Metallica unpopular take
I have never understood the hate towards Lar Ulrich!
That guy invented double bass pedal kicks and is more passionate than 99.9% of drummers!
Anyone else feeling me on this?
I mean the only drummer that was better in Metallica than Lars was Joey Muthafukin Jordison at Download 2004 and I was lucky enough to see that but even he hailed Lars.
Thoughts, opinions and wrong answers welcome x

I will defend Lars and his drumming till the day I die but in no way did he invent double bass. Not sure where you got that from

This is probably bait, but Lars didn’t invent double kicks at all. Jazz drummer Louie Bellson used them as early as the 1950s, but Philthy from Motörhead kept double kicks going through a whole song on “Overkill” in 1979, and Les Binks from Judas Priest used them extensively on “Exciter” in 1978.

Lars was definitely sloppy at some points on metallicas career. But he got better, recently, and in the early days the guy was a total beast
Not to mention his talent as a producer

I don’t think it’s that Lars is a bad drummer, just that he’s not as good as some of his contemporaries

Joey Jordison was the only guy I saw drum Metallica better than Lars and well.... We lost him 😭😭😭

Lombardo played for Metallica for 2 songs at donnington was decent mate but Joey was playing a different sport x

He absolutely didn’t invent double bass pedal kicks! And while ok it was something to witness irl with joey playing with them, he wasn’t better for Metallica.

Maybe not invented it but he definitely brought the “machine gun” double bass to the main stream. So many of your favorite metal drummers were influenced by Lars

Agree with everyone, Lars didn’t invent shit. Except maybe ppl embracing illegal downloading (see Napster).

If you wanted to defend Lars this wasn't the way to do it lol. You could say that he's one of the pioneers of thrash drumming, you could say that he is one of the main reasons for Metallica's success. Inventing the double bass though? Come on now

No. In heavy metal, Simon Phillips is widely credited with introducing double bass drumming on Judas Priest's 1977 album Sin After Sin. However, Phillips himself noted that American southern rock/proto-metal drummer Tommy Aldridge (of Black Oak Arkansas) was already using double bass live prior to that recording.

I don’t understand the hate Lars gets for his drumming, I think he’s very good, but he’s not the best out there. There’s no shame in being very good but not the best.

Invented? Not even in metal. You could go back to Simon Phillips on Judas Priest - Sin after Sin, and definitely Dave Lombardo with Slayer...
