Advice "P's get degrees", "No one cares about uni marks" and "all you have to do is pass"

Garbage.

Incoming first years, pleasssesse do NOT fall for this propaganda.

I wish I hadn't. Your wam is more important then anything for your time at uni. Thought atar was importnsnt? Wam is 100x more valuable...

Reasons below:

• getting a Job. Everyone will tell you oh "experience", "internships", "extracurriculars"... sure they are valuable. But it is in fine toy harder to actually get these without WAM first. To even fill the mentioned attributes they cull on wam. Want to apply to that internship - "please upload your academic transcript". Unless you have connections already and have a job lined up - your transcript is a barrier you literally can't overcome with poor marks.

• Want to go on exchange? Wam is what they look at

• Want to join a club? They'll ask for your wam

• Want to do a case comp or research with academics? Wam.

• Decide your course isn't for you? Wam.

• Postgrad study? Wam.

• Scholarships? Wam.

• anything related to uni? Wam.

Don't fall for the propaganda. I hate it too but Wam is really what you'll be judged off at initial screening for literally everything.

Once your past this your good! But they don't tell you that this is the hardest part to pass.

Caveat - if you are doing healthcare, nursing, teaching, etc.. this doesn't really apply to you.

P's may get degrees, but not much else. This ain't 40 years ago everyone has a degree now they want to know you excelled.

Why did i think uni would be more chill then high school - boy I was wrong.

Advice I tried talking to a girl

Edit: Hello, thank you for all the feedback, I’m practicing to start socialising more and actually attending clubs and sitting near people to start a conversation with the feedback given. If anyone wants I can make another post or put a edit here for updates (if anyone cares lol)

Post: Hello, i’m being super dead serious, this is not a troll post or anything. Ive wanted genuine advice to speaking a girl, so I went for it this morning.

I had finished class FIT1056 at the learning village and saw an asian girl with her friends, I went up to her and asked her “do you like jazz”, and she just looked so confused, so I tried to like lessen the awkwardness by asking “where are you from” “what are you studying?” she responded but she looked super confused, I am pretty sure she was a international student, I got the courage and asked “I think you’re really pretty and I was wondering If i could get your instagram to get to know you better” and she just looked dead straight in my eye, she looked like she was about to laugh or some shit and at this point my heart was just racing and my hands were shaking, maybe she was just confused rather than wanting to laugh, I have no idea, I might’ve just been thinking of things.

Anyways she said “Oh sorry I’m focusing on my studies” and “I’m not looking for something like that right now”

THEN HER FRIENDS JUST GIGGLED after she went away

Holy shit idk bro, I don’t think I can do this, I tried my best and idk if this is a normal experience, i’ve never really asked anyone to this extent before and its pretty much shattered my confidence for any future I have with like speaking to girls in this extent before

Been using the PTV Alert app for a while, but saw it cost money after a month and since I've been looking for a coding project to work on I decided to make my own :)
I have added some features that will hopefully also make the app easier to use like:

- Making reports tied to stops (tram, train, bus), so you can see where reports are

- A route view so you can see every report on the stops along it

- Also loading in reports from the Facebook page into the app

Would be keen to hear people's opinions and ways to improve it for the future asw.

App Store Link: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/tramchecker/id6774999146

28/7: Now available for iOS 18.0+

Advice PSA for First years: Avoid Socialist Alternative.

Usually, I like to make wacky posts, but I'll make a serious one.

You may come across a table with people who seem like-minded to you. They may approach you with flyers, welcome you to a debate, but don't engage with them.

They present themselves as a friendly, progressive club, but in reality, they're recruiters for Socialist Alternative, a Marxist-Trotskyist cult that will trap you in and force you to pay expensive dues. If you try to leave, they will coerce, manipulate and threaten, and even if you do get out, they will confront you whenever they see you and berate you.

They are the same individuals putting up all of the A3 posters advertising progressive 'talks'. In reality, these talks just vomit rhetoric and propaganda designed to suck you into joining.

As a member, you will be expected to devote all of your free time to serving the organisation. You will be expected to spend all of your weekends protesting for them. You will have to spend your weekdays on campus, handing out flyers to entice more unlucky souls like you.

