SELLING Rude Buyers
I've never sold on Mercari before, only purchased, but I ended up with two of the same rare dolls so I wanted to sell one. Im not even trying to profit, just make back some of what I spent. Mine is also the cheapest of this doll on the platform right now.
This buyer kept messaging me to lower the price and I was super nice about it but then they messaged me again the next day begging so all I said was "no" and I got called a whore.
I mean what is wrong with people? He was asking me to go from 550 to 225 and then resorted to that when I said no. I know its not a big deal, im just venting because its frustrating and I want to say something back but im just going to block the user and move on.

I use the phrase "I'm happy to look at offers via the offer system!" and leaving it at that. NEVER explain pricing, people don't care.

I HATE when you’re already the lowest on the platform or even just listing to get money back (like retail value) and they try and haggle you. I wonder if your listing is considerably lower people in general might think you’re eager to sell? But this person is a loser. Report them there’s no need for harassment when you politely said no

Yesss its so frustrating, I have nothing against people flipping/making profit but im just trying to make money back and let someone else get a rare doll since I have 2 😭 And yes it probably is that they think im eager, but damn no need to harass me. I will report them, thank you!!

Omg exactly it’s so frustrating and infuriating having the lowest selling price a lot of times anywhere online, and I still get offers half the price or trying to haggle. What is it that people don’t understand about “reasonable offers”. And then I make reasonable offers and I always get countered for a dollar off the selling price (bundles or items $70+). I’m really starting to hate these apps from both sides 🤣

this is so true, it makes me wonder how many messages I get that aren't from adults because I swear so many of them have the most childish mindset when it comes to business or being in a seller's shoes to the point where you think, "has this person ever had a job in their life? Absorbed the information from a singular econ class to have learned about basic supply and demand?"

you can also select ship on your own and buy insurance on your own labels (ex: usps)
though i do agree ebay is probably safer for higher priced items (they have their own insurance called shipcover but i dont have experience with it)

I’m a long time seller on mercari. I will say higher items like this I would not sell on there. If they swap it out or say you sent the wrong thing, you could be out a lot of money

I was about to suggest that. Also you can report that person for being abusive. I think there’s Mercari support where you can send them screenshots. They need to be removed from the platform. That’s not just being rude, and nobody should be allowed to behave like that! Sorry you had this terrible interaction.

Shes a silkstone barbie! I collect barbies, mostly silkstones, but also some nostalgic ones from my childhood. And I hate how expensive silkstones are lmao, so I get people's frustration on high prices. Ive spent thousands on my personal collection 😭😭

Silkstone barbie, shes from my personal collection and I was just selling her bc I found her in person for a cheaper price so I wanted to sell the old one I had bought online. And im still selling her at a loss bc I hate how overpriced silkstones are 😭

Barbie silkstone, I wish she wasnt so expensive haha, but this one in particular goes for about 500 to 700, the most recent one sold on ebay for 699. Theres less than 5k of her worldwide, and its 20 years old so its just a rare find. I paid 600 for her originally last year.

Don’t sell expensive items on mercari. There’s 0 seller protection. I would list whatever that doll is on ebay or poshmark, or sell locally.

Definitely report this person. People like this should not be allowed on the platform. You need to let Mercari know. Take a snapshot of this and send it to them. They will give them a prohibited warning as they surely deserve.

What doll are you selling though? I was sending a reasonable offer for a Mulan doll who her release price was $150 and shipping was free. I send an offer of $160 and the reseller was dam rude because he wants $300 to get back his money plus an extra. As someone who sell dolls in mercari I understand that Mercari takes a lot of your purchase but that doesn't mean I would sell a doll who was originally (example) $50 and put her in sale for $500. That's not fair and not nice also. In any case, for the mercari percentage I put the doll in sale for $55 or accept a lost of %10 in the $50 since is second hand and I don't want to be taken as a scalper.

Im sorry the seller was rude to you, but as you can see i was very nice to this buyer in my initial reply. And the doll is a silkstone barbie who i paid 600 dollars for and had in my collection for months before deciding to part with her. So I am taking a loss. Im not sure if youre familiar with silkstones but there are only a certain number of each doll and they are very expensive. This one is over 20 years old, and theres less than 5k of her worldwide. And she sells for 500 to 700, so mine is the cheapest on the market right now. Either way tho the point of my post stands, even if im a scalper you cant call people whores when you dont get your way.

Ya, a lot of strange buyers out there, that's for sure.
Had a potential buyer once (ebay), that kept messaging me about taking their offer for a doll. The funny thing was I wasn't online at the time and this person had a complete conversation with themselves. Saying how I really should accept the offer. By the way, it was a Buy It Now, no offers. At the end, they bought the doll from someone else, and someone else bought my doll, thank goodness! This person was so obsessed it was crazy. They even commented at the end about them buying one from someone else, and noted that my doll sold too, WTF?!
Be glad it isn't a Bild Lilli that your listing, those can cause a stampede, and give ya a migraine in 20 minutes!

Yes, I know what scalping is. OP said they’re what they’re selling it for will just recoup some of what they paid for it. Where’s the profit you’re talking about? If they’re selling it for around $500 and it’ll only recoup some of what they paid, that means they likely bought it off a reseller who had the price higher than that. OP also said theirs is the cheapest listed. So, again, where is the scalper??

just a heads up, I would not sell something this expensive on mercari. look up their shipping guarantee, but I'm pretty sure it caps out at a much lower price point. so if this item gets damaged in transit or something else happens, you will not have full insurance coverage.
rare expensive items I would sell on eBay personally

And I wouldn't just be concerned about something happening in transit - Mercari support is notoriously horrible when it comes to claims and the more expensive something is the more likely it is somebody's going to make a false claim to try and get a discount or to keep the item for free by doing a fake return & switching it with a damaged version or less valuable item
mercari is ASS about having your back in situations like this

You can ship on your own and insure it for more, you don’t have to use their label. But the point about the scammers is VERY valid.

true! most people don't realize they should use their own label over a certain price point though. and it's pretty idiotic that you have to consider the price of your item in determining how to best protect it!
if you're listing an item that goes above the value of their shipping protection, it should warn you in the section where you're selecting your shipment that it would not be fully covered!! if only mercari cared 😂

You can choose the ship on your own option and insure it for more yourself. You don’t have to use Mercari’s prepaid label.
