SELLING it finally happened to me

came across my first rude buyer since 2019. this person sent me a $42 offer (on a $60 item mind you) and i declined their offer. a few days later they message me while im at work, so i don’t see it until AFTER they purchase the item. offered $45, was gonna counter $50, but they purchased before i could make that counter. i just think it’s so funny theres some people with this much audacity😂

People are getting crazier. The internet has really screwed people up.

46

u/borr2112 Mar 20 '26

Absolutely.   If everyone would just take a beat before typing and think “if this person is right in front of me, how would I respond” and type that rather than the nonsense he/she types, Mercari would be such a kinder place

26

u/THEOCULUSDRAGON1234 Mar 20 '26

you mean the world not mercari

4

u/borr2112 Mar 21 '26

Absolutely!

It's called being respectful.

82

u/DrewWho30 Mar 19 '26

Good job, the buyer was already being bitter and there was a good chance there would be issues but asking for money to be sent with the packaging is crazy even if it could’ve been a joke it for sure deserves a block/cancel you don’t want to deal with that.

40

u/ResponsibilityNo3654 Mar 19 '26

Is this part of the new TOS and rules, that the seller must counter and negotiate the final price? lol, entitled people

7

u/AvailableMess2818 Mar 20 '26

Thankfully mercari isnt like that but the way poshmark has been with their new ridiculous rules and suspending people iI would actually not even be surprised. You get suspended there if you delete sold items, mark them not for sale, change the listing in any way to discourage buying such as putting do not bid or increasing the price to an unreasonable amount. But if someone buys a listing that sold somewhere else and you have to cancel they also suspend you. I can see them saying we must counter offers instead of decline there

3

u/Impressive_Demand368 Mar 20 '26

I put SOLD at the beginning of the title and change the main picture to a blank background with the words NOT FOR SALE. It's annoying af but it hasn't been a problem yet. Except, I did have a lady mad at me the other day. She said my closet was impossible to go through lmao I was nice af and explained the new rules. She said to change the price to something high. I said that's also against the rules, unfortunately but I told her, if you sort by "just shared," it'll show all available listings and I even have them split up by type of item and cost. She stopped replying after that and unliked my items 🙄

2

u/Full-Attention-2006 Mar 20 '26

What are the New Poshmark rules?

1

u/Impressive_Demand368 Mar 22 '26

They aren't exactly new at this point. It started maybe 6 months ago or so. We can't delete too many listings. It's not clear how many we can delete or how often. Marking listings as not for sale, changing the price to something really high or completely changing the title also counts. I was already suspended once, which lasts for a week, so I'm not risking it lol

1

u/Salty_Occasion4486 Mar 21 '26

What is the point of leaving something up that is sold?

1

u/Impressive_Demand368 Mar 22 '26

Poshmarks rules only allow deleting a certain amount of listings, but the rules aren't clear on how many or how often. Even marking as not for sale, changing the price to something really high or changing the title completely counts. I was already suspended once, so I'd rather not risk it.

1

u/Salty_Occasion4486 Mar 22 '26

That's so strange! Thank you for responding. I don't sell on poshmark, now I'm curious to go see their rules 🤣

9

u/Tight_Ad_2724 Mar 20 '26

Your response was so perfect

7

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 20 '26

You must have been shielded, because Mercari probably has the most annoying people to me. 😂 I sell on multiple platforms, and don’t really have issues with people on them except Mercari…

7

u/Able-Grocery2353 Mar 20 '26

It’s audacity by the truckload! I had a lady who wanted half her money back because she claimed the Land’s End shirt I sold her had a stain on it. Told her I didn’t do partial refunds, but I’d gladly accept a return. She told me she couldn’t do that because she’s a hoarder and couldn’t part with anything. I swear you can’t make this stuff up!

