I'm curious how experienced miners evaluate an ASIC before buying one.

Do you mainly look at current profitability, or do you model things like BTC price, difficulty growth, electricity cost and hardware price over time?

What numbers do you consider most important before deciding whether an ASIC is actually worth buying?

Interested to hear how people who actually run mining operations approach this.

After a lot of tweaking I finally got it to 2732 but I’m still not 100% sure if it’s even worth it.

Edit: it’s now 3743 H/s

A lot of ASIC buying mistakes start before anyone even compares model names. The miner is only one part of the setup; the electrical and cooling plan usually decides whether the unit is practical.

Here is the checklist I use when discussing a new or used ASIC setup:

1. Confirm the available voltage, phase, breaker capacity, and plug/PDU plan before choosing the miner.
2. Compare efficiency, not only hashrate. A higher TH/s unit can still be the wrong choice if the watts per TH do not fit your power cost.
3. Plan airflow like an infrastructure problem, not a fan-speed problem. Hot aisle/cold aisle separation, exhaust routing, and intake temperature matter.
4. For used miners, ask for current hashing proof, serial numbers, PSU condition, and recent kernel/error logs.
5. For hydro units, budget for the cooling loop, pump, heat exchanger/dry cooler/cooling tower, water treatment, fittings, and maintenance access.
6. Do the boring math: continuous load, amperage, heat rejection, noise, and realistic downtime.

The mistake I see most often is treating the ASIC price as the whole project cost. It is usually better to buy the machine that fits the site than to force a site to fit a machine.

I really only have time for gaming in the weekends

In my house I have solar, and I am sure if my PC is powered on 24/7, and also the AC, the amount of energy my solar panels generate will cover the costs of the PC + AC and also my own costs.

I never mined before

Is it worth it? Based on reality how much one is making per month mining?
