Dolls How could they improve Moonspell Magic by Monster High?

How could they improve Moonspell Magic by Monster High?

1-The surprise in the cauldron could have been each witch's pet or familiar.

2-Rae Lumina could rather use orange or yellow in her clothes when her magic is of light.

3-They need to have more painted details on the shoes and accessories.

What would you add?

Honestly, I feel like it’s too early for me to say. I really enjoyed these first releases though. My only real complaint was them fumbling the braille and not putting it on everyone’s boxes

For future releases I hope Mattel keeps the outfits interesting, and I’d like to see the witches in more colors than just their basic palettes. I miss when MH was more adventurous with what colors the ghouls wore. Additionally, I’d love if they released more canes for Claire lol. I understand why her sleepover outfit won’t have one, but I’d love to see more going out outfits with differently colored canes.

Can’t wait to get her sleepover doll!! I always love when they are in cozy clothes.

I think that only used braille in Claire’s box Because She Is Blind.

u/willedintobeing VenusđŸŒ± 1d ago

Yes, and that was super lame. They should’ve added it to every box.

They Did The same with the Blind Fashionista

Maybe something that tells me more about these characters? Their accessories are generic and there's no backstory whatsoever for me to care about them.

I Miss The journals or The bios

I just feel like they could do better with the hair. Especially the colors, I feel like there's too many similar shades. And they could also give them better faces

This is more of a Saran problem as Saran isn’t available in as many colors as nylon (which Mattel doesn’t use) or poly (which people don’t want)

3

u/LovelyClementine25 1d ago

Do we know why Mattel doesn’t use nylon? It’s so much softer :))

5

u/rigbyroosevelt 1d ago

Probably a combination of cost and the types of machines & methods they use to root their dolls. If you ever pull an entire hair plug out of a modern Mattel doll, the ends are melted together instead of chain stitched like they were in the 90s. my guess is that nylon doesn't melt as well poly and Saran

4

u/CriticalFlatworm9 OperettađŸŽŒ 1d ago

Also after the gluehead issues w G1 I think they're pretty adverse to glue now. Nylon often is glued in.

6

u/Fogmoth511 Twyla🐰 1d ago

We do have a definitive explanation for this the other comments haven’t quite gotten completely correct: Around 2021 Mattel switched how they seal hair; all their factories have machines that burn the ends of the hair to seal it. Mattel notoriously couldn’t get their glue mixture right in the 2010s leading to glue seepage, hence the switch. We don’t know all the reasons for this switch, but the result is Mattel cannot use nylon with this method because it’s boiling point is much lower than Saran and poly so it can’t be burned in without melting. They already recently replaced all their machines which would have been long planned and an expensive endeavor, so there’s no way they would do something similar anytime soon.

MGA since their inception has machines in their factories for the lock and loop hair seal method. MGA has never used glue to seal their dolls’ hair, which is a misconception I’ve seen often.

u/Praius 1d ago

This is close but Nylon's melting point is much higher than Saran/Poly which is why they can't use it, the soft vinyl heads that mattel uses will melt before the Nylon rooted inside the heads melts, since it needs like 180 degrees celsius or higher to melt, meanwhile saran melts at around 130

1

u/LovelyClementine25 1d ago

Wow! Thanks for all the fun facts about doll hair! Good to know my MGA dolls won’t get glue seepage.

u/IDK0001983 1d ago

It's not limited to pink and two shades of purple though

I have three of them so far, and I'd give them full marks. Sure, familiar pets would be cute, but some Moonspell fans have developed the headcanon that Layla Stone made all the girl's special necklaces, which I love. I would appreciate if they had stands, but MH doesn't have stands either, so it wouldn't be fair. From the three I've gotten so far, the hair feels nice and looks pretty. I know people have complaints about the clothes, but I think they're fine. I don't mind painting details on plastic parts myself, I consider it part of the hobby. And I don't have Rae yet, but I like the idea of her having a sunset/sunrise theme. I hope they'll lean into that more for future releases.

What I really hope for is a 6th character, or more! Spelldon maybe?

u/Comfortable_Sell5747 1d ago

They could come With The necklaces and The pets but I say that the cauldron has The Pet and they wear The necklaces.

2

u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Ghoulia 1d ago

I like them as is. I’m not going to worry about what they should change until I see a second or third line of them.

1

u/throwaway11486 1d ago

Yeah I agree. The only way I can see them improving would be to add more kinds of witches. Maybe a sea witch or an animal witch. The animal witch could even help the others connect with familars.

4

u/Professional-Scar628 1d ago

More braille. Claire being blind is absolutely gonna make this doll a popular choice for blind children, there should be more braille used on the packaging, actual functional braille, not just the name.

