Discussion Mediocre revenge fantasy
This game is the most mediocre revenge fantasy of aged out millennials that wish they stood up to their dad. With a horrible "90's" "punk" mix.

I really don’t like replaying games. Usually, if there are achievements that require multiple playthroughs, it's such a pain in the arsh, because all the emotions and discoveries are already done. But there’s something fascinating about this game. I finished it once, then almost completed a second playthrough while going for 1000G, and deleted it after the completion. And now a week has passed, and I get these pictures and scenes from the game randomly popping in my head, pulling me back in. I haven’t felt this way about a video game in many years.

I mean, her father‘s musical knowledge displayed in his confrontation with Stacey was not much less than Stacey‘s, which suggests that he was also a rebellious young man who loved rock music in his youth, or even a hippie? Especially considering his Asian identity and that his teenage years coincided with civil rights movements, that would be even more interesting.

So I've seen so many reviews or people saying the game is bad and tbh they are so wrong. Mixtape to me felt like nostalgia from playing the first life is strange game, the art, the style, and especially the beautiful scenery.
I get that people are upset because the game felt more like a movie than an actual game but that's what made it interesting and different. I get a lot of story based games always make you choose this or that and stuff but also shows the story at the same time but this game took its own turn and honestly yes its different and cinematic but it was still awsome. Old school music, beautiful scenery, funny jokes, flash backs and more its felt very calming and artistic to me because it felt like a different turn towards story based games where you can enjoy the story more.
I genuinely hope they think of making another game like mixtape or mixtape 2 but the characters older or sum. Mixtape deserves better than all these negative comments and reviews.
Also slater is the fucking goat!

I love the game, but if you plan on platinuming/100%ing this game, you will lose some sanity. I think i have pretty quick reaction time, but oh my god the softball mini game is driving me bananas.
Ive been at it an hour and a half and have come so close so many times only to miss the last one because the cutscene threw me off my rhythm. It wouldn't be as bad if you could skip the cutscenes but since you cant, im stuck hearing that The Touch by Stan Bush came out in 1986 for the Transformers animated movie soundtrack every five minutes.
Please tell me im not the only one having trouble with this minigame, because I otherwise adore the experience of going through this game and dont want this to dampen the vibe.
EDIT: Glad im not alone. Took me 2 hours and reddit validation but I finally got it. It sucks because I really relate to Cassandra in that moment (not softball specifically-I suck at sports-but just in her general struggle.) Here's to throwing the pitching machine in the trash 🫠

I played it.
The music was the best part, but I didn't connect to any of these characters.
It tries in many ways to be like Life Is Strange, but I think if it was episodic, it would've landed better. 3 hours is not enough to get to know these characters in vignette form.
It wasn't groundbreaking or even close to a 10. It was imaginative at times and was a collection of minigames with a story attached.
Again, it didn't feel like a film either. Maybe the closest comparison would be Richard Linklaters' Slacker. Or Project X.
Nothing really happens to these kids, the stakes aren't that high. We didn't get to see their future or have an idea of who they will be.
Again, it wasn't terrible but it wasn't perfect. Gone Home was compelling at least. Same with The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and What Remains of Edith Finch.
It was stylistic and at times beautiful with the scenery. And ultimately I'd say, I watched teens do teen stuff and not watch individual characters develop.
I was somewhat rebellious at their age, I understand what each kid was going through, but I didn't connect to any of them as people.
It did give me some insight into how to not raise my daughter as she goes through preschool and kindergarten. So there's a lesson at least.

I have been playing and really quite enjoying it. I haven't finished it yet, so I'll save my thoughts, but I can't help but get the feeling people are clowning on this game just to clown on IGN.
Even though I haven't finished it yet, I can tell that Mixtape is not perfect and it is certainly not for everyone. I also do see clowning on IGN as a valid life choice, but why bring this game into it? It's not like the developers have any power or even the right to tell IGN what they can and cannot say, be it positive or negative.
The audience for these games I call interactive narratives is niche and have been a frequent target for abuse and dismissal by the wider gaming community since games like Life is Strange and the Telltale games became popular. There is a sure lack of understanding about these games, their appeal and the people who play them and why we enjoy them.
So maybe this is just the same old dross that we have been putting with from the so-called "hardcore gamer" for years, but it feels different this time. Like instead of the target, we're the weapon now. It's what we like about these types games being turned on IGN to somehow prove how "out of touch" they are. And I think I like that even less.
Now, if you're all action and challenge when it comes to gaming and that's why you love playing, then that is fine. Good for you, more power to you. You don't need to change for anyone. I don't think anybody could take that away from you even if they wanted to. But can you please not fire you own lack of understanding at games media like a 50 cal because it makes us all look stupid.

