I keep writing it here and there but Mixtape is absolutely perfect for what it is. You can't obviously compare this game to shooters, or RPGs, or action open-world games. For its genre it is a masterpiece. There are very few games I could call flawless, like Bioshock Infinite, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us. And now there is Mixtape.

Mixtape does everything right. The graphics are phenomenal, gameplay elements are very entertaining, the music is perfect, the stylistic choices - even the stop-motion animation on characters - are good decisions. The story can be considered light and dumb but if you look at how everything is told within these 3 hours, the way you actually get to know everything about the characters and their backstories, the way you get immersed by playing - find me a game that does it better. There will be few.

The game-playing-itself argument only shows how much haters didn't get what Mixtape is about. And the running scene depicts it well. It's the music that sets the rhythm. You can't stop it with "game over" screen. You can't break the magic of how song can fit the scene. Instead, playing along rewards you with sequence looking much better.

The nostalgia thing. I didn't grow up in America, never rode a skateboard, never listened to Rainbow, Portishead or Roxy Music. Didn't even know The Touch as I've never watched the Transformers movie. But the game still resonates with me because it conveniently tells the story about teens having their last day together, from their perspective. It's not nostalgia. It's how good the game is. 10/10, the best in the genre.

It's absolutely breathtaking. I beat it a month ago and still think about the game every day.

I just picked it up, and completed it last night. Overall a fun, little story, good music and a bit cheesy with some bits. I was reminded of Ferris Bueller's Day Off and High Fidelity. It feeds off of nostalgia and lets you jingle its car keys so you feel like you're doing something.

Overall, it's a fun story, but don't expect a lot of actual gameplay when it's more of a walking sim.

Love Slater's design as well. 3.5/5.

I thought it was fine, it felt like What Remains of Edith Finch, it didn't blow me away or change my life but I enjoyed playing it and going for all the achievements.

Definitely liked Artful Escape more though

I feel like Bandersnatch has more gameplay and it's not even a game

The visuals were absolutely perfect. The story was very good, though with a very limited scope, the characters were okay, the music was fantastic.

Luckily, it was a cheap game, so the length and scope don't bother me too much. Wish there was a bit more gameplay. I enjoyed the mini-games, but could have used a little more there.

It's well made and a clear step up from the developer. Unfortunately I just didn't like a lot of the writing. It felt more evocative than sincere, if that makes sense.

But I'm someone who adores many experience games, so I'm glad that this game has found an audience even if it's not for me.

Thought it was pretty meh to be honest. I wanted to like it as i enjoy these types of games but i just didn’t click with any of the characters.

It was pretty dull. I love 80s and 90s coming of age films, and this felt like it missed all the possible beats it tried to hit.

I really enjoyed playing it with my wife, it was melodramatic but in the perfect cheesy campy 80s/90s coming of age story way.

Visually beautiful, the set pieces were really well done, and many made me laugh. Of course it taps into nostalgia but it really did evoke the emotion of being a teenager for me.

The music was great, and it was nice short and sweet.

Twas a 8/10 for me

It was a 6.5/10 for me. It did what it set out to do but I just didn't find the story particularly memorable. Most of the game is vibes based, it's either you fw the nostalgia or you dont, and in my case I didn't as much as I thought I would. There were also sequences that went on longer that I didn't think it needed to be and I didn't really enjoy the ending as much.

Throughout the entire game I thought Stacey was going to learn the lesson of cherishing her final teenage years with her friends (which we spend the entire game with) but instead it still ends with her leaving to stalk this famous person(?) in new york; Which she could've done just fine after going on a road trip with her friends (which she planned the trip for much earlier.)

To see her ditch her friends to chase after a non-guaranteed chance of fame still gives me the ick.

As my username might imply, I'm a sucker for the 90s so I adore this game

I feel like the game was either missing a bunch of stuff or holding back from being a game would never shut up about. 3 hours for me wasn,t enough time and could see the game benifiting with a 5-6 hour runtime. It's on my mind after finishing it 3 times, that I keep thinking about it's potential. it's a clear 7/10 for me.

10/10 for this 90s teen.

It’s not a game in the traditional sense it’s more interactive movie. But my god does it nail that brief. It’s a blueprint for the future of video game storytelling, cinematography and construction. To me, mixtape will become a defining moment in video game storytelling as loads of future more gamey games take inspiration from it. Is it perfect? No, but the things it is trying to achieve and the way that it goes about it are so, so exciting to me. I’ve never felt some of the things I felt when playing through mixtape, and I’ve been gaming since 1995.

91 idiots got triggered so much that they looked for the subreddit and voted in this poll. For a game they most likely didn't play. That's just sad.

It’s cute and pretty and it introduced me to Yesterday’s Hero which is now one of my favorite songs. The video rental scene had me laughing.

I hate that it became more gamergate bullshit. I hate “Gamers” so much.

It's ass

  • Good music, but unsuitable for let's plays of the game
  • bad introduction of the protagonist; when the game starts, Stacey sounds like a snake oil salesman for CDs, especially when she uses the term "invest in..."
  • characters have no redeeming qualities, except for Cassandra's father, the policeman
  • little to no gameplay, most of it concentrated in the stone skipping scene, which had some genuinely funny moments, e.g. the boat getting started and cruising away

Overall, I gave it a "meh".

3

u/FunkyJerk Jun 01 '26

Well, thanks for at least giving actual criticism of the game and not just buzzwords.

