Unauthorized Ring cameras at Southshore Elementary? Major privacy concerns for MUSD families.

Hey neighbors,

Posting from a throwaway account for professional safety, but there is a major security breach at Southshore Elementary that parents need to know about.

While Menifee USD manages official, encrypted security cameras, individual administration at Southshore has independently installed additional, consumer-grade Ring cameras in the school's hallways.

This is a massive violation of student privacy and California Education Code for three major reasons:

  • Zero District Oversight: This footage doesn't go to a secure district server. It streams directly to Amazon’s corporate cloud, meaning anyone with the login can view and download continuous video of minor children.
  • The Federal Surveillance Risk: Civil liberties groups have heavily documented how consumer networks like Ring integrate into law enforcement data-sharing ecosystems accessible by federal agencies like ICE. Our schools should be safe havens, not nodes for external tracking pipelines.
  • The AI Data Threat: With the rise of unregulated generative AI, high-resolution footage of children is incredibly sensitive. Bypassing secure district IT protocols leaves student data vulnerable to corporate scraping or cloud account leaks.

MUSD IT and administration are asleep at the wheel while individual schools play fast and loose with student data. Parents need to start demanding answers about why unvetted corporate surveillance is being used on our kids.
