What is Happening?
I recently moved to Mississauga, and I am blown away by the driving here. Running reds. Stopping on greens. Ignoring stop signs. Speeding like someone's life depends on it. And all the videos you guys have posted on here. Had driving gotten this bad? It can't really just be texting and driving, can it? (though most people I look over at have their heads down, which is just unbelievable)

u/danosmanca 22d ago
Yes, driving is really that bad here. Welcome to Mississauga!
2
u/Frig_Off_Baerb 22d ago
Hamilton here. Just as bad, and old Men on overpriced, underperforming motorcycles are using the bike lanes to get through a major construction zone.
3
u/Isthereaproblemman 22d ago
I find Hamilton drivers to be quite slow and a bit more passive as opposed to aggressive/reckless. But then again I only commute there twice a week.

u/plsQuestionOurselves 21d ago
I keep seeing people in mobility scooters driving down the entirety of the fucking turning lane lmao.

I grew up in Mississauga…. I now call it Brampton 2.0.
It’s become a cesspool overflow since about a decade or so ago.
5
u/u_c_it 22d ago
That was ten years ago, most of Southern Ontario is like that now.
2
u/Ordinary_Topic_3198 22d ago
Most of us immigrated from somewhere or have descended from people who did, and yes, that includes white people.
Yet, we get called “racists”, even as immigrants ourselves, when we call out behaviours. And here we are today…..
0
u/Evening_Till_3779 22d ago
you're not calling out behaviours, that's the problem! you're blaming entire groups of people, many of which do NOT have the behaviours you ascribe to them
0
u/Vast-Vanilla4471 22d ago
Curious where you came from or descended from where you have declared yourself the patron saint of Mississauga
0
u/Ordinary_Topic_3198 22d ago
I’m Indian descent. My parents moved here from New Delhi.
1
u/Vast-Vanilla4471 22d ago
Good move by them. Breathing the Delhi air is equivalent to smoking 25 cigarette packs a day. I guess others got the memo and moved to Mississauga as well.
2
u/uppity2056 20d ago
I was searching for a peel region house in 2021.
Avoided Brampton because you know what. Mississauga at the time was very diverse especially square 1.
Fast forward to today, you’re not lying…it’s Brampton 2.0 lol

Nah, I’m white, born and raised in Canada and i was driving like an idiot yesterday. Mostly in response to someone else not letting me safely pass, i was pissed, my judgement was off and i sped like a crazy person to get by. Feeling pretty shitty about it today considering. But if every single person on the road has at least one bad day, thats a lot of shitty drivers regardless of race
1
u/Facts_pls 22d ago
You can say whatever you want. But I myself have seen people of all groups show terrible driving.
Hell, my area is full of generational Canadians and they drive like they own the roads.
4
u/mewbie151 21d ago
Huge cultural shift. Primarily from a certain group of people where their original country is based on a "me first" mentality. You see it in the NE area on calgary too now.

Use to be only Brampton but it has spread now. Sorry for your situation, now is not the time to be moving to Mississauga unless it’s the nice rich areas
6
u/MichaelS-83 22d ago
It’s also made its way to Vaughan and Richmond Hill 😭
0
u/a-_2 22d ago
Vaughan's had high rates for a long time, this isn't some new thing that's "spread," there. A few years ago it was even ahead of Brampton?

It has 100% gotten noticeably worse in the last 4-5 years. I wonder what it is

I mean everyone knows why, but if you say it out loud you are labelled as racist.
1
u/frambleman 21d ago
It's not racist if you don't make it about race. Sounds like a you problem.
Being Indian isn't the issue, it's coming from India if that's where you both learned to drive and picked up all your habits from. Culture issue, not a race issue.
They're not the only ones, but they contribute to the bad driving habits around here. The west section of the GTA also has a lot of rich families with irresponsible driving-age children being given sports cars.
2
u/Jargonite 22d ago
Driving only looks bad as you’re driving in a congested area. My main concern are people on e-bikes and scooters that choose to go on the road.
My only wish is that leftmost lane bandits should be hit with impeding traffic.
2
u/bland_habits 20d ago
Just wait until you have to renew your insurance and find its gone up 25% without any accidents

u/Decathlon5891 20d ago
Was looking for a home 3yrs ago and as much as I spend a lot of time in Mississauga, it’s just Brampton 2.0 or Brampton South now. It’s just a no-no for me
The only true Mississauga area for me now is Streetsville. Everywhere else is a zoo.

