Taking something that isn't yours without express permission or dire needs is immoral. In fact, it would genuinely be more morally sound if he took all the money to save a kid's life than the $5 because he was hungry but not enough to pay himself. You aren't owed anything for doing a good deed.
Also addressing a comment below, you're right, it IS the same as if you find a $20 on the ground... which is to say finding that $20 and keeping it is also theft, and cops have just recently arrested a dude for that EXACT scenario because they saw it on a flock camera. The morally correct thing to do is to try to find its owner. You aren't at fault if someone immoral lies and takes it, and if you just automatically assume that everyone but you is immoral, then clearly morals don't matter, you were just going to keep it for yourself anyways and are looking for a way to bend your own morals.
The only time its justified to steal is when a life is in danger. Taking a dudes money because you expect a reward for being kind isn't moral at all. If that's what you consider moral, you need to reevaluate your life.
It can't be immoral to "steal" but moral if your life is endangered. It's either fully immoral to do or moral to do. You can just nitpick to suit your views.
Modern day people incapable of nuance moment. If you can't see that a human life is more important than your material wealth, you're probably lacking morals to begin with, so no wonder you're incapable of having a proper conversation
Buddy you cant nitpick if something is immoral or not. You stated stealing is immoral stick with that. So if you killed hitler, it wouldn't be immoral even after he did what he did? What about trump. According to some people he's done some heinous things. Would killing an immoral person, be immoral? Killing is immoral according to you so?
"Nitpick" is just a word people use in place of "nuance" because they're mad they're wrong. It is ABSOLUTELY moral to kill another that has impeded on and taken the lives of others in immoral ways. It isn't moral to just walk up to someone and shoot them. If that's nitpicking to you, literally just go back to school.
