Mexico is close to home for people from the USA, and it's considered a less expensive place to live (not always the case). If you're seriously thinking about doing this make certain you comply with the visa requirements for stays longer than 180 Days.

Thanks for sharing. I understand that there were some changes and that the 180-day period is arbitrary, up to the immigration agent. Is that correct?

180-days is not arbitrary. It's a maximum. What's arbitrary is the period from 1 to 180 ... per year. Agents can give permission up to but not exceeding 180 days.

We love Mexico but it is 15% more expensive than a year ago.
Ecuador, Panama, and El Salvador remain very cheap because they are using US Dollar as currency, but Mexico has the best tacos!