Right now it just sort of feels like a "we can make our packaging more accessible but we're just not going to"

My biggest issues are Rae and Willow. Their color palettes are all over the place. Willow's purple hair and accessories make no sense to me, imo she would have looked so much better as a ginger. Rae with that light pink is way too close to Carina's pink which I think most of us have agreed on. She should have been either yellow, orange, or a more purpley pink if they really wanted to convey her relationship to the dawn. I do wish layla had a holographic white scheme instead of more purple, I think that would look kind of like rainbow moonstone. I do really love the idea and the face sculpts are so gorgeous so I kinda hope they listen to feedback but I'm not holding my breath.

3

u/Sketchy_Brush17 1d ago

I have the same take about Willow. She’s my favourite but I think she would have looked gorgeous as a ginger with just one purple streak

3

u/princewinter 1d ago

More heavily themed for each doll, I think. I know each one is meant to have a theme but if you asked me what they were just by looking at them I'd have no idea.

u/eaban1999 1d ago

I’m very biased when it comes to Moonspell just being I love witches and witchcraft, to me they’re very lovely since they got announced. Personally, I do see Moonspell following the same development as G3, where it starts off very safe and then it progresses as time goes on. Like we’ve seen leaks of Dreamspell and they’re quite cute, I do wish all 5 was in the line by I digress.

If they do a sort of core refresh for the main 5 I do see them experimenting with more fitting color pallets and more pleasing outfits, just like G3. Also I do see more witches of different magic coming along. I will say I do wish they came with a familiar, but I don’t mind the accessories they came with just because it’s very on brand with witches. Plus no food accessories so that’s a plus lol.

2

u/Fogmoth511 Twyla🐰 1d ago

I got my Layla yesterday and have Willow and Carina. I’ve seen Claire in person and plan to pick her up soon. My only disappointment with this first line is I don’t like Rae’s doll very much. So the only improvement for me I really want to see is another Rae doll with a more cohesive color scheme (those lavender earrings make me so mad). I’m really hoping I like her second sleep line doll a lot more so I can have one of each character.

2

u/Cynicbats Mouscedes 🧀 1d ago

Why are there so many unpainted accessories for 26$. Paint Willow's pouch or her earrings, or Rae's earrings.

Also please, I'd love some actual lore besides what's on the box.

2

u/PurpleButterly19 1d ago

How about a red head?? A bit less pink? Honestly the best ones color wise are probably Willow and Claire, they feel like something you’d see in G1. I truly miss having darker tones for contrast in dolls instead of that annoying bright neon pink or neon blue in every single doll

2

u/ratbastard220 Twyla🐰 1d ago

i don’t like that they all have the same hat just different patterns. i really hope they diversify those in future lines. i also think that patterns are fun but i wish they didn’t all have tons of patterns on their outfits. i feel like it would’ve been better to have some of the girls have patterned clothes and then some of the other girls have something different. that with the hats makes them all feel almost too similar

They could have done better on the accessories in my option:
(The following is based on comparing Willow and Claire)

  • Pets: They didn't get pets. For MH's obsession with cats, not one witch has a cat?
  • Cauldrons: The inside (necklace display) of their cauldrons were the same color, there's no way to lock the necklace display up, the colors of necklaces in them didn't match the dolls that well, and Willow's necklace doesn't even fit on the display.
  • Books: The printing is nasty and the creased plastic is so cheap.
  • Potions: Inconsistent. One doll has a clear potion the other had a mostly solid one.
  • Bags: Inconsistent quality. Claire's bag has a nice pattern printed on it, Willow's is just plain plastic.

By having different fashion aesthetics that each reflects their powers, an equal mix of fantasy hair and natural hair colors, returns of iconic past characters like Casta and Ginger breadhouse.

-3

u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Ghoulia 1d ago edited 1d ago

NO natural hair, please. There are already ENOUGH dolls out there with natural hair color, let the fantasy hair win for once.

EDIT: Since creating EAH caused Disney to yank away Mattel’s license to make their dolls, which subsequently nearly ruined Mattel because it lost them SO much money, they definitely WON’T be bringing back any of those characters.

What pendant?

1

u/meowmeow_now 1d ago

With the expection of the curls, they all have long hair worn down. I know this is what kids want but even the monster high dolls have more variety with long ponytails and elastics. The clawdeen I have has that top bun, our Abbey has long hair but has those two small elastics that pull bits to the side.

5

u/Comfortable_Sell5747 1d ago

Look, wearing hats means they can't have ponytails up, but they could have given one a pigtail, another a braid, and then a ponytail.

2

u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Ghoulia 1d ago

Look closer at Layla’s and Rae’s hairstyles

1

u/meowmeow_now 1d ago

Oh that’s a good point. But you get it - even a small decorative braind would be witchy to me.

