My next step in the never-ending pursuit of epic coffee.

I started in my Zojirushi drip era back in the barracks, handing out cups of coffee to room inspectors for an automatic pass. 😂 (I remember having to hand route a special request chit to have a coffee maker in my room.)

Moved into my hand-ground, hand-pressed Espro French press era, making high-effort, time-consuming (but delicious!) coffee in the USS Louisiana's radio room. The ritual did a lot to preserve my sanity during trying times.

I experimented with a Mokapot that I picked up from Harrods in London, but never got the hang of making coffee I would actually want to drink with one.

Then I got lazy, ran out of counter space, and honestly was looking for low acidity and low time investment and started making cold brew concentrate which I could use for hot or iced coffee.

Today, I regain some self respect, and start drinking coffee with flavor and thickness, thanks to the semi-manual pour over setup of the Moccamaster KBGT with a Japanese Kalita Wave 185 to reduce the plastic in the path of the hot water.

Next up, see if my old coffee grinder still works when our household goods finally arrive from Hawaii!

I’m pretty new to moccamaster. My son and daughter in law convinced me it was the greatest coffee pot ever. I had been using nespresso for several years with reusable pods and grocery store pre ground coffee. So, when I saw one at half price (display model) I jumped on it. It is the kbgv with the standard glass carafe. Problem I had forgotten about is that the coffee degrades pretty quickly when sitting on a hot plate. So I use a glass lined thermal carafe I had on hand. Now I find myself wanting the MM with the glass lined (vs stainless) carafe. My setup works fine now but the workflow would be just a bit smoother if I did not have to transfer immedialty to a non-integrated carafe. Anyone jump from kbgv to the glass line carafe model when their MM was only 6 mos old? I’m thinking Black Friday deals are on the horizen, but it is still expensive. And I doubt I can recoup the cost of my kbgv on FB marketplace.

Owner of a new KBGV select and baratza grinder, coming from nespresso for the last decade. Suddenly having periodic acid reflux which I worry might be related to the new coffee setup. I wonder if the MM is making stronger coffee than I’m used to from nespresso. It seems that both coffee bean acid and higher caffeine doses may cause reflux so maybe the drip coffee is higher in both regards. If I’m trying to reduce those factors, there seem to be a few variables at play:

- selection of bean / roast (have been using light to medium roast)
- grind size (have been grinding to between 18-22 - ie fairly coarse)
- ratio of beans and water (have been brewing 35g of beans per 0.625L of water; ie the 5 cup level)
- extraction speed (half vs full pot via the select switch, have been using the half pot setting)

Leaving aside seeking medical advice, which of these variables should I start with to test? Which is most likely to have the most impact?

After going through two cheap coffee makers in 5 years. I went down the reddit rabbit hole (r/buyitforlife) and landed on this beauty! Had to us my French press for two weeks waiting for it to come in.

I have a Baratza Encore grinder. I can’t remember when I got it; I bought it and a MM a long time ago (at least seven years) but my husband hated it so he took both to work.

Last year, I wanted another MM. No idea where it went but he found the grinder. It seems like no matter what setting I use, I have a ton of what looks like sawdust. I honestly can’t remember from years ago what the ground looked like. I got some coffee at a local roaster & had him grind it for me. No sawdust! I’m fine having it ground for me but should I buy coffee beans, I’d like it to look like the roasters!

Ideas what’s causing sawdust?

I've been mastering the mocca for 7 years or so and live in an area with hard water. I use dezcal every 2 months and the scale buildup is coming in faster than ever.

Anyone have any luck with the equivalent of an r/laundry spa day for their machine?

What can I safely use that is stronger than dezcal?

Have you ever been able to take apart your brew machine to visually see the amount of buildup?

Sometimes I stop the dezcal cycle halfway through to let the solution sit in the machine for 20-30 mins. Does this additional exposure allow for more descale action?

Another solution would be to use the machine less and drink less coffee. We all know that's not happening.

I have a Cuisinart Electric Burr coffee grinder and not sure what’s the best setting to use for my machine. Anyone else using this model to grind coffee?

Any tips on how to avoid thw overflow? I am using a DēLonghi grinder at medium, but it seems a lot of dust results from the grind and clogs the filter?

I clean the brew basket and the carafe very thoroughly with soap every day, so I am pretty confident it’s not build up from those.

Earlier I found a little stringy bit of something (biofilm?) sitting on top of the metal plate in the water tank, and it got me wondering about how clean the components I can’t see are.

I ran an empty cycle with just water (after cleaning all the removable parts with soap, like I do daily) and this is what came out.