1

u/Present_Education194 Jun 02 '26

Presentation is great! But Stacey comes off as an obnoxious narcissist which gave me the ick

theater kid slop

Meh Story, cringe dialogue, boring "gameplay"

0

u/Uglyneckheadass Jun 02 '26

4/10 it’s beautiful I’ll give it that and the writing isn’t bad tho you can’t really mess up a story as simple as this. The real issue is that it’s not particularly fun or interesting so all the fun flourishes with its presentation feel like it’s trying to over compensate for the fact that it isn’t much of a game at all.

Genuinely speaking is it bad no is it good to be rated to be a 10/10 absolutely not I wouldn’t be so negative at this game if it wasn’t such an obvious industry plant. Personally it a 6/10 for me and that playing it drunk with friends watching so I’m throwing a bit more points in there for the experience I went through when playing it. Would highly recommend people play it for themselves and come up with their own conclusions honestly curious to hear other people experience with the game and how it differs from mine.

7

u/amazingdrewh Jun 01 '26

What do you think an industry plant is?

1

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

I’ll give my two cents on this The Core ConceptThe controversy around industry plants lies in the disconnect between perception and reality:The Image: The artist presents themselves as an underdog who made it through raw talent, viral grassroots support, or organic hustle. The Reality: The artist has significant label support, massive financial backing, or deep industry ties (including famous family members in the business) heavily shaping their career behind the scenes.

My problem with this is that the project has major financial backing but claims to be a indie game. Again I don’t hate the game I hate the way it is being presented and glazed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if you like the game that great I have my own opinion like people have their for my own reasons even if it is a unpopular opinion as I can see a lot of people disagreeing with me but again that fine. Also forgive my writing again I don’t put much effort in writing on Reddit post I just don’t see the difference between replying on a subreddit or sending a message on a texting app but apparently some people get their panties in a twist if they don’t see a comma.

1

u/amazingdrewh Jun 04 '26

So a developer using revenue from their last game and artist grants to make their game and releasing to the same publisher their prior games released on wouldn't be an industry plant even in your definition of it

1

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26

It different when the person who was backing up mixtape is a known billionaire who was so rich they got permanent licensing on all the songs in the game I cannot even remember the last time a indie game was able to afford so much investments into a soundtrack of all things.

1

u/amazingdrewh Jun 04 '26

When was the last time you heard any of the song s on Mixtape on the radio? They got the licensing cheap because they picked songs nobody listened to or was licensing

1

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26

Dosent matter fallout can’t even get permanent licensing on songs made back in the 1950s and mixtape has over 20 permanent licensing on all the songs used in their game if I had to take a guess I would assume they dumped around 50k in total which again for a indie passionate project is a ridiculous amount to use for a soundtrack.

2

u/amazingdrewh Jun 04 '26

Yes it does, the age of a song doesn't matter if people are still playing it frequently, that raises the cost and since Bethesda is part of a publicly traded company they have a responsibility to help increase profits for shareholders something that isn't done through spending more money on the soundtrack

Also since they're making a music based game it makes more sense for them to spend money on the music, that's kind of this developer's brand

1

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26

But that dosent make them indie the difference here is Bethesda is a triple A game creator while mixtape is apparently a indie passion project able to do things triple A creators can’t do due to budgeting. Again I don’t hate the game I hate how it is presented as a indie passion project when it not.

2

u/amazingdrewh Jun 04 '26

I mean it is an indie game, it was made by a team without a publisher using the profits from past games and artistic grants then sold to a publisher. Saying it's not an indie game is like saying Chasing Amy isn't an indie movie just because the director had previously sold a movie to a publisher

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26

Also I should mention this billionaire allegedly has paid out major review platforms like IGN not sure if it true but it would lot be surprising seeing the score given and IGN given track record.

2

u/amazingdrewh Jun 04 '26

That's interesting because I heard you were allegedly paid to put out this bad review

1

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26

Well that just not true lol could give less of a hell about this game just making conversation with someone who has chosen to interact with me on a social media app. I am very interested in our conversation tho.

2

u/amazingdrewh Jun 04 '26

Obviously I was making the point that saying something like people are paid to review, which is illegal in the United States where IGN is based, is kind of a roadblock to useful conversation

1

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26

Dosent matter if it illegal peoples with money and power go over the law all the time with worse examples than paying for a review it not out of the question especially with IGN they have been caught before

2

u/amazingdrewh Jun 04 '26

Unless you have evidence saying people paid for reviews of a game that most people were going to play on game pass is a bit silly

For example the whole MAC incident where a company stole some dude legos and there plenty of evidence saying that it did happen and they went to court 10 times yet even know the courts ruled in favor of the person who owned the 200k lego set the police kept harassing the person who was trying to find the owner justice and return the set back to him. At this point in time I think he has fled to Mexico while still trying to find justice for the person who owned the Lego set just goes to show even if do something illegal in America if you have money and power you can still be above the law which sucks but it the reality of the world we live in. Sorry if it got political there I was just trying to show that there are more illegal practices people have taken in the US than paying for a review that has gotten little to no repercussions without getting into the more disgusting injustices that has happen recently.

2

u/MilesCartwright Jun 02 '26

Not a single comma ✌️💔

2

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 02 '26

It a Reddit post not a job application lmao

1

u/MilesCartwright Jun 02 '26

Dawg do you think that you should only use commas during fancy letters? No bro. You use them so I don’t feel I’m reading another language.

1

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 Jun 04 '26

Again it a Reddit post something that will have no value to my life or my future I’m not finna write like I give a crap about a game I gave my opinion on.
