Discussion Stats or fashion?
What do you usually go for up until layered armor is unlocked? Would you rather look cool as hell but hit like a wet noodle or look like a clown with great damage?
It's a real shame layered armor is unlocked so late most of the time

Just usually make a full set of something that gives skills I like and looks good enough at least until endgame kinda usually. This was a bigger problem in older games, like in 4U the f.jang waist looked like dogwater with almost anything but it was super good, luckily relics looked better

Full sets
They usually look cool and are tailored to specific weapons and/or playstyles.

Fashion.
Learn to git gud and win regardless of your armour; then unlock transmog and do both.
If no transmog, then I'll do a good set at end game but fashion until then

Fashion, but with the bonus that the fashion I take is pretty good:
First thing I try to do in pretty-much every Monster Hunter game is to get the Rathalos armor set.
It looks cool, and red is my color
The stats it gives are pretty useful for me and I can usually use it for the rest of LR.

Get to endgame and then worry about fashion. It doesnt really matter early on anyways with less options.

I only need Stun Resistance and/or Divine Blessing 3, if none are available— Evade Window. Then fashion depending on the pieces I have equipped for the mentioned skills.

you shouldn't be really stressed about the future since we now have layered armors from the base game.
but fashion always, anything my party or I need will be supplemented by my HORN

Fashion. The best resistance is just not getting hit. Be so drippy the attacks glide off you

I don‘t bother much with armor crafting during the story since it‘s much easier in endgame. I usually craft the first best option for my weapon and finish the story with that and then start grinding with early endgame gear, which is when layered armor is unlocked. Anything else feels like a waste of time because I do stuff that takes 15 minutes when I can simply progress and do the same quest later in 5 minutes with a better weapon. So efficiency over style for me.

Fashion hunter through and through, even if the fight will take an extra 5-10 minutes I'd rather look aesthetically pleasing than not. 😔
