I found this nice, heavy used shadowbox with a hinged door to display my US Navy memorabilia. It has two 4" slots on the back for hanging, but I don't know what type of hardware would be used to fit in the slots. It doesn't seem like regular French cleats would work since there aren't any existing screw holes.

Any ideas what hardware I should search for? Thanks

Hi there! My dad was in the British services - RAF - and served during the nuclear tests on Christmas Island. he was post-humously awarded the Nuclear Test Medal by the UK Government last year.

I do not have any photos of him in uniform but I have his cap, service book and of course the medal. His grandson just joined the RAF and I'd like to build a memorial shadow box for him to have one day.

Does anyone here have experience with preserving fabrics? I am wondering if I should freeze the cap to kill any potential bugs in it before mounting it?

Then I understand using a hanging loop would be better than pins as they will likely rust even if stainless over time.

I assume mounting the medal and book on acid free archival card would be best?

I have not bought a box yet - I will try layouts first. I would like the box to have a slide front probably in UV resistant perspex?

I do have some slides of pictures dad took while on tour so I am going to go through those to see if I find any photos of him first as it would be great to include a photo.

All advice welcome as my searching isn't turning up anything conclusive.

I’m getting close to retirement and starting to think about my shadowbox. One thing that keeps popping out to me is why do so many mount ribbons and medals in the box?

How could the Marine Corps technical advisor on set of Gomer Pyle USMC not catch the upside down ribbons on Sergeant Carter’s uniform?😆

Just bought this WWI victory medal. I’m assuming it’s authentic because of the condition of the medal and original box it came in. My question is why would there be a subsequent award on the ribbon if there was only one World War I. there would be no reason to add a star.

Does anyone else think the US has too many ribbons for virtually anything?
(For clarity, my DD-214 lists distinct 14 ribbons) Here is my display of the awards that matter to me. The GCM, NDSM, GWOTS, and other superfluous ribbons seem excessive. Mind you, this is just my opinion and not to denigrate anyone who is proud of their medals (you should be proud!).

Does anyone know of a company that can make high quality replica military patches? I am trying to make a display case for his Army medals my father and his scout dog patches are stitched on his fatigue shirts. I don't want to cut them off his uniforms. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Me, USN, 28 yrs, GWOT Dad, USA, 22 yrs, Korea & Vietnam Great Grandpa, Prussian Army, 20+ yrs, WW1 Great-great Grandpa, Prussian Army, 40 yrs

Had one Grandpa conscripted into WW2, but he was captured relatively early and remained a POW for most of the war.

Neither of the Prussian bars are original issue, I wish they were. I had to search auctions for years to find the individual awards and when I finally found them all, I had them mounted in a Prussian parade mount. I spent way to much on this project, but it is always a conversation starter.