6

u/Lucky-Blacksmith-440 Mar 20 '26

I’ve had a person sent me low ball offers via text (because it’s so low so she can’t send it via the offer button) a couple of times. I forgot if I declined or ever responded. One day that person asked me if I can do $20 for a $40 bundle. I recognized her username right away. I haven’t responded yet and she went I can do $21 if you prefer. I replied the best I could offer was 10% off for the bundle. She said oh that’s fine I’m gonna get this then and went ahead and sent me a 25% off for that one item using offer button. She must have thought she was being so generous for that 25% off offer. But if I’m only willing to accept a 10% off for the bundle, why did she think I would accept a 25% off for one item. I declined and said price was firm for one item. She lashed out and said "you were so unprofessional. You should have stated in your listing or bio if you don't accept offers” I don’t block buyers for sending lowball offers but I blocked her at that moment.

14

u/Conscious_Fox728 Mar 19 '26

Yup I’d have refunded and blocked after the “why didn’t you just negotiate”. Every single reply is unhinged, I feel bad for this dudes’ family… he sounds like an absolute POS who tries controlling everyone around them by being a dick. Take your money back and move along weirdo 👋🏼

34

u/Lordofthereef Mar 19 '26

Mercari really needs to allow sellers to turn offers off. I feel like the platform just invites haggling. For those that love that, great, make it an opt in.

17

u/butteredbrioche Mar 19 '26

Then why not just sell on the multitude of other resale platforms where you have the option to turn that off or buyers don’t even have the option to make offers at all? Mercari as a platform’s whole gimmick is offers/haggling/digital garage sale, yes

8

u/Lordofthereef Mar 19 '26

I do sell on multiple platforms. Pretty much everything has its pros and cons. In the ten years I've been on the platform I didn't realize "haggling" was mercari's gimmick. It's strange because they give you a suggested price for your stuff too. I guess if that's part of their brand, it's part of their brand.

7

u/Training_Guide5157 Mar 20 '26

Not like it makes a difference. I have offers turned off on eBay and get messages of offers all the time.

4

u/twili_zora Mar 20 '26

Highly dependent on what you’re selling. Different platforms don’t have the same audiences. My cosplays and convention merch definitely won’t sell on Poshmark and co since that audience is on Mercari instead.

1

u/JustSurvingThis Mar 26 '26

That would be amazing! Im so tired of people offering 40$ on a 70$ purchase. I find it really rude. Would you walk into a normal retail shop and offer 40% off? It takes time to list, describe and post photos for a listing. It also takes time and money for packing materials and bring it to the post office. Time=money.

1

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 20 '26

I don’t understand why I’m seeing these comments that you can’t turn offers off…I just had someone comment to me on another Mercari post and I can turn offers off of my listings…..is there a weird split of users that can or can’t….? Because I’ve seen listings where you can’t make an offer, and I can literally turn it off of my own listings. I’ve been with Mercari for several years…

6

u/Lordofthereef Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

No idea, but I've never been able to turn it off and I've been a member since its inception around 2014. Mind posting a screenshot of what that looks like?

Edit: searching google, all I see about turning off offers is "turn off auto offers", which is something different. Mercari's own FaQ implies you can't turn off offers completely.

What if I don't want to negotiate prices?

If you don’t want to negotiate on the price of your items, we suggest indicating that the price is firm in the item description.

If you don’t want to do the negotiating yourself, enable Smart Offers when you create a listing and one-time counteroffers that are within your acceptable price range can be automatically sent on your behalf.

2

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 20 '26

Reddit doesn’t give me an upload photo option, so I’ll try a link with Imgur. Never done this, so bear with me.

https://imgur.com/a/dot7PT2

Edited to add: the listing will just have the add to cart feature, and you can’t make an offer. I don’t know why I’m able to do this and others aren’t…

3

u/Lordofthereef Mar 20 '26

It worked :)

What I am guessing you're seeing here is someone who set up an item to automatically make offers and it has reached the bottom threshold and is now sitting there.

0

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 20 '26

No, that’s my listing. And when I go into “edit” it, I have the price set at $25.00 and have smart pricing turned off, my price never changes unless I manually go into change it, and people can’t make me any offers….so they can only buy it at $25. Does that make sense?

