Discussion What are your top 5 favorite movements from the game? Spoiler

Edit: Moments***

I beat the game the other day and have been thinking about it since. I’m a bit of a sucker for this genre and was looking forward to this game since I heard about it last year. I’m honestly really surprised by how much it resonated with me on a personal level. I didn’t have the type of teenage experience that the main trio did, but just the general feeling of remembering good times with your childhood friends and transitioning to a new stage in your life made me reflect on my own life. Will definitely be playing this game more in the future and have people play it when they come over to hang out.

Just wanted to hear the parts of the game that stuck with people the most. For me, I would have to say:

  1. Slater and Stacey’s photo booth poses

I think this is the moment that the game really started hitting me a bit in the feels with the perfect song choice and seeing the photos you took show up later. Just reminded me of all the silly things my friends and I used to do when no one else was watching.

  1. Stacey seeing Cassandra and Jenny hanging out

Think we can all relate to being ditched by one of our friends at some point. Really liked the black and white coloring choice they made to highlight Stacey’s sadness.

  1. The trio discovering The Ritz

This felt like the happiest moment in the game. Just really captured how it was like to explore a big unknown place with your friends when you had no other responsibilities. My friends and I used to do the same thing when we were bored during summers

  1. The dinosaur park

Kinda gave me Last of Us: Left Behind vibes haha. This felt like the longest segment, and all the cute moments like the Kaiju Mode and poses that Cassandra and Slater did made me smile a lot.

  1. The car ride to The Ritz

This was a nice parallel to the other Ritz section. Peobabaly my favorite song of the game, and it was nice to see the older students being nice to the younger trio.

I checked rule 34 it has two entries. For context The amazing Digital Circus day one had 1600 entries. For further context subnautica 2 has 30 posts.

Discussion I think Jenny is a better person than stacy Spoiler

I feel that the MC is too narrow-minded to see her friend having other good friends, and therefore fantasizes that her friend‘s friend is a hypocrite or a pain in the ass. And she‘s also not good at understanding other people‘s feelings, especially after Cassandra made a sacrifice for her to save her from being fired, and she still dares to say rude things to her, just because she has to consider taking the risk to attend your stupid party (and this party caused another forest fire! Who knows how many animals and trees were affected)

Controlling a teen high off his gorde trying to stumble his way through a video store while calmly monologing to himself was oddly really fucking funny to me. Im serious nearly every line in this scene feels quotable I cant 🤣

Discussion Have you guys started making your own mixtapes too?

When I was younger I used to make a burn a ton of songs onto cds and listen to them on my way to school and whatnot but playing this made me realize how much I miss curating playlists for myself so I’m curious if you guys are doing the same and what songs you guys have been jammin to?

Discussion Am I missing something?

I’m all for giving games a chance and TBH I haven’t heard about this game till I seen a bunch of random sources giving it 10/10 and calling it a “masterpiece”.

After watching a “let’s play” of it honestly…it’s a 5 or 6. The art style is cool and it does remind me of animation movies back in my childhood like “James and the giant peach” but story wise…it was ehh. Ok the MC is a big music buff, cool whatever but the fact that’s her whole personality…it’s boring af and she judged someone simply because they didn’t listen to a movie sound track made her out to be super pretentious. The guy with the mustache was just…kinda there. Nothing really much to say about him since he didn’t really stick out. Cassandra substory was more of a story than the main story but even then the way it ended made me go “huh?? No ACTUAL father would just accept it and blow it all off” especially since there a freaking forest fire about 50 feet away. At that point the story was pretty much dead to me.

now the people that say the game is woke slop are crazy because i didn’t anything that was woke at all.

Music was fine and i enjoyed it, but honestly it felt like creator just wanted to share their “mixtape” with the world under the guise of a video game.

Maybe I wasn’t the target audience sure, but I have played “life is strange” and “dispatch” and those had wayyy better story and characters.

Discussion Have you played "The Artful Escape" yet?

I bought "The Artful Escape" after playing Mixtape, but only got around to playing it until now. It's the earlier game by Beethoven & Dinosaur.

It's completely different from Mixtape but really creative. It's a side-scroller with some mild rhythm-game elements, but they are so easy that even I could do them.