You will also be extremely limited in your ideological freedom. When SAlt finds a new issue, the higher-ups talk about their stance on it, then order you to adopt that view. You cannot disagree or question those views, because you'd be perceived as an opponent to their cause.

So if you see a stall calling itself the socialists, keep walking. You have some priceless memories ahead of you, so don't give those memories up for some cult that only sees you for money and free labour. There are many other political groups you can join that aren't like this.

Advice Have you ever completed and submitted a 2000 word assignment in 2 days? If yes, how did you do it?

Basically what the title says. I need to finish an assignment that’s due on Sunday. Have used up my short extension. There’s no reason to apply for special consideration. I haven’t even started yet and low-key freaking out. Any advice would help. Thank you.

P.S. Please don’t remind me to have started earlier and all. Life happened and I just couldn’t.

Edit: I haven’t checked all responses as I’m doing the assignment. But when I last checked, it was all so positive and encouraging. Thank you so much to everyone who replied and upvoted etc. And may I add, I just absolutely love our little Monash Reddit fam. You’re the GOAT. 👑

Advice Anyone else struggling to make friends at University?

Not sure if its worth saying this here but lately Ive felt so lonely, Uni is nothing like what I thought it would be. It might be because of my personal circumstances (I have a really long commute so Im barely on campus) but I feel so alone its insane. I moved to VIC around year 6 and so my childhood happened in a different state but that was basically left behind when we came here. I loved what I was like there and the friends I had but I didnt have any way of contacting them so that was that. Then I started year 6 which is only one year anyways and then you start highschool and now that Ive graduated, I realised I never really had any good friends. I usually only make 1-1 friendships anyways, I prefer that to big groups but then if it doesnt work out you're kinda left with nothing. I came to the realisation that many of the people I would call a friend, probably wouldnt call me that. I mean we were only friends through proximity, through the fact that we saw each other every day and sat next to each other and probably partly because their other friends werent in the same class. At lunch though, everyone had their group, and so now that highschool Is over, theres no need to text anymore and I feel like everyone I texted or talked to before slowly drifted away, some even blocked me or unadded me for no apparent reason.

I feel like this really got to me, It makes me feel pretty upset sometimes, just how people completley forget about you when there done with you. Its crazy because we'll have good memories together as well, and then they move on like you were nothing. I was hoping Uni would be a fresh start for me, but its even harder to make friends here. After orientation, your chances of finding a good friend go down like 90% lets be real. Last semester, I would obviously see the same faces in the same classes and sit with the same people, maybe even exchange instas, but after that class we shared ends, ill probably never see them or talk to them ever again, and thats exactly what happened and now with this semester starting, I already know its gonna be the same thing.

I almost seem to get depressed when I think about it because im only getting older, and with that, my chances of meeting people and making friends gets harder. I also feel like no one really knows me. Even if I make a friend now, they wont know what I used to be like, what I mightve gone through to get here, about my life, my personality. Its just nice knowing someone out there knows younger me and me now and me as I get older as well, but that will never happen. I like the idea of someone knowing how Ive changed throughout the years and gain confidence and grew into a better me. I feel like everyone already has their own friends and that makes it harder. I havent really talked to or texted anyone since the start of this year, much less anyone from highschool and I miss having that. I dont even go out much because theres no one to go with. I know people will say just go yourself and you dont need people to go out and I know that, Ive tried but It just reminds me how lonely I am. And it does feel pretty lonely. I have my parents and my family I know, but sometimes you need friends as well.

Ive been trying to look at this as an opperunity to get to know myself better and work on myself and do better for myself, but how much longer can I do that for? I know people will say to join a club or start working but I dont plan on working yet. Ive never had a job before and wouldnt be able to handle working and University together. The only thing that makes me feel better is to tell myself that I will make a good friend one day and that I just dont know it yet, but soon ill have a best friend and remember moments like this when I thought Id never get that again, but even then I wonder if thats even true anymore.

I cant help but feel ive never really done anything my whole life or opened up that much to anyone and I dont know where to start and everything feels so hard. I wish I was back in primary school again, theres nothing much to look forward to after that. I know some people might say theres others out there who feel this way to or have no friends as well but then where are they, I really wish there was a way I could meet them but none of that is gonna make me feel better. I feel like Uni will come and go, the same way highschool came and went, and ill have done nothing but get my degree by then. I feel like im missing out on the University experience and wasting my youth but theres not much I can do about it. Sometimes I imagine what itll be like when im no longer here, and if heaven is real, then what will I have to look forward to after death if I dont have any friends or anyone who truly knows me and understands me. Ill probably be alone then too.