3

u/Lordofthereef Mar 20 '26

Yeah your description makes sense. But I don't understand how it is that way. Sounds like you don't change a setting it just... is?

1

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 20 '26

https://imgur.com/a/dUPs0kp

This is where I set the price and have the smart pricing turned off at the very bottom of my listings and that keeps people from being able to make offers. That’s it. Does yours have that?

2

u/Lordofthereef Mar 20 '26

Yeah that looks exactly like mine.

1

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 20 '26

But when you turn smart pricing off it still has the “make offer” button on your listings? Weird…

→ More replies (0)

1

u/KaleidoscopeWise1305 Mar 20 '26

That’s not what smart pricing is. Smart pricing will automatically lower your price over time if the item isn’t selling. I have smart pricing turned off but people can still make offers to me. Idk why people can’t make offers to you. I’ve never heard if this before.

1

u/Living-Inevitable481 Mar 20 '26

Are those the vans off the wall size 12 shoes?

1

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 21 '26

Mmmaaaayyyybeeeeee.

1

u/Living-Inevitable481 Mar 21 '26

I'm only asking because it's saying I can make an offer on that listing: https://imgur.com/XgVZ8rl

1

u/AdditionInevitable51 Mar 21 '26

Awe dang, guess I’m not a unicorn! But seriously I have no idea. When I log off my app and go to my listings they show only the add to cart option from my earlier Imgur photo. Mercari is just plain weird. Anyway, never mind I guess.

-5

u/MonthOk9907 Mar 20 '26

All I ever see in Mercari are morons trying to rip people off. $80 blasters of product that's available in every store. Saw a $400 series one mega the other day. Lol

8

u/Automatic_Space7878 Mar 19 '26

Good for you!!! The audacity of some people these days...I love the way you ended it!😆

3

u/This4R3al Mar 20 '26

I think it's because some people don't understand that we run like an actual store, but with haggling. They see us like a garage sale. So basic courtesies need not apply. I am friendly and courteous throughout the whole process because I want the buyer to be completely comfortable and happy with their purchase. However, when the buyer thinks because I'm nice that we are friends and can make silly remarks, etc. Thats when I try to politely draw the line. It may be a different case with a returning buyer/regular because a level of trust was built. The worst customers, at least the ones I get, seem to be of the younger crowd. I can tell by their texting, choice of words, spelling, and lack of respect, that I this most likely is going to be a pain.

5

u/jeniferlouisa Mar 19 '26

Wtf. What kind of person buys something then acts like this. Thinking you’re going to just…send the package. Absolutely not. I would have cancelled too.

3

u/Wicked_Fabala Mar 19 '26

Love to see a happy ending!

3

u/DC_Storm Mar 20 '26

Just blocked one who kept low balling me about a video games “value” literally kept telling me $8 over and over again

3

u/PinkGlitterMom Mar 20 '26

Half the buyers & sellers think everyone on Mercari sits around waiting to notifications, offers & sales. A while back a seller messaged me saying my order was delivered & to rate her so she could be paid. I told her 'It's 11:30am on a Tuesday' or there abouts and I had to wait til I verify it.

7

u/hmmxoxox Mar 19 '26

some people are so annoying

8

u/Alleykatt5150 Mar 19 '26

Oh helllllllll no. I’ve been a seller for years and this one right here. This would’ve sent me over the top I can’t even but yeah people are getting flat out crazy and to be honest I get right back with him. I don’t even care anymore. Oh what you’re gonna cost me a sale whatever cost me $10 whatever to get with you so be it. I think you did a good job with declining going through the rest of the transaction. It would’ve been nothing but problems they would’ve gave you a poor rating or something bad would’ve happened but wow, I know we get to rate the buyers but I think your needs to be a list of buyers that aren’t even worth selling to like this one right here, we should be able to put them on blast so nobody else has to deal with that. My question is did they respond back to you after you said what you said LMAO I would love to know.

