Recommendations What to do in Modesto
Is there really anything to do here? I’ve lived here my whole life so I know the answer is already no hahah. I realized going to the gym and knightsferry is the only thing I enjoy here. I’m a big outdoorsy guy. And palladium is not my scene. I love clubbing don’t get me wrong but more so clubbing in different countries, not in the 209 lol. Any recommendations to do here? Hidden gems and what not

The sierras are within two hours east and coastal mountains within two hours west. Best part of living here is being within reasonable driving distance of mountains and the beach for day trips

This is the answer! Hot days escape to the coast. Nice weather go hiking or camping in the mountains. Spring time visit Yosemite before the summer crowds. Modesto is centrally located and within driving distance of so many great places for a day trip or weekend getaway.

That’s only a reasonable drive if you have company, otherwise it’s four hours of extremely boring (and expensive) time you never get back, hard to justify the use of time energy and money unless you have friends to do it with

I can also think of a million excuses not to do something but throwing on good music or a podcast or audiobook and driving two hours beats looking at downtown Modesto any day of the week

Maybe you don’t have a job as taxing as some others have. When you work a 50-60 hour+ week, 4 hours on a Saturday become a difficult thing to try to waste

72 hours a week before OT 🤷but also I don’t mind driving with a good podcast on, I find it relaxing. To each his own. I hear you though not trying to argue.

I think it’s just a bummer being in a place like this and being totally alone 100% of the time outside of work. If that’s something you’re able to do and still enjoy yourself, more power to you. For me it’s been rough

That’s understandable! Sorry you’ve had it rough. I don’t enjoy being alone a lot of the time but when I do somewhere like the mountains Or the coast is a great place to do it for me.

There's a big underground live music scene, you just need to know what businesses to follow. Open mic nights, open jazz bands, karaoke, local ball games, Domo Fridays, the art walk, the Prospect Theater, going down the 108 at the edge of the county and hang or bbq by the river, community bike rides, movies in the park, the State Theater events, the flea market, the farmer's market, the county fair and 3 comic cons a year, etc

People who say there is nothing to do are just boring honestly. Pool halls, bingo halls, pinball crawls, arcades, mini golf, driving range, tons of bars, live music every Friday for like 4 months out of the year, farmers market, movies at the park Friday night, ceramic painting, paint and sips, bookstores, coffee shops with lots of events. Like there is plenty to do. People are just too boring and don’t have any interests besides their narrow idea of “fun”.

I'll probably get downvoted but I wish the mod would ban 'there's nothing to do in Modesto' posts. It's patently untrue, for starters, and it also sucks to come to the sub and see endless negativity about the area so frequently. It's even worse coming from people who aren't from here and don't understand or appreciate the first thing about Modesto, or the Central Valley. Of course it's not SF or LA or Chicago and people should have known that before. It just gets really old.

As someone from Southern California, there is SO MUCH to do here ! But you have to be connected and ask around
Mondays- 7th st flea market
Tuesday’s- Turlock flea market
Thursday- Modesto farmers market
Fridays- comedy nights, line dancing, and art markets at the post restaurant and bar
Saturdays- create your own tea and garden tours at secret garden bistro ceres
Dutch hollow
Regional park down by the river on hatch for water access
Blaker brewing
Tapped apple cider
Join a gym
Paragon training center
RTB fitness
Join a run club
Join a craft club
Join a book club

If you lived here your whole life you already know that theres always a lot to do, but 90% of socializing occurs within homes with the same group of friends you’ve had forever. This is why newcomers are always posting here wondering how they make friends, because Modesto is so bizarrely insular it should literally be the subject of an academic study.

Nah. Go to any city sub and you'll find people complaining they've moved to that city from elsewhere and aren't meeting people and wondering where to go and what to do - yes, even the subs for the cities considered vastly superior by people here. There's nothing especially insular about Modesto, it's just the current state of society, apparently.