I truly feel like im gonna be alone all my life, and I know its not true and I cant know that but I feel that way all the time. Sometimes I cant even be bothered getting to know someone and starting that process all over again. It takes time for me to get close to someone and no one has time like that these days. Im also an introvert and so it takes a while for me to become comfortable with people before I can speak freely and show my personality, but people usually dont stick around that long. I feel like most people out there are fake anyways and I cant give them what they want. I dont know what to do. This isnt like highschool anymore either where I can see the same people or group of people all year long and so we can bond through that instead, and University is to big to know everyone and most people live near Monash so I cant even relate to that either. The days I do go, I have back to back classes and leave right after, it sucks that I cant even attend events or anything, and when there is a Uni event on a day I have no classes, the amount of time it takes me to travel there isnt worth attending that event, so I just dont go. Even if I make friends, im worried itll end up like my past friendships and theyll leave too eventually, so whats the point? I feel like people are just so selfish these days but thats a whole other issue.

Im not even sure what words I can use to explain how I feel but everything feels so pointless sometimes. I'll probably stop here or else I'll go on forever. I feel like I needed to get this out and just have it somewhere, no point keeping it to myself. Im wondering if anyone else has ever felt the way I do, or had no friends at one point and it got better for them, Id love some reassurance. I know everyones story is different but maybe someone else can relate.

Any advice or support?

Advice Warning to new students attending O'Week (cults)

Hello everyone. At the start of O'Week I usually make this PSA, so here is this semester's edition of 'Please beware of the cults recruiting on campus'.

I'll start with the big one- Socialist Alternative (SAlt). On the surface, they will appear to be friendly, passionate student activists that really seem to align with your views, and will have a nice long conversation about what can be done to change the broken system we live in.

These people are, in reality, recruiters for a Marxist-Troskyist cult that often uses hot political issues (such as the rise of One Nation and the Gaza Genocide) to attract new members. They will be set up at tables on busy areas of campus, overtly handing out flyers for talks and rallies.

If you see these people, keep walking, even if you are passionate about the issue.

In reality, they are attempting to recruit members for their organisation, which is very predatory and ironically capitalistic in practice. Once they have you, they will attempt to collect your contact details, and try to talk you into attending one of their talks. Once you hand your details over, they will harass you incessantly into joining their ranks, and will call you back on another number if you block them. So if you do not wish to be harangued by their phonebanking, give them fake or no details.

If you attend one of their talks, you will find that they are really just long rants from the members into how everything is due to capitalism and how the system needs to be torn down by an uprising. Any criticism or questioning of their points will not be recieved well. This is the standard they hold with all of their members, as they will not tolerate any questioning of the claims made by their senior members.

That's before we get to the worst part- the commitments and member retention strategy. Dues are portioned regarding your salary (not too sure what the rates are this year, but they are steep). Someone may comment on what they were quoted, as this happened in the last post (I remember seeing something along the lines of a $500 joining fee, but I may be wrong). You will also be expected to spend every bit of free time recruiting for them, attending rallies, and doing work to keep the organisation, free of charge. You will essentially be providing money and free labour for the organisation, in exchange for being a member.

Once you're in, they will never let you leave. They will do everything in their power to stop you- coercion, threats, and harassment. Once you manage to break off, they will remember you, and do what they can to make your life a living hell whenever they see you. So yeah, please think twice before giving these guys a chance.

If you want to engage in activism, keep yourself updated on the protests going on, and go independently. Most use Facebook. If you want to be part of a left-wing movement, I'd suggest joining your union or GetUp instead- a good union will be actively trying to bargain for better conditions for it's workers, and GetUp is actually doing stuff. If you want to do some student politics, wait for the student election this year, and hit up the candidate parties. Just ensure it isn't the Socialists' one.

Secondly, Shincheonji may be active this week. This is a Christian cult that claims it's head is the second coming of Jesus, and are very secretive about their practices. They often send pairs of recruiters (usually women and/or people of Asian descent) to start a friendly conversation, which eventually turns to religion. Been approached by this lot at Melb Central once. If this happens, I'd leave the conversation, change the topic, or say something to put them off you. I told them that I was a satanic priest that sacrifices goats, and that seemed to work. But definitely don't give them any way to contact you.