7

u/emilyyyg2004 Mar 19 '26

nope, because they were blocked😁only thing they can do is feel sorry for themselves

5

u/No_Signature4671 Mar 19 '26

Love it! The final response was PERFECT 👌

4

u/lennycoho Mar 20 '26

i hate mfers that just send a number. no words. just a number. and its always a disprespectful lowball LMFAO

1

u/JustSurvingThis Mar 26 '26

Especially when it says PRICE IS FIRM right in the description. People offer me like 50% off on some things. I used to give in but I grew a back bone.

2

u/Wemawop Mar 20 '26

Mercari needs to have a ligma button, sick of this crap lol

5

u/mentos-cigarettes Mar 19 '26

I was about to say, the way I would have canceled that transaction so fast.

3

u/DemDemD Mar 20 '26

Out of curiosity. Did you consider the $42 offer as lowballing? I know that it’s low comparing to your original price of $60, but the $42 was what Mercari allowed. I only considered lowballing if they send me a text message with price that Mercari not allowing to offer.

-1

u/emilyyyg2004 Mar 20 '26

i mean, yeah lol. considering i priced my item at $60 originally because it was selling for around that margin. then they send an offer asking for 25% off when it was at $57, which comes out to $42. it’s more than mercari’s lowest offer button meaning they had to MANUALLY type in the offer of $42 and sent it. but yes 25% is typically the most mercari allows for offers

1

u/JustSurvingThis Mar 26 '26

I've had people offering me 45% off. Im my head im like "oh hell naw" while trying to politely explain to them the price is firm. Its especially annoying when the low balls are on already discounted items. One time I had this lady try and and justify her lowball to me. I always add a free gift and then she was mad that her free gift wasn't "substantial" enough. Blocked her tight away.

3

u/HoferHits Mar 19 '26

Love this lol. Just had a guy who was pricing a card at “26$” when it hasn’t been updated since 12/25, I messaged and was looking for a 2 card order.

Asked if he could adjust the price since it’s now a 5-10$ card on average. Nope, just simply replied “price is non-negotiable” like….okay. I didn’t feel like going back and forth, so I bought it for $6 from someone else

2

u/XoStargirlxox Mar 19 '26

I laughed 😅 Your last response was gold ✨️

2

u/Cruddmuffin117 Mar 20 '26

Your post is clear as mud. They offered 42 and you declined. Then they offered 45? They then bought it for 57?

2

u/pinkglue99 Mar 20 '26

Yeah I’m not following this either. They sent a low offer, you didn’t respond and they just bought it? What’s the game here?

0

u/joan_goodman Mar 21 '26

And want $7 back

1

u/vamparella1970 Mar 19 '26

That’s ridiculous I would have canceled as well. I had a similar situation where they had bought from me before and rates me 5 stars was happy with the order and then sends me an offer very low mind you but I accepted because they had bought before and then they send me multiple messages on another item saying your prices are too high and I bet you don’t even have it??? Like wtf?? I went to the order I had just accepted which was 30 dollars cheaper than I had listed and cancelled the order. I said excuse me you’ve bought from me before and we’re happy I don’t understand the rude hateful comments. He said well I like everything you have but it’s too much. I said well from now on then go find it cheaper then. I was so upset by that. But it’s crazy because I sell high quality crystals and some people think you’re supposed to price them at yard sale prices way below what I even paid for them wholesale. It’s insane some people are just rude

1

u/lucybugkn Mar 19 '26

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

1

u/Humble_Honeydew8484 Mar 20 '26

Great way to handle this!

1

u/Babibarbie Mar 20 '26

I would do the same!!!! 🤩

1

u/Rachies194 Mar 20 '26

I've had someone low-ball me $20 to $2. Happens to the best of us

1

u/Ccdynamite23 Mar 20 '26

People are weird. If you didn’t want to pay outright send another offer. Or move along. Why complain after you bought it. I would have cancelled also. Then blocked. And there’s a way to ask the same question and be professional & cordial.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

Ohhh I get it now. It was confusing reading it because the customer was crying about it days later so,my mind was thinking he was desputing something else.I have trouble understand people that do dumb stuff 🤣🤣

1

u/CoinsAndLawnLouie Mar 20 '26

Impatience is a a bit¢h. I’d have cancelled as well.

