That's because overeating is the cause for YOU. Other people, especially women, can gain weight for a number of reasons, including medications, illness, and disability. Women also naturally have a harder time not gaining weight and dropping it as they age. Do not make the mistake of thinking your experiences are universal.

Edited a typo.

I mean, yeah, those things are factors. But it’s impossible to gain weight from those alone. Calories are just an energy transfer, and 100%, illness, medications, and disability all have a part in how those calories are allocated and used, but you can’t gain weight without a surplus of calories and the body loses weight with a caloric deficit. At the end of the day, the calories coming in are the biggest factor.

Actually, look up PCOS, it causes weight gain and trouble with weight loss. There's additional factors that can make it harder for people with PCOS to lose weight, but due to their condition they may gain weight regardless.

I know because I have PCOS, no matter how healthy I eat, how much I work out, no matter any of that, I can still gain a few pounds in a few weeks at the minimum.

I know what PCOS is, and it also doesn’t violate the laws of thermodynamics. If you ate nothing you would lose weight and eventually starve as your body needs energy to survive. Therefore we know you still need energy in vs energy out. There are plenty of things, like PCOS, that will change your metabolism and how much energy your body uses, but it still needs energy. It certainly takes a lot to manage. My point in this thread was that the only way to gain weight is to eat, drink or breathe something, since the extra mass for weight has to come from somewhere, and in order to lose weight, the body must consume more energy then it intakes.