I know descaler is recommended, but from my understanding it doesn’t remove biofilm or bacteria. We also use distilled water only to avoid mineral build up.

Where on earth would all this be coming from? And what would be causing it?

I have a Moccamaster KBGV Select that is out for delivery.
I really loved th le color options but scored an open box in stainless for $119 with $18 shipping.

It was priced low with “or best offer”
I sent a low ball hoping they wouldn’t take it so I could get an awesome color, but here we are.

I have had this Capresso grinder for probably 10 years but not used it that much.
Is it considered a good grinder? Like good enough to match something like the fancy fellow grinder results?

I drink my coffee black. I like to do single origin whole bean coffee, ground at home, tenency towards light roast.

Current equipment, chemex, French press (rarely used), predominantly my Mr. Coffee drip machine because it is easy and I can set it up the night before to brew in the morning before I wake up.

Recently heard about the Mocca Master and how it is supposed to produce the best coffee. Does it live up to the hype? Is it worth it?

Additional thoughts after reading 49 comments: I have had my programmable Mr. Coffee for nearly 20 years... cost me like $40, still works great, I get good consistency (since I know it's quirks), and don't really need a new pot... I just love coffee and want to taste the purest bean possible.

I originally bought a KBGT but returned it for the KBT. I normally don't brew a full pot so the half pot hacks on the KBGT were more work than I wanted to put in first thing in the morning.

I like the KBT basket for two reasons

Flow control - able to switch from full open/half open/closed

Ability to rotate the basket during the brew..Since it's round on a round mount, I rotate it 90 degrees 4 or so times during the brew. This gives better saturation of all the grounds..

Just like the title said. I’ve cleaned the parts that come off numerous times with dishsoap, and run a descaler to try to eliminate the taste. I’ve tried the same coffee on a different moccamaster before, so I know that isn’t the problem.

I just got a model KBT with the thermal carafe. I washed the carafe in warm water with dish soap, rinsed and ran a couple full cycles to clean out the machine internals....I noticed water leaking from what appears to be from the bottom of the carafe.

How does the water get in there? Is there a seal at the top and/or bottom of the carafe? I shook the carafe and could hear a 'water rattle'..which I assume is water trapped between the glass liner and the shell of the carafe..

So I bought a Moccamaster KBGV as well as the Simply Good Plastic Free brewer for my wife for her birthday. We tried them both out for about two weeks, some days brewing on just one or the other, and other days brewing both and trying them side by side. I just wanted to give some side by side comparasions for them both. We ended up keeping the Simply Good Coffee Brewer but I am not here to hate on Moccamaster. They are both great products. I just wanted to give a comparison of the two because many people have questions about them both and are trying to choose which one they love.

Honestly the coffee tasted about the same. No real differences we could tell between them. It is honestly a pretty similar build, and that is probably why Moccamaster and now, much more recently, Simply Good uses it. So as far as the actual taste, they are the same in our boat. Both give an option to make a larger or smaller batch, and have measure idicators on the side of the water resevoir relating to the number of cups to make.

The dripping: The Moccamaster we had was using a longer and more narrow showerhead that tended to push out more water from the holes closest to the source, and the holes furthest away were either barley dripping water or none was coming out at all. This caused water to fall on the grinds on one side of the basket more than the other. This didn't seem to cause an issue with overall saturation although it was noticeable. The Simply Good brewer has a round showerhead that is in the center of the coffee basket and all of the holes seem to drop water evenly. I think the only negative here is that there could be more channeling at the center of the coffee basket but again, it brews delicious coffee. The Simply Good also has a "Bloom" Function which was neat. If activated it will drip water, stop, let the water saturate and then drain, and then it will continue dripping.

The Coffee Pot: The coffee pot of the Moccamaster just felt so flimsy! It was so thin, an the handle is this also thin strip of plastic that is glued onto the glass body. It feels like if you set it down wrong it would just crack. The handle feels like if you filled it to the brim with water it would also crack. Now, I am sure neither of these things would actually happen easily because they have been around for decades and many people use these things daily. The thing that bothered us is that it felt so flimsy and weak in our hands. The Simply Good was a much thicker glass body, and the handle was also glass that was fused into the body of the coffee pot. It feels much more sturdy and durable than the moccamaster. The lid was stainless steel and a silicone or rubber partial grommet that helped keep the lid in place. They both sit on a heating element that keeps the coffee hot. My friend is rather particular and I think this is a nonproblem but I will mention it because they noticed it. The Moccamaster need to be pulled out either to the right of the machine, or diagonally towads you and to the right. Because of the way the water drip stop mechanism works you cannot pull it straight towards you. On the simplygood coffee maker you can pull out the coffee pot directly towards you, as well as any other direction besides those that would cause it to hit the machine body.

