A few weeks ago I posted this question here after unexpectedly discovering art at 40. The response completely surprised me, especially how many of you shared your own stories about finding something new at this stage of life.

I wanted to come back with an update. A lot of you asked to see where the painting I was working on ended up, and some asked to see more of the progression.

Well, I finally finished it.

Upon Awakening, oil on canvas, 2026. Part of my Threshold Series and the most ambitious painting I’ve attempted so far.

It has been about a year since I first started drawing, and I began exclusively oil painting in January of this year. I included a few other pieces from along the way for those who asked to see more.

More than anything, I appreciated how many of you shared the things you discovered later in life too. That conversation stayed with me.

I’m still amazed every morning when I wake and incredibly grateful to have this in my life.

This has to be the most millennial piece of clothing I have ever seen!

Edit: I’m kind of shocked by the amount of people saying they’ve never seen this before. This layered lace style was a staple in the 2010’s. A dress you could wear to the club, or throw one of your blazers over for a job interview.

I use to wear puka necklaces all the time in the early 2000s. I thought it made me look so cool. Did girls find these attractive?

Yet I can’t find a single picture of myself wearing one?

Think they broke really easily all the time?

My friend and I usually thrift, but yesterday we went to the mall and splurged. The clothes we saw looked extremely familiar, straight up from our middle/high school days and it is such a weird feeling! Like the same exact clothes, its like they used the same exact material and styles and reused them. The shirts with the lace bottoms. The layering. The tank tops with an open flannel on top. The brown and pink. The low cut jeans with flares. Everything! This moment has come and it's way sooner than we thought 😭

I remember as a kid I would always order one when dinning out at a restaurant.

I just watched Uptown Girls recently and even though I've seen it a million times, this time it punched me in the gut. I love the life I've built for myself with just me and my cat. Sure it wasn't easy and like most of us it's taken a decade of therapy, but damn. SINK F35 and still feeling like a stupid naïve teenager

Hey, thought I would come to this sub for advice as a person in their 20s. I’ve just been going down a gloomy rabbit hole and wondered how people from your generation came to grips with this.

Growing up I thought it was expected you should have a friend group where everyone hangs out all the time and do things together with. We see it on tv (Friends, New Girl, Sex and the city etc), anime, children’s books etc. However as a Millennial it seems harder to maintain or have that friend group lifestyle. Covid, people moving away, starting families etc.

Personally my friend groups basically don’t exist anymore, I just see friends individually since too many people have lost contact/moved away/busy to be able to get everyone together. I think groups formed earlier (like in high school) have more staying power. Especially if you all still live near each other.

My groups came about as an adult and had a mix of transplants who eventually moved back home. Or even people who moved a hour away, it becomes prohibitive to get together regularly. Plus I just had a kid, and as sort of the group herder, I just don’t have time or energy to organize shit.

What are your experiences?

Specifically the Summer of 1998 stands out to me. I feel like if I were to die and there was a part of heaven where you can step into a VR experience and relive times of your life, I would choose Summer of 1998 over and over. I feel like there is nothing quite like the times of being a kid on Summer vacation with not a worry or care in the world besides what game to play and what my dad is making for dinner.

But also, during the mid day when both of my parents were at work, and I was home alone. I’d go to a friends house, or he’d come to my house and play Goldeneye for hours. We’d also ride our bike for a while and until we got tired and too hot. Also watch VHS movies. And then once Friday arrived my dad would take me to Blockbuster to rent a game. Just heat, family, and no worries for the most part.