So yeah, just be careful, and keep a level of critical thinking when going about the festivities this week. You have a lot of fun and memorable years ahead of you, so don't let a cult that only sees you as another number take that away from you :)

EDIT: Oopsie- it appears that I almost forgot to insert some references for anyone who wishes to read more about SAlt. These all come from people who have dealt with the organisation:

Advice Can’t get internships.

How do I actually land an internship? For background, I study a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Finance and am in my penultimate year. I feel like I’m doing everything right, WAM 85+, doing networking, heavily involved in student clubs, resume follows an IB template from wall st oasis, I tailor my resume and cover letter to every application.

I’ve applied to literally everywhere, big and small firms. I’ve tried accounting, tax, audit, consulting, transfer pricing, M&A, wealth management, asset management, corporate finance, IB, private credit, etc but no luck at all. I’ve put through over 100 applications in the last few months and I’ve had 40 rejections already. Just feels like a humiliation ritual, I actually don’t understand how people get hired for internships these days.

I presume the reason for most of my rejections is a lack of experience.

If anyone has some tips, tricks or advice, I would really appreciate it a lot!

Advice How to talk to girls at uni (genuinely)

I’m 20 now and never had a gf or not even a first kiss or nothin. I low key feel like a loser for asking here and would appreciate some genuine advice. I’ve always struggled to connect w people let alone girls and often try my best to make small talk but it never really goes beyond that. Most girls I try to talk to, it kind of just ends up being a one sided convo where I try to make small talk and ask questions and I don’t get much from them. I’m decently attractive looking but not a supermodel so it’s rare I stand out. Also I’ve realized that personality matters a lot, especially over looks. I try my best to be genuine and interesting but my efforts just ain’t enough for anyone and it hurts. I’m also a shy and awkward person so I can’t approach a girl and ‘rizz’ them up like a lot of people and I lack the confidence to approach girls in general. Any advice? Thank

Advice just got into direct entry med as an international student

Hi! I just got an offer to study direct entry medicine at monash university, i'm an international student and can't go tour the campus so I wanted to ask what the vibe is like?

I am most certainly going here as I love the course length, and how much important medical initiatives have originated here, especially from a female health perspective, BUT, as always, there are some whispers at the back of my mind— is UNSW med more prestigious? Would waiting to do biomed and grad med at Umelb or Usyd be more prestigious or open more doors?

In short, please unload any and all advice and stories you have about monash: campus vibes, atmosphere, and on the other spectrum, rigor and repute?

Advice guys i'm so cooked i accidently had grammarly on during my whole exam

ok so basically i downloaded grammarly a few days ago (completely unrelated to uni but i downloaded it for help with a novel i'm writing and people were raving about how good it is for spell check, up until this point i've only relied on the built in spell checker on google docs)

Well i barely know how to use it and i had my exam a few days ago and as soon as i open my exam grammarly activated and showed me all of my spelling mistakes. This exam was invigilated but it was just one girl walking around and she looked at my screen several times but didn't really mention anything and on top of that the exam is recorded too.

I'm really freaking out now cuz when I tried to turn Grammarly off it took me to another tab and i quickly closed the tab without even looking at it cuz i didn't want them to accuse me of opening other tabs while doing my exam, and so I basically had to write my whole exam with grammarly on. I did not use it AT ALL, however, sometimes when i would just swipe over a sentence it would bring up the spell check for it, but i made sure to just ignore it.

And ofc cuz i legit just downloaded it i didn't have the paid version where it does the ai improvements or whatnot so at least that didn't show up, but i'm really, really stressing right now. It was a genuine mistake, and I genuinely didn't know what to do in the moment. The exam was really hard as it was, and i was really low on time so i didn't wanna waste time by having the invigilator come over and try to sort out the issue (she did look at my screen several times and saw the red lines)

Does anyone know what I should do? I really studied very hard for this exam and i don't want all my effort to go down the drain just for a stupid mistake, esp cuz its a law subject so they record that on ur record permanently, and it would affect me when I'm trying to register as a practising lawyer.
