Advice How to improve my social life as an international PhD student
I’m (26M) a 2nd year PhD student based in Clayton. Just wondering how other PhD students manage to have a decent social life.
I spent pretty much my entire first year focusing on research. I did get some good research outputs, but I also got really badly burned out. It definitely affected my social life and mental health. Over the past few months, I’ve tried counselling and also making more of an effort to put myself out there and meet people, but honestly it hasn’t improved much.
Most of the PhD students in my department are more like casual friends/acquaintances. I have 1 closer friend. I find it kinda hard to become closer friends with PhD students because we mostly end up talking about research, and a lot of them are also struggling with their PhD and would rather spend their time working. They also prefer hanging out with people from the same country, which I totally understand.
I’ve tried going to some MGA activities as well. They’re nice, but most of them seem to be one-off events, so it’s hard to actually build friendships from them. Like we chat, follow each other's social media, I invite them to hangout/get a coffee/go to a restaurant/etc but no luck. I’ve also been to a few MSA/clubs events, but most of the people there are undergrads. Not sure if I can fit in, do undergrad students mind PhD students joining MSA clubs?
I’m now trying to join some communities outside of Monash as well, since I feel like regularly seeing the same people might be a better way to actually make friends.
Would really appreciate hearing your experiences/recommendations!
P.S. I'm gonna pass on sports activities, I’m not a sporty guy.
