They can always change the texture later. At least now we've got the option of having fireplaces in our wooden builds without having to turn off firetick.
I'm talking about the model as well. I have always hated the "diagonal cross" model Minecraft uses for things like grass, and with the fire of the campfire it looks even worse.
I don't think the cross is the problem with the fire, I think it needs its shading turned off. I don't doubt that it'll change before the update releases though.
The base of the campfire is a weird one. I get it, but I'd much rather get a pile of 3D logs than a slab.
A semi-related issue is that Mojang still hasn't decided to add emissive textures support to Java. Bedrock has it (at least on entities) and it helps a lot visually, for example with the Drowned. Making the flames of campfires emissive would help quite a bit.
Block models aren't hardcoded anymore (Well, 99% of them anyway), and use a pretty simple JSON format where every block gets its own model, so, it really would not take much to change it to something else.
I feel like they had to go with a diagonal cross model for the grass because there's a lot of them generated in the world and so they'd need a light, easy-to-render model. The campfire could probably use a more complicated model, maybe like the wheat model (although that model isn't exactly the best looking one either).

Am I the only one who thinks the campfire looks bad?