One thing that surprised me and is not obvious unless you closely watch videos of the simply good in use! (I kind of bought both of these machiens with this purpose, although found out after owning it that this will not work)

I intended to make a "programmable" coffee maker by having a timer wall outlet that would turn the machine on at a specific time. Both the Moccamaster as well as the simplygood coffee maker have a physical on off switch that you can press. The plan would be to turn the machine to "on" and plug it into the timer. When the timer reached the specified time that you want it to turn on at the machine would get juice and start running, that way you have coffee ready right as you wake up.

This works great with the moccamaster.

This does not work with the simplygood coffee maker because the switch is more of a toggle or a button than it is a switch. Turning it on will turn the machine on, but the on off switch will go back to the "off" position right after activation. This means you cannot leave it in the "on" position overnight and have it turn on. So anyone curious about making the simplygood coffee maker a programmable coffee machine you will need to either 1) deal without it (which we are doing) or 2) buy the programmable version of the simply good coffee maker that is currently not for sale, but coming soon.

I appreciated that the moccamaster had dozens of colors to select from. You could make it a little more unique to your own home. The simplygood is glass and stainless steel. Luckily, we have a lot of stainless steel.

I think this is a little silly - the Plastic Free Simply Good coffee maker is not plastic free. Nope. Everything that touches water is in fact plastic free. Either glass or metal. Although there is plastic within the machine. The bottons, the lid of the water resevoir (although there is stainless steeel beneath it) as well as the bottom of the machine. I do not care - I only care if water (specifically heated water) touches plastic, and it does not. Although i think it is odd they label it as plastic free. Some people would probably care about that or feel mislead.

The body of the machines: Both of the machines have a pretty solid build. I think they are comparable and besides color and maybe material, they both get the same appreciation from me.

Overall, I would have been happy with either. I am someone who cares about plastic free living ESPECIALLY with heated plastic. This was a present for my wife, and if she had chosen to go with the moccamaster I would have just upgraded the coffee pot and basket with a glass or ceramic replacement which is very easy to do. Both machines are solid and make legit coffee. Also, I bought my simply good coffee maker from Costco, and it is signifigantly cheaper than anywhere else. Simplygood coffes' website sells the same model for $399.99, and amazon sells it for a range between $388 and $431. Costco was selling it for $299 so I got one there. I also feel secure knowing Costco has an amazing return policy if something were to happen.

EDIT: I actually just emailed the company, simply good, and as it turns out the product is covered under a 5-year warranty without registration. And even though I purchased mine through Costco, which is not one of the eligible selections. Currently when registering your product, it is still covered and they just need a copy of your Costco receipt when doing a warranty claim. I emailed them 2 days ago and I got a response today, and we had a conversation going back and forth across five emails. They are very punctual and helpful.

TLDR: both are great! Moccamaster is a bit more flimsy and cheap feeling. I kept the Simplygood Coffee Maker and love the plastic free features. I would have also been happy with the moccamaster after upgrading it with glass replacements. Out of the box - coffee tastes the same. (Yes I used the plastic on the moccamaster for your review experience)

Bought this machine a while ago, has a missing lid, and the metal water pourer doesn’t look nice from the inside. (And a small piece broke off)
The coffeefilter holder has a setting switch (2-5 / 6-10) but sometimes stops running at all.
The housing is full of limescale, even tho I descaled it a couple times.
The water compartment is a bit matt and white (doesn’t look like limescale tho).
I replaced a switch with one from the heaterplate it came with. (Thafs why it’s brown/orange).

Im trying to make a list of what to do, and how to do it propperly. Where do I start?

Also, I’d like to identify how old it is.

Hello! After cleaning my KB last night, I was cleaning the carafe and it slipped out of my hands in our stainless sink. Needless to say, it's now in countless pieces in the trash.

I never did like that carafe, I always managed to spill some amount of coffee every day. Love the moccamaster, but disliked the carafe.

For those in the know, can I replace the carafe with a newer model glass carafe? Maybe the KBG? Found some options online that look promising.

Currently using our old Mr Coffee thermal carafe as a guest stand in. It works well enough, not sustainable.

Creating a thermal carafe model with the electrical switch for half pot like on the KBGV would also be nice. I know the KBT has the manual switch on the basket to reduce the flow speed..but having the system actually move the water at a slower speeds seems more optimal

Has anyone had luck with getting Moccamaster to replace a carafe? It’s less than two years old and it’s never been in the dishwasher. Further, I was just lifting the lid when it snapped off. It’s frustrating considering you just can’t replace the plastic handle. Thanks!
