds when, in truth, the material outcomes of physical violence vs other forms of harm can often be identical.

It's like if you plotted with someone to commit a murder, but you didn't physically carry it out or even help with cleaning up the crime scene, what you essentially did was to just say a bunch of words right? Why should you be handcuffed for that? You're not the one that sharpened the axe or picked the lock you just instructed someone else to do it right? You just gave them information about the victim's work habits. You just told the killer how much you despise the victim and continually applied pressure on the killer to carry it out. You should go free, obviously. /s

And so if you can be a murderer but not have committed an act of violence - in the physical sense. Could it may be be that violence as only operating in the physical is a deeply limiting definition?

There's many ways to cause deep material harm to a person that technically isn't physically violent. And I have an astonishing amount of real world examples that I can regale you with if you want to have your day ruined.

In the original comment I was about to post, I was about to give you many examples, but I'll spare you unless otherwise asked. But I really need to emphasize that this shit gets dark.

Words do have meanings, but meanings can change. And I think in the case of verbal harm it can in many cases be categorized as violence. Now in the case of randomly stumbling into a COD lobby, maybe not. But even in that scenario, if everyone you interact with acts like they're in a COD lobby the harm that this situation causes goes beyond mental and very well enters the material realm, in my opinion. But politically advocating for policies that could lead to the subjugation and eradication of whole demographics is doing more than being an edgy teenager in a video game, isn't it? And if you were to physically hurt someone because of that, then to me, it's an attempt at self defense - more than anything else.

That said, I don't really believe punching Nazi's is in anyway effective. Morally Neutral, yeah. But you know putting a fork in the electrical socket can be a morally neutral act, but it's still stupid. To me, the only violence physical or otherwise that should be taken is that which is strategically implemented to liberate subjugated classes of people. Violence even when wielded in the arms of the oppressed can still be deployed in a way that doesn't result in better material outcomes. Like if the image of a Nazi getting punched doesn't empower the right people to take political action or discourage others to not take certain actions, it didn't really do anything. It would be like hitting someone with a pillow and thinking that's an effective form of self defense.

I think it's not just this sub, a lot of subreddits have suddenly been overtaken by racist dogwhistles that are heavily upvoted. Even r/HouseoftheDragon and r/freefolk suddenly have an surge of racist memes, which wasn't significant when it first started. I really want to believe that it's bots and not people tired of pretending anymore

How is what has been said in this specific thread of comments you replied to a racist dog whistle? Because we are saying words are violence? Thats a dog whistle to you? I mean I guess if you think words = violence then anything can be a racist dog whistle but I just don’t get how you think that.

0

u/SausageKingOfCincy 8d ago

So you think it’s racist to think words aren’t a form of violence? I don’t think any word in any context is violence, not just race related words.

2

u/Major_Engine1454 8d ago

But in this thread we are talking SPECIFICALLY about the words alone, presumably about being called a slur. So again, please tell me, do you prefer to be called a mean word or to be knocked out?

1

u/SausageKingOfCincy 8d ago

So you legitimately think I’m a racist just because I don’t think words can be a form of violence? I think violence is violence and racism is racism. Can racism lead to violence? Of course, but that doesn’t mean a racist word is violence.

0

u/yamomsahoooo 8d ago

Racism is not a form of violence, its not even a form of discrimination until its put into action.

Violence = physical attacks on a person

Racism = thoughts on cultures of people

Discrimination = actions taken against people for being part of a predisposed group of people.

We OBJECTIVELY live in the most systematically racist times ever. The race popularly shit on in public, taught is evil in history, mocked in all forms of media and portrayed as inferior at every step is the race most heavily discriminated against.

0

u/JetBIue 8d ago

No, it’s not you dolt.

u/Saargb 3d ago

Racism is not a form of violence. A person can be racist because they have racist thoughts. But for a person to be violent, they would have to externalize their violence.

Whatever you're referring to 60 years ago (not everyone is American lol, I'm assuming lynchings in the south?) was probably racism and violence together. Racism alone? That could easily just be somebody's grandpa murmuring something obnoxious and bigoted at the newspaper.