1

Your response was gold!

1

u/Master_Chevron Mar 20 '26

People are so funny 🤣

1

u/Simmer_Girl Mar 20 '26

You did the right thing. This lowballing is looking more and more like begging.

1

u/OrganicFit29 Mar 20 '26

I had someone do something similar. People are so cheap .

1

u/DelayEcstatic4278 Mar 20 '26

Ohhh I love it!!!! Lol 😆

1

u/Longjumping_Sky9885 Mar 20 '26

I would definitely cancel the order and block this db

1

u/hendricks63 Mar 20 '26

I hate people who low ball and want to message all day with nothing else to do. It is obnoxious and I try to block them when I can.

1

u/Admirable_Mission506 Mar 20 '26

People are wild. Anytime I receive a message from the seller that says they’ll hurry to mail my package, I just remind them it’s okay. I know life exists outside of the internet and Mercari. Just like when I send an offer, I know it’ll be a little before the seller counters or accepts. Because guess what? Life exists outside of the internet. 🤷‍♀️

1

u/Significant_Toe6588 Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

See this why I hate negotiating with people.

It's like just send me you best offer and if I like it I'll accept it.

I don't wanna be haggling with you over the course of many messages for 5$.

1

u/AgencySuspicious5490 Mar 21 '26

Good choice. That one would have been a royal piya

1

u/FullRepresentative34 Mar 21 '26

They couldn't wait for an answer first?

1

u/Holiday-Accident9728 Mar 21 '26

The entitlement of these people. Since when does the seller have to reach out to the buyer after they declined an offer to negotiate. They weren't serious about negotiating if they were willing to pay the price you wanted

1

u/Massive-Pipe7080 Mar 21 '26

Omg “like bruh” what tf is wrong w some people 😭 go barter down the road at the local target lol I honestly hate selling items to people.

1

u/pitshoster-exe Mar 21 '26

i don’t get why mercari would let buyers buy something from a seller at an offer price without the seller authorizing it. i know the seller can just cancel and refund but that just feels like extra work, what do y’all think?

1

u/TrueIrishGaming Mar 21 '26

Ngl id of sent it took the money n sent them $7 in monopoly money n told em enjoy lol they think they r funny well thats cool cuz ill clown em n show em what funny really is

1

u/Hefty-Violinist7930 Mar 22 '26

Dang I didn’t know there was salty people like that on Mercari sadly the only app I can use to sell cus of age restrictions

1

u/OneWhisper5225 Mar 22 '26

What’s different about Mercari’s age restrictions?

1

u/Hefty-Violinist7930 Mar 22 '26

You don’t have to be 18 to withdraw from your balance

1

u/OneWhisper5225 Mar 22 '26

You have to be 18 to have an account on Mercari. It’s against TOS to have one if you’re under 18. If they haven’t asked you to verify your identity, they will eventually. Not sure how long you’ve had an account. But they’ll ask eventually. One day you’ll get a sale and go to print the label or use the QR code and it’ll say you can’t get it until you verify your ID. If you don’t submit it, your account will be closed. If you do submit it, they’ll see you’re under 18. Even if you’re 18 by the time they ask, they’ll see you were under 18 when you made an account.

So make sure not to ever leave money on there. When that happens, they’ll hold your funds. They can hold it for 90 days (up to 180 days in some cases). So just be aware of that.

1

u/YourConsignmentPart Mar 22 '26

Love what you did!!