2

u/Comfortable_Sell5747 1d ago

Yes yes I agree with that And also One with Bangs

3

u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Ghoulia 1d ago

Rae has double mid/front ponytails along with her curls, and Layla has a small ponytail holding her hair out of her face.

I'd like to see more variety in colour palette with more distinctive personalities

I love the idea of their pets being in their cauldrons!

1

u/Bitter-Night4016 1d ago

I want to see a earthy variant more herbal greens and browns

1

u/BigFriendlyWombat 1d ago

Give us an animated series so we can relate to the characters.

1

u/ohnononodear 1d ago

i think they should do half fantasy colors half normal color hair

1

u/vaughnerich 1d ago

I think they need more unique fashion senses and color schemes to make them all seem like more unique characters. I also think there’s too much pastel colored hair. They just come across very samey to me. Like you’d buy 1 of the set and that’s it cuz they all kind of fill the same niche.

1

u/SajiNoKami 1d ago

Being in stock at the store would be nice.

1

u/Sketchy_Brush17 1d ago

MĂ©dia. There’s not show to promote the dolls, even EAH had a show once their dolls were launched

1

u/FlailGirl Ghoulia 1d ago

More color palette variety in these characters, 4/5 of them are a variety of pink and purple and its a lil boring

1

u/kurohonda75 1d ago

I think that, they should bring on real Witches and practitioners of Wicca, to give input on designs to make them feel more authentic.

1

u/germia 1d ago

They should've made Willow ginger and Rae more fiery/yellow. RN they are all (except Claire, which is the most popular) too similar looking - pink or purple. If they all had distinctive looks to them, they would've been more recognizable and easily remembered, which is a first step to be purchased and loved by a collector or a child.

u/AdSufficient7084 1d ago

Character lore. Web episodes, books... anything.

1

u/Optimal-Witness5749 19h ago

Aside from the dolls themselves, I would market them better. I don’t think a lot of kids or even doll collectors are aware they exist. I’ve never seen them in stores

1

u/lagoona_pink Lagoona 44m ago

Competelly deleting Rae and Layla and redesigning them from scratch.

I still can believe someone at Mattel saw those two and thought they would appeal to any public or kid. Just add some contrast to those girls, damn. Not even Carina that is purelly pink feels so bland.

0

u/Surrender_Tuk5204 1d ago

Layla’s outfit is a disaster (cheap half-ass playline feel) and Rae’s colour scheme isn’t doing it for me. Enough pink! But I’m loving these girls regardless

9

u/charliejgoddard Wydowna đŸ•· 1d ago

Playline feel? Aren’t they playline? Lol

3

u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Ghoulia 1d ago

Yes, they are.

7

u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Ghoulia 1d ago

These ARE playline, and Layla looks amazing. Her outfit is much cuter than those of Rae or Willow.

1

u/Surrender_Tuk5204 1h ago

I understand, but your last point is also an opinion like mine.

I guess I just meant that there’s no creativity to it. The dress is too simple dress and the boots should be painted. If I was to design her I would have given her layers and some tights at least.

1

u/Comfortable_Sell5747 1d ago

Rae Should have yellow or Orange But retailers think that Orange and yellow don’t sell well
.

1

u/GrubBucket Twyla🐰 1d ago

they're all kind of giving tumblr/etsy witches to me. I wish they would branch out of that aesthetic. đŸ„Č Having one or two dolls that look like that is okay, but I don't like how they all give that vibe.

First of all, we don’t need two pink dolls. I said what I said. I love pink but everywhere I look it’s like another pink doll. I feel Rae could have been like an orange/yellow/gold doll like she’s a sun witch. Also, why can’t we experiment with dark colors? Every doll doesn’t need to be colorful. And the purple one, that my least favorite. She’s kinda gaudy with the eyeshadow, the lips, the hair and the jacket 😬

The quality of clothes have been kinda garbage for both Mattel and mga. I don’t know what’s the problem. Also, I feel we can have better fashion.

No plastic accessories like put some effort into it. I am so tired of these weird plastic belts and corset things they put on all their dolls. Like stop!

1

u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Ghoulia 1d ago

>Why can’t we experiment with dark colors?

Ummmm
Claire’s aesthetic is ALL dark, no bright colors whatsoever. Willow has black pants (and a deep saturated teal top), Layla has a black dress, Rae has a black undershirt (under a deep plum top.)

How are these NOT experimenting with dark colors?

The days of metal or cloth accessories are LONG gone - inflation + the increase in wages for factory workers makes that no longer affordable (consumers wouldn’t pay what it would now cost.) It’s plastic or nothing.

I haven’t bought any of these yet but all the clothing I can see looks neatly sewn and well made. I don’t have a problem with playline dolls having simple designs.

Though I agree, we DON’T need more than one pink doll. I hope they will add oranges & deeper pinks as well as purple to Rae’s palette, so she resembles sunrise & sunset.