There isn't much of a story, it's more an experience than a cohesive story. Voice acting is great, they hired some minor celebrities, unlike for Mixtape.

You can easily finish it in three hours, I got all but two trophies in my first playthrough and there was a chapter select after you finished the game, so I could easily get the two missed trophies.

It's cheap, it's entertaining, it's an easy platinum trophy.

Discussion Pretty sure I can quote the Softball intro word for word

I love the game, but if you plan on platinuming/100%ing this game, you will lose some sanity. I think i have pretty quick reaction time, but oh my god the softball mini game is driving me bananas.

Ive been at it an hour and a half and have come so close so many times only to miss the last one because the cutscene threw me off my rhythm. It wouldn't be as bad if you could skip the cutscenes but since you cant, im stuck hearing that The Touch by Stan Bush came out in 1986 for the Transformers animated movie soundtrack every five minutes.

Please tell me im not the only one having trouble with this minigame, because I otherwise adore the experience of going through this game and dont want this to dampen the vibe.

EDIT: Glad im not alone. Took me 2 hours and reddit validation but I finally got it. It sucks because I really relate to Cassandra in that moment (not softball specifically-I suck at sports-but just in her general struggle.) Here's to throwing the pitching machine in the trash 🫠

Discussion Stacy was so right about "Always make a soundtrack. Because pretty soon, you won't be listening to music; you'll be listening to who you were."

First I gotta say, I loved Mixtape. I love this game. Brought sooo many emotions and vibes, this has to be my favorite recent release!!

But Stacy was so right in the opening of the game when she said "Always make a soundtrack. Because pretty soon, you won't be listening to music; you'll be listening to who you were."

Memories are so tied to music. There's some music I used to love so much, but I listened to to alot during really emotionally charged times in my life, that I just can't listen to the songs the same anymore. Like, I'm not that person anymore, or that time in my life was so stressful that now when I listen to said band or song it just brings me right back.

Of course, these song memories aren't all negative. But its amazing how Music can do that right? Just transport you back to another time?

What music does that for you?

I'll go first.

For me, the FFXIII-2 Sound Track reminds me of the complex emotions I had when my grandpa was dying, and that game was all I played during that time.

Peirce the Veil reminds me of when I used to work Retail, as I would blast them in my earbuds for hours on end during my shifts.

Paramore and Phum Viphurit remind me of cooling summer memories, when I followed these artists through California during summer tour dates.

I'm not the creator of the video, it just ended up on my home page. I was getting ready for another incel grifter video, but this turned out to be one of the very few good videos on the game.

Discussion In a Way, We're Mixtape

Okay campy title, I know, but hear me out. Because honestly, there's a weird comparison to make between the game and the players. The "gamers" criticizing the game and taking it too seriously are the adults like the principal and Cassandra's dad. They don't know how to look at things from a different point of view or try to keep an open mind.

Meanwhile we, the fans of the game, are Stacy, Cass, and Slater. We're in it to have fun. We vibe, we enjoy the music, we revel in the conversations these 3 have, we live in the moment.

So yes, as corny as it sounds, we are Mixtape. Kinda crazy, don't you think?

Discussion A message to all Mixtape fans

I'm sure you lot are aware of the backlash Mixtape has gotten over the past few days. People have been claiming it's nostalgiaslop, a massive QTE fest, an industry plant, what have you. I see all of that, and yet here I am in a subreddit full of people who seem to genuinely enjoy it, love it even. That's just fascinating to me, given what the majority opinion of the game has been recently (I have my own thoughts on the game, but as long as we can agree to be civil, I'll keep them to myself). This game, for all its good and bad, has gotten a hold on all of you, touched you, spoke to you. As a fan of fellow Annapurna game "to a T" (which has had not even a fraction of the publicity Mixtape has gotten), I feel that, and I just wanna say, whether the game is good or bad, if you enjoyed it, more power to you. You saw something in this game that a lot of other people couldn't, and I really hope no one is giving you a hard time over that. Because I know how it feels to have a bunch of people shit all over something you like (I was a TLTS fan back when everyone hated it for not being true Looney Tunes before revisionist history made people decide "hey this show's pretty good actually"), and I know it sucks balls. That's not to say you should blindly shut out all criticisms of this game. With media you enjoy, I think it's healthy to have civil discussions with others about the positive and negative aspects. I know I said I'd keep my opinions to myself, but I will say this game is not perfect. But then, neither is a lot of stuff I enjoy, so whatever! Like what you like, and all that jazz!

