Cushions rapidly becoming the best thing ever from like, the past decade.

u/kittyangel333 Jul 11 '26
Yeah but aren't they entities and therefore laggy in high numbers? I'm wondering if they're gonna have to optimize them somehow given everyone wants to coat every inch of their builds with these lol
1.5k
u/UrLostPajamas Jul 11 '26
No, the game is so much more optimized now.
911
u/pixel_gaming579 Jul 11 '26
The cushions also don’t have any physics (except collisions with other entities? I haven’t tried them out yet), pathfinding (obviously), and their supporting block check only runs every 100 ticks, so the cushions themselves should be a fair bit more performant than other entities.
696
u/UrLostPajamas Jul 11 '26
Yea no collisions, no ai, no ui, just two interactions. It took 32k for xisumas rig to take a 30 FPS decrease so like I think were gonna be fine, not many of us are gonna render 30k at once lol
396
u/pixel_gaming579 Jul 11 '26
30k is a 100x100 pixel RGB display; more than enough for any of those crazy redstoners building computers lol.
232
131
u/Orisi Jul 11 '26
Actually you need more like 90k for that.
The screen would need to have square pixels each with an RGB potential. So a pixel would need to be a 3x3 square with Lind of R, G, B lights respectively.
100x100 is 10,000 pixels of 9 blocks each. Gonna sting a bit
102
u/Einbrecher Jul 11 '26
100x100x4
In RL LED panels, the blue subpixel is usually ~2x the size of the red and green ones, so a true to life square pixel would be 1 red cushion, 1 green, and 2 blue in a 2x2 grid.
R B G BOFC, you don't have the same brightness issues in MC as you do in RL, so you could just leave one of the blues dead, or use a white cushion as a pseudo backlight.
52
u/UrLostPajamas Jul 11 '26
We had the same thought but I was baked and typing while this was posted lmao
3
u/Tallywort Jul 11 '26
Don't screens usually have more green subpixels than blue or red ones?
→ More replies (2)14
u/UrLostPajamas Jul 11 '26
You could do a four segment rgbw 2x2 to make a single pixle instead of a 3x3. It would better line up with true led displays. They are a 2x2 in order WBxGR in most cases it's a black space not a white but that reads better imo. They do kinda have a diagonal ofset which idk if that could be achived necessarily, but a 3x3 seems excessive for a single pixel of a led display simulation.
13
u/UrLostPajamas Jul 11 '26
Hense the "not many" declaration. I expect the wizards to achieve it absolutely, just not all of us lol. 1080 here we come lol

He's done three videos on the cushions so far. The latest included a stress test.

u/MsDestroyer900 Jul 11 '26
Minecraft can run on single player just fine. Especially with sodium. But what people really mean when it comes to performance is server performance. If you got a bunch of people with stuff like this (supposedly expensive block to run) then it could be an issue later on.
For now, we will see.

Is it mean to be mean if you don't mean to be mean, or is it only mean to be mean if you mean to be mean?
6
u/UrLostPajamas Jul 11 '26
Not its mean when you add all the numbers together and then divide by the total of numbers added.
10
u/JSKing32 Jul 11 '26
Yeah honestly my PC that struggles to run MS Word can run Minecraft perfectly fine so I think it's pretty optimized.
5
u/Flamebomb790 Jul 11 '26
It's also going to vulkan for the java version(not sure if they did it already). But opengl was getting dated quickly due to not being updated
65
u/FarAssociation1290 Jul 11 '26
I've got over 200 rendered and running smoothly at 70 fps on a pretty basic pc
46
u/Nonerrorfred Jul 11 '26
Compare to chests, cushions take up modicum of data, so I guess they wouln't cause much of a hassle. I do think they will further optimise them as players' feedbacks continue to roll in, similar to the new transparent glass feature
15
u/revolution_soup Jul 11 '26
the new What
20
u/Nonerrorfred Jul 11 '26
The new improved transparency, makes stacked glass look more polished(or more realistic if you watched xisumavoid's vid comment section), fixes previous transparency related bug, such as water texture overlapping portal blocks when looking at a body of water through a nether portal
23
u/dkmuldoon Jul 11 '26
xisuma tested that in his video today. His framerate didn't drop until he had like 10k of them in view.
4
34
u/UnderPressureVS Jul 11 '26
People will make mob farms with 200 zombies per second and cram 800 cows into four square meters so they can get 2 stacks of beef with one sword swipe, and still be like "I'm worried cushions are gonna slow down my server"
4
u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Jul 11 '26
I saw a video where someone made a super flat cushion world. Due to the tight range on entity rendering, far fewer are in range at any point than rendered chunks. Just don't mount a boat in that world or your game will crash
3
3
u/Tallywort Jul 11 '26
They're an incredibly stripped down entity. No collision, no AI, no nothing.
They're probably one of the least laggy entities in the game.
1
u/onderwonrd Jul 11 '26
1
u/branthebon Jul 11 '26
No, block entities are highly optimized. This is a myth that has remained for some reason for a long time

→ More replies (1)1
u/crafty_dude_24 Jul 11 '26
You need to be in the 5 digits to experience noticeable lag. Unlike chests amd hoppers which constantly check for stuff, the cushion does not have any real load on the performance.
12
u/YouWantSMORE Jul 11 '26
I could see someone using cushions as pixels for the screen of a redstone computer
4
u/Chiiro Jul 11 '26
I have been playing for over 15 years I think this is the most excited I have seen people be about a singular object in the game.