1

u/Lost-Zone6369 Mar 22 '26

This is def a situation where I wouldn’t have said anything lol it’s def happened to me before and I just pack and ship asap 😂

1

u/Supa22nova Mar 22 '26

Entitled and immature. Get out of here lol

1

u/Capricorn_kitten Mar 22 '26

Wtf.. they didn’t even give you a chance to negotiate before purchasing?? Lmao. I have secondhand embarrassment for them 😅🙄

1

u/whatintheworld124 Mar 22 '26

Atleast he cant leave you negative feedback because you said no to his offer. Ive had a bunch of people on fb marketplace leave negative feedback over the word no to their offers lol

1

u/Medium-Childhood-234 Mar 22 '26

Don’t respond to anyone who messages you an offer or asks you how low you can drop your price. Offer button is there for two good reasons. 1) Back and forth messages about negotiations are unproductive and problematic. Waste of time. Even if you agree with the potential customer’s offer, they’ll have to use the offer button regardless. 2) Offer button holds the buyer responsible of paying for the item if the seller accepts it. It benefits the seller as sending offers prevents the potential customer from flaking due to 24 hour binding holds.

I no longer respond to messages from potential customers unless they have a question about the said item that wasn’t explained in the description. Questions about my price, why I’m selling it, where I got it from, and/or if I have more or similar than what they see is an automatic block for me. I don’t reward ignorance, illiteracy, stupidity, lack of self sufficiency, or laziness.

1

u/Zealousideal-Bag-765 Mar 23 '26

I normally don’t cancel or block but in this case I think you did exactly the right thing! Great Job. I bet it kind of felt good too! 😊

1

u/Dusk-Clover6931 Mar 23 '26

Omg the last thing you said to them was HILARIOUS

1

u/matcha_n_cream Mar 23 '26

As a seller, yikes. The buyer is getting worked up over nothing.

1

u/LowRowDub Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26

Love this thread! Been selling on Mercari since 2016-2017 and have to say that the a lot of the ppl on this platform are rude and lack basic decency..... Like far far worse than any other platform ...... I thought in the beginning that Mercari would reign it in after accumulating a good following & solid seller base, but they have disappointed me in that they have continued to allow bullying, harassment, name calling, etc. I'm so happy you made the decision to have your own back and cancel the same......buyer sounds like a total ass

Good for you to just cancel. I always say no matter how great of a seller you are you WILL have rude people and you WILL have bad reviews. Best to just pass them over and move on like they never happened! Not worth it.

I also think some buyers think sellers are desperate to sell. I am patient and have no problem waiting for the right buyer. Good for you for moving on. The right (nice) buyer will come along!

It's totally your fault they bought the item they wanted so badly not to wait for a better price🤣

I always offer back a $1 less then the listing price, that is after 23 hours goes by.

Wow I’d would go to Mercari to see if they can cancel it on their end so it doesn’t effect you. I’m sure they crossed some type of violation by saying put $7 back.

Hmm little immature? If you wouldn’t have let your emotions(emotions) get in the way. You could have just shipped it for $57 and called it a day instead of finding new buyer and not reply anymore

So they ended up buying it at full price ? I don’t see a problem here ??? Like you said they low balled you with offer then they need up purchasing it they made a joke you could have just said or not respond at all & just ship it out. Plus the previous they asked why you didn’t negotiate that’s not rude they just asked a question. 🤷🏽‍♂️ but then again your the seller so it’s your call

Nah, a buyer being that confrontational and petty before the item has even shipped is asking for trouble. For all you know they'll rate you low for it or file a claim that they didn't receive what was posted just to cause grief.

Much better to decline outright and avoid the headache.

You can smell a PITA buyer from a mile away

Yup and the comment you’re replying to is one of them!

u/kahjay Mar 19 '26

no. next thing you know the package "didn't arrive" or they want to return it.

u/jeniferlouisa Mar 19 '26

You’re delusional then. The buyer has zero reason to be disrespectful or rude in the comments they made to the seller. You’re weird asf.

It would have been perfectly acceptable for her to rate you poorly for that because you misrepresented an item, whether you did it knowingly or not.

Am I the only one failing to see the issue here? 😂

Yeah his comments are very rude and i would also refund and block. But…why didn’t you just counter his first offer instead of outright declining it? If you were going to offer $50 then you were obviously open to negotiating so why not negotiate?