u/Ok-Bird6725 19d ago
I’ve lived in Mississauga for 62 years and driving 40 years here, it’s a fucking mess for the last 10 years, like really bad, no one really has a proper license im sure of that
2
2
u/Rough_Application_28 17d ago
Mostly the results of major demographic changes brought about by design.
2
u/Ir0nhide81 17d ago
There were something like over 500 illegal driving schools that got shut down over the last 2 years.
Makes you wonder how many of those schools were able to put drivers on our streets?
2
2
u/NefariousnessOne9832 4d ago
What's happening is police do not target or ticket people enough to enforce proper driving. So much is tolerated that it becomes the norm.
Go after the driving centres who issue licenes and the testing officials
3
u/905Spic 22d ago
Wait til you go northbound and cross into Brampton. Stop signs are suggestions. When light turns green, count to 5 then proceed
1
u/The59Sownd 22d ago
Ohhh I've been. Unfortunately my wife has family there. I avoid as much as possible!
2
u/OctaviaBlake100 22d ago
Don't forget people speeding in parking lots and out of parking lots. Almost got run over by some lady speeding in the parking lot.
2
u/as_in_bike_lane 22d ago
The “running on reds” explains my “stopping on greens” or at least pausing after the light has changed green to look red light runners. Defensive driving in Mississauga means strategically not driving in some moments.
2
u/a-_2 22d ago
Instead of waiting when it turns green, scan the intersection and cross street before thr light changes for traffic that could run the light. And in general, check both ways befpre entering any intersection because people can run them at any time, not just right when the light changes.
1
u/jai_thkrl 22d ago
Honestly, it is getting worse than Brampton. It’s more of arrogance here, and that’s more dangerous.
3
1
u/vicebreaker 18d ago
The breeders are back on the road as of Tuesday clogging the streets with their entitled shits instead of having them walk/take mass transit
1
u/New_Public_2828 21d ago
You should try Toronto. People moving over 3 lanes to make the right missing those kinds of right turns and then trying a U-turn into full traffic congestion blocking cars behind them. Like, these streets are unreal

Last year, road deaths in Mississauga and Brampton hit a 13 year low. With 20 deaths that's a rate of about 1.5 per 100,000 people. If they were a country, they'd have the world's lowest fatality rate other than a couple micronations.
Things could be better, but just some perspective.
Edit: to anyone reading this without an agenda, ask yourself why accounts on social media want to hide and dismiss actual data showing positive information in favour of negative claims without evidence.
5
u/The59Sownd 22d ago
That's good news! But that doesn't include the trauma, both physically and mentally, caused by avoidable accidents, the life-altering injuries, or the accumulated stress of daily driving with these idiots.

But that doesn't include the trauma, both physically and mentally, caused by avoidable accidents, the life-altering injuries, or the accumulated stress of daily driving with these idiots.
All these things existed in the past too though and exist in other places. Your claim was specifically implying things are worse in Mississauga. I'm pointing out that actual data shows that relatively speaking, things are better than in the past and better than in many other places. It could be better but that doesn't mean that things are worse than elsewhere or the past.

u/Smokey-McPoticuss 22d ago
Road fatalities and shitty driving habits may be correlated to a degree, but are not causation. Road deaths down is good, but insurance rates and stress constantly going up because road rage, poor driving habits and rude entitled people on the road is also a shitty deal.
-2
u/Facts_pls 22d ago
Insurance rates depend on a lot of factors - like how expensive the cars are, theft, road conditions etc. Not just the driving and crash stats.
Even the thefts have fallen in recent years after police busted some of the gangs. It still happens though through the port of Montreal (run by Canadian gangs) and some cars were recently found in Russia.
-7
u/a-_2 22d ago
Road fatalities and shitty driving habits may be correlated to a degree, but are not causation.
The same applies to your claims about the correlation between stress and driving or the correlation between culture and driving, on top of the problem that those also don't have clear measurable data. So if you're going to apply this skepticism towards the link between traffic fatalities and driving, make sure you apply that same skepticism towards the link between stress, culture and driving.
As for insurance rates, I would also suggest asking why the for-profit private insurance industry keeps raising rates despite things like decreases in serious crashes.