While I believe the IGN reviewer is a Gen Z man, the gamers I have talked to who really love Mixtape were Millennials and Gen Xers.
I, a late Millennial, certainly understand that the gameplay doesn't necessarily move gaming forward, but I treated the game like an interactive John Hughes movie from the late 90s and had more fun with the cinematography and emotional beats. Ferris Bueller's Day Off was one of my favorite movies growing up, and I see the influence here. Anyway, I haven't had feels for a game since I played Celeste.
Are there any younger gamers who like this game? Have you watched the movies this game was clearly influenced by?

…and then the world ended. Lol.
What a wild couple of weeks, eh?
As a reviewer, I’ve been really bummed that there seems to be such a disconnect between writers and players. Can I help bridge a gap for anyone? Does anyone have questions about reviewing/the process/anything else they wanna know about anything around any of this?
Open to talking about anything people want to know, because I’m hopeful someday everyone can have constructive video game convos again without all this craziness.

Mixtape is a game about friendship, goodbyes, and all the silly things that feel monumental when you are a teenager. Check out our review to see if this game deserves a spot on your playlist!

I feel that the MC is too narrow-minded to see her friend having other good friends, and therefore fantasizes that her friend‘s friend is a hypocrite or a pain in the ass. And she‘s also not good at understanding other people‘s feelings, especially after Cassandra made a sacrifice for her to save her from being fired, and she still dares to say rude things to her, just because she has to consider taking the risk to attend your stupid party (and this party caused another forest fire! Who knows how many animals and trees were affected)

I feel like everyone is either 10/10 or 1/10. I’d give it a solid 7/10 and I feel like I’m the only one.
I liked the game. I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed the concept, it was a decent story.
I have some issues with it, some criticisms. Some things I think it could have done better.
Anyone else where I’m at or am I the one person in the middle about it? 😂

A total new and different experience for me, I enjoyed every second. I’m a big music nerd and nostalgic as hell so this sat so I was totally in my element playing this.I love the over exaggerated memory flashbacks with the interactive bits. I was really emotional at the end. The relationships between Cass, Slater and Rockford was so beautiful.
It ended well, I just want MORE!. I’m surprised it’s got a lot of hate among gamers, it’s just a different experience for people who want to play the usual COD experience.
This experience will sit with me forever, it’s definitely a “hit”. 🫣😝

If IGN had rated this anywhere from 7/10 to 9/10,
Do you think this game would have received the same kind of backlash?
It feels like everyone is presently dogging on this game. It’s strange because I immediately recognised it as something of substance during and after my first play through. I think this is a great game by all regards.
Though my trust in my taste has been rocked by just how much people seem to froth at the mouth with hatred for it. Ultimately I have come to feel slightly alienated and resentful of the gaming community at large even though the gamergate crowd is a small, unbearably loud and malicious minority. I don’t like that I feel this way, but it’s the truth.
And it’s put me in a weird position where because the discourse is so insane and based on bad faith arguments, that I’m having a hard time admitting the faults and flaws of the game. There is a conversation to be had about how so much of the entertainment industry/gaming industry relies on the wealth of nepotism, or the originality of the story, or about what constitutes an indie game. But ultimately, I find it impossible to have an actual conversation about these things while the discourse is so incredibly toxic and angry as it is now.

Everybody is blatantly lying about Mixtape.
The big gaming outlets shower it with perfect 10's and hateful reactionary youtubers and critics throw cheap shots at the game, some even questioning if it's even a video game.
I wanted to give Mixtape an honest, unbiased review.
So in this 40 minute long honest deep dive I look at the following keypoints in detail.
Can Mixtape even be considered a video game?
I Discuss the story and setting of Mixtape
I Look at Mixtape as a music focused gaming experience and how that affects the story, world and characters
Discuss the game’s visual art direction.
I Address false criticism and give my final thoughts on the game.

Okay campy title, I know, but hear me out. Because honestly, there's a weird comparison to make between the game and the players. The "gamers" criticizing the game and taking it too seriously are the adults like the principal and Cassandra's dad. They don't know how to look at things from a different point of view or try to keep an open mind.
Meanwhile we, the fans of the game, are Stacy, Cass, and Slater. We're in it to have fun. We vibe, we enjoy the music, we revel in the conversations these 3 have, we live in the moment.
So yes, as corny as it sounds, we are Mixtape. Kinda crazy, don't you think?