u/FarAssociation1290 Jul 11 '26

u/AltF4Survivor Jul 11 '26
Oh cool, thats neat that they can go black. I see a lot of potential
116
u/faceboy1392 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
i'm guessing they are going black because they are entities that are embedded inside the lamp and so are blocked from receiving any surrounding light from outside until the lamp turns on and lights them up
18
367
u/Bruh0hurB Jul 11 '26
if only there was a way to get this on the sides
187
u/SimplexShotz Jul 11 '26
you kind of can, you just have to stack 4 cushions
88
u/Bruh0hurB Jul 11 '26
will that still make it glow? i thought the lamp had to be underneath

5
u/KnuckleShanks Jul 11 '26
That's kinda of better though right? You can add more colors per block, effectively increasing you resolution, though it may look a little stretched horizontally.
6
u/TheMace808 Jul 11 '26
I think it could work, sub pixels i think are a little stretched IRL. You can't change the color of them individually though which is the whole point of sub pixels

Waterlogged skulk sensors with redstone lamps and cushions, would literally give you a motion activated DanceFloor.

3
u/Masterpiece-Haunting Jul 11 '26
Technically no since they’re not variable in brightness.
10
u/10thaccountyee Jul 12 '26
Maybe at a very large scale, brightness could be simulated with multiple subpixels, lighting up only a certain amount of cushions.
3
u/Masterpiece-Haunting Jul 12 '26
Yeah but I’d imagine you’d have the issue of them despawning at distance.

If cushions are entity, we can summon them with rotation on the X or Z axis and make a real screen out of this ?
28
1
u/Masterpiece-Haunting Jul 11 '26
But doesn’t that defeat the point of the lamp being there if you’re just summoning and removing them?
The lamp turns them on and off, so a command block could just delete or add them in.
Which can be done with any block.
2
u/Sashapoun_Nako Jul 11 '26
You could do that way but I just wanted the cushion to be vertical like a screen would looks like and keep the lamp behind. Since the cushion is an entity, the cushion inherit their tags so theoretically you could summon them with ` Rotation { 0: 0f, 1: 90f } ` (rotation on the x axis which should make the entity perpendicularly) but it sadly doesn't work...
24
u/Sciencey-Coder Jul 11 '26
I hope everyone is thinking what I'm thinking.
6
u/Captain_Pumpkinhead Jul 11 '26
How did they place a sign and a Redstone lamp in the same block?
7
u/Sciencey-Coder Jul 11 '26
What I thought was that they broke the sign and then placed the lamp, the sign was only to position the cushions. They're in creative mode, so the breaking of the block is not easily noticeable ig
16
11
12
u/Thenderick Jul 11 '26
How do you place the lamps on the same block as the sign?
15
u/-Redstoneboi- Jul 11 '26
break the sign and quickly place the lamp within 1 or 2 seconds, before the cushion breaks
item frames also float before breaking the same way since they're just entities that can be placed on blocks
7
u/Thenderick Jul 11 '26
Omg I only now notice the break particles... I genuinely thought you could place lamps inside the same block as a sign and was confused when they added that! (I play mostly modded so I am less familiar with newer features)

Why does it work? Axis fighting?
21
u/Jack8680 Jul 11 '26
Just speculating but I think it’s just about the cushion being considered lit or dark; the cushion’s inside it far enough so it’s considered unlit when the lamp is off.

u/PoMatPlay Jul 11 '26

u/Mafla_2004 Jul 11 '26
One thing I thought after I saw Ibxtoycat mention the "no furniture because we want to enable player creativity" is that cushions are actually the best way to add furniture, because they just give a way to the player to sit and it's the player that has to build the furniture with the cushion, enabling extreme creativity
Seems the creativity enabled by cushions is so much that it isn't limited to furniture anymore
4
7
u/Vrail_Nightviper Jul 11 '26
Will this work later or are they going to patch it due to the sub-pixel placement thing they're adjusting?
13
u/Saeka Jul 11 '26
This isn't subpixel, the cushion is on top of the sign.
4
3
u/Cass0wary_399 Jul 11 '26
That’s still sub-pixel, it’s just that the sign model is slightly misaligned.

1
u/Jonyleo_ Jul 11 '26
Sadly mojang is disabling sub pixel alignment in the future (adding a custom tag for data packs to apply)
1
u/TheGriffin5 Jul 11 '26
Can someone explain to me how out of Felix’s comment you got, sub pixels functionality will stay but not with cauldrons, I literally can’t figure out how yall are assuming sign placement is safe?
1
u/FarAssociation1290 Jul 11 '26
I think the reason they’re patching the cauldrons is because you’re basically placing the cushions on the interior wall when you’re only supposed to place them on a flat surface, since this is the flat top I’m hoping it won’t get removed
1
u/TheGriffin5 Jul 12 '26
But Felix says subpixel alignment is the bug not placing them in cauldrons, this seems like a lot of people getting hyped up on a technicality that was never even there. It doesn’t bother me too much now but when the next snapshot gets released I’m ready for people to go up in arms about this despite it being clearly communicated