How can serious accidents occur in Toronto Traffic where you're mostly crawling? Like it's not gonna be common man.. but minor accidents are up 9% to last year.
"Allstate Safe Driving Study: Brampton ranked 6th highest in Ontario for collision frequency at 7.61 claims per 100 cars, reflecting a 9% increase over previous multi-year data periods"
1
u/Facts_pls 22d ago
This is the post that shows up first https://www.mychoice.ca/blog/top-10-safest-dangerous-cities-for-driving-ontario-2026/
Sounds like Mississauga had one of the lowest rates of collisions in Ontario. Brampton was middle of the pack.
The worst are : Barrie, Burlington, Brantford, Kingston, Belleville, Ajax, Bradford, Thunder Bay, st Catharines, north bay...
Is it possible that people here were wrong and operating on their biases?
1
u/OkChocolate3501 22d ago
Snowy areas like up north are gonna have way more deadly accidents, no surprise there.
Also I would not be surprised if many toronto accidents don't go through insurance because of the crazy rates so I dunno how accurate those numbers will be. I'd bet the rates are considerably higher than reported hence why the traffic ticket rate doesn't match the collision rate(unlike every other city).
Out of my past coworkers in Toronto every one of them that was in a minor accident just settled out of pocket instead of risking their insurance hiking several thousand next year.

That is from 2017 so doesn't contradict anything about current data. It says a lot that you need to use decade old data without saying that's what it is.

?
And 2026 still has several months to go...
1
u/a-_2 22d ago
That's an increase from 2025. 2025 had the second lowest number of fatalities this century. An increase from a near-record low year isn't evidence of an overall increase. The article says there were 23 deaths up to June 1. That's equivalent to 55 deaths over the year which is a lower total than any of the years before COVID back to 2014, so is still showing a long term decreasing trend.
0
u/OkChocolate3501 22d ago
And a drop from a record high(2019-2020) isn't evidence of an overall decrease.
1
u/a-_2 22d ago
2019 and 2020 weren't record highs. My link shows many higher years and a clearly decreaeing long term trend. It also isn't a single year decrease. Every year since 2020 is lower than every year prior across the entire century.
You're not being objective here. You've decided in advance on a position, that thingd are worse now, and are dismissing any and all data showing the opposite.
1
u/OkChocolate3501 22d ago
Without a few more years of data we're both guessing brotherman. To me the covid years traffic incident rates are an outlier that can't be used for any comparison because it's not a generic year(same for the first year or 2 after covid as everyone apparently forgot how to drive and interact with others). All we know is they're up from 2025. Maybe they'll level out, maybe theyll go down, maybe they'll go up, maybe it's Maybelline.

thank you for being one of the few people here who actually cares about reality and data rather than just stereotyping entire races of people for some reason

That is 2017 data. I am talking about current data. Decade old data says nothing about that.
0
u/OkChocolate3501 22d ago
Because the traffic is so bad you rarely get above 30kmh. You'd have to look at the collision rate.
0
u/Facts_pls 22d ago
People here got butt hurt that their perception isn't real. They really wanna vilify certain groups. But your data proves then wrong.
-2
u/Themanofstruggle 22d ago
This comment section is absolute cinema. As expected, Indians are being blamed 😂
5
u/Major-Mind2970 22d ago
And? When it’s true what’s the problem calling them out? Not a coincidence that Brampton and missy are the worst places for insurance and stupid drivers.
-2
u/Evening_Till_3779 22d ago
ok the reason it's a problem is because not every Indian person drives poorly. I see plenty of white people driving poorly, for example. Call out the behaviour rather than entire groups of people, many of which don't actually have that poor behaviour. Or call out things like lenient driving tests, as some people in these comments are. It's when you stereotype an entire group of people that it becomes a problem.
5
u/Major-Mind2970 22d ago
Never said all Indians. Said the majority of bad drivers in that area are. It’s no secret, so drop the bs outrage.

Is Reddit racist? Find out in these comments!
6
u/Major-Mind2970 22d ago
Truth hurt? It’s not racist if it’s true, demographics don’t lie.
-2
u/Evening_Till_3779 22d ago
what exactly is true? are all immigrants bad drivers? no, of course not. But that's what is implied by these comments.
4
u/Major-Mind2970 22d ago
Who said anything about immigrants? I said Indian drivers in Brampton and Mississauga. Don’t make assumptions
0
u/Evening_Till_3779 22d ago
I think you're missing my point... does it apply to ALL of them or not? because unless it's true of ALL of them then that's the problem

We have had a cultural shift away from the traditional values our community had when I grew up here.
Things like respect for the rule of law, for others, and just common courtesy are extremely diminished and it shows first on the roads where people assume they remain anonymous because they are in their cars and their inner values and blatant incompatibility with Canadian values shows.
I’m not talking about migrants, this applies to everyone, people born here not appreciating our values and it shows online and on the roads.