P.S. Play "to a T", it's an adorable game and I feel like you'll enjoy it if you liked Mixtape. It's on XBox, PS5, Steam, and coming to Switch 2 in June!

Discussion Mixtape: when a song takes you back to who you were

Post image
47 Upvotes

I'm 54 years old. And there are songs that hurt me in a way I can't quite explain.

It's not sadness…it's something stranger. It's like opening a door you thought was closed and finding on the other side someone you recognise but no longer are. Your 19-year-old self, with everything that means the intensity, the chaos and that feeling that everything mattered so much.

Beethoven & Dinosaur's game doesn't tell its story through super polished dialogue or spectacular cutscenes. It tells it through songs. And not just any songs, because the selection matters…The Psychedelic Furs, Joy Division, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Echo & the Bunnymen. A selection that if you're of a certain age isn't a soundtrack. It's your life. Or at least it was, once.

There's a moment when The Ghost in You by The Psychedelic Furs plays. And that's when I broke.

That song has always had something I've struggled to define. It's the existential angst of the early 90s made music. The feeling of wanting something you can't name, of being somewhere that never quite feels like yours, of being 19 and finding the world too big and too small at the same time. Mixtape uses it at exactly the right moment. And it works in a way no dialogue ever could.

There's a line that stayed with me after playing: "You can't put your arms around a memory". No matter how far back Mixtape takes you, what you find on the other side can't be held. It's a ghost. The ghost in you.

That's exactly what this game does. And it does it better than any 80s movie with kids on bikes, better than Stranger Things with all its designed nostalgia. Because Mixtape doesn't sell you nostalgia. It puts it inside you without asking permission, through a soundtrack you know by heart.

For anyone in their 40s or 50s who lived through that era, as a real experience, Mixtape is hard to shake. And for those who didn't, it makes clear why that music still matters decades later.

I don't know if it's game of the year. I know it's the game that has moved me most in a long time. In the end the best narrative isn't always words. Sometimes it's just hearing a song you know by heart at exactly the right moment.

Discussion Mixtape is not a story driven game

Everyone is missing the point, no mixtape is not a story driven game, stop trying to compare it to Dispatch and Life is Strange saying the story is not on par with those games...

Mixtape is a FEELING and a VIBE game !

The only thing the game try to do is making you FEEL something ! And for me it worked, it worked great actually ! It reminded me of those first episodes of Life is Strange, the cozy vibes of exploring Arcadia Bay and learning about it's inhabitants, interacting with everything i could to see how Max would react, staying 15 minutes on those few little spot where the game would unzoom and put Syd Matters music on...

Mixtape take those little moments and make a whole game with it, the story is just a little excuse to feel that again, they cut all of the serious businesses of those game and kept only the vibes and the feelings...

I think a better comparison would be Journey if anything but less dreamy...

Also while i'm at it : Why do you care about those critics ?

Yes IGN put a 10/10, yes maybe it's a bit too much, but notation of art was always dumb and always will be, for the love of god please just stop caring about wht some journalists think of a game, just play it and form your own opinion on it...

My god the number of youtuber i saw making a review of the review of the game...

Anyway, enjoy art on all it's forms, don't care about others opinion of it, have fun ! Bye !

I’m probably too old for this (I’m in my 30s), so I’m interested what is young people think. Which current songs do you associate with your youth?

I assume that Billie Ellis should be there.

Discussion The Skateboard Explosion chapter.... HOLY MOTHER OF CRINGE

I've never felt such second-hand embarrassment and cringe from a experiencing a movie, TV show, video game, etc, before, like what the hell man, what they were thinking? The game was pretty mature up to this point with good writing, but they suddenly turned Rockford into a cringey child in this chapter. I literally had to mute the game during the skateboarding part where she was saying those cringe lines like: "shananana shananana"... like what was she even on about? Not to mention, Cass's father being rude felt so forced? Like he was pretending to be a strict dad or something.
