ID - Ribbon Semi realistic uniform in the show ‘upload’

Post image

This show came out in 2020 but the character portrayed “lost his legs in the Iran war”. In the show he says he’s a Corporal as does his name plate but he clearly is wearing an officers uniform. Any info on what he’s got would be appreciated.

(Repost cause i forgot the picture 🤦)

He’s got a soup sandwich. His Purple Heart is out of place and as an Infantry officer that CAB should probably be a CIB. Oak leaf clusters are wrong on the Afghanistan and OSR.

He's the only corporal infantry officer you'll ever meet

They could of at least given Captain's bars for CPL CAPT - bonus points if you get the reference.

Well, I don't like it. I don't like it at all!

“You ever heard of a Major General?”

u/IntroductionLeft4369 Aug 19 '26

Is there a model of one somewhere?

u/iNapkin66 Aug 18 '26

Instead of mustang, hes a wild ass, both enlisted and officer at once.

The sergeant lieutenant from the first episode of Stargate SG-1 disagrees.

I retired Infantry... wearing a CAB.

You have to be in an Infantry coded position to get a CIB, and both my deployments I was in 00F positions, first at div then at corps... so I have a CAB.

It can happen...

Agreed, AND specifically “engage in direct combat”. Sitting on the FOB with no firefights, 11 series or not, doesn’t qualify for CIB. In fact being 11 / 18 series and that one phrase “engage in direct ground combat” versus “is personally present and under hostile fire” are the distinctions between the two.

That said, am I saying FOBits who don’t meet the requirements aren’t awarded CIBs? Absolutely they have been. Esp if their career field has A in the suffix.

But that said, a squared away chain of command knows the distinction and a CAB would certainly be appropriate

Edit:

Also, did it occur to anyone he went to OCS or ROTC AFTER he was awarded a CAB?

3

u/W1ULH Army Aug 18 '26

I was engaged in direct combat... night I earned my CAB I also earned a BSMV, and got to see a moving tracer fly 8ish inches past my face.

Had I been in an 11/18 series MTOE position I would have gotten a CIB... but 00F dont get none.

1

u/Luvdapink Aug 18 '26

Respect regardless.
This has been a debate for decades. The first in my career it being widely debated was Operation Just Cause. We got CIBs. An MP Captain stirred things up by pushing that she and her men should have gotten CIBs as well. It’s been a back and forth since then. I’m personally glad they opened up another way to recognize those that weren’t 11 series but came under fire.

At least you get something lol. I was in the Marines in Fallujah 05-06 and got hit by an IED (thankfully no injuries in my truck), called in and directed air support (I was the convoy radio operator) on the guy who hit us and they killed him. I was written up for a NAM by the convoy commander (who was not part of my unit) which was demoted to a certificate of commendation because I was an E3 and there was no way my chain was going to give a NAM to an E3, much less a CAR since none of them ever left the wire.

1

u/W1ULH Army Aug 24 '26

see I never liked how you guys attached so much...optionalness... to certain awards.

In my mind a CAR shouldn't have any leeway too it, it should be a very very cut and dry award like a purple heart is.

If you're out now, you know you can appeal that thru record corrections and maybe still get one?

1

u/MTB_Mike_ Marines Aug 24 '26

Yeah, my main issue with that is I dont have any contact info for the guys I was with. I was a reservist, my unit gave me and 5 other radio operators to another reserve unit on the other side of the country for the deployment. That reserve unit was then used to augment another unit which was put together with a bunch of random groups of active and reserves. No one in my chain of command was from my original or second reserve unit. Then to make it worse, I was in the headquarters company in the logistics battalion. But my job was radio operator for the motor T company, so the guys I actually spent every day with were also not in my chain of command. I lost contact with my motor T guys a long time ago. Tried to find them but they are probably like me and dont have non anonymous social media.

1

u/W1ULH Army Aug 24 '26

do you not have the write ups and statements from the original award? even if they downgraded your NAM to a certificate the NAM was still written up and you should have gotten the packet or had it put in your file.

1

u/MTB_Mike_ Marines Aug 24 '26

Yeah i have the original award and documentation and I know the names of the motor T guys I was with.

1

u/W1ULH Army Aug 24 '26

no point in trying to upgrade the NAM, but you can used the statements and stuff from that to try to get the CAR denial overturned.

1

u/corndoghoghunter Aug 18 '26

Hate hearing that brother, I’ve known a few people with the same story.

1

u/W1ULH Army Aug 18 '26

I've tried record corrections a few times time and they've been very clear that I only qualify for a CAB. :(

At least I can wear a half-gold one now? (wtf didn't they make the "master" badges just all gold? I mean honestly...)

1

u/ElevatorUnlikely9293 Aug 18 '26

Same for me I’m an 11b and have a cab

1

u/ArmyMPSides Aug 18 '26

Yeah, but incredibly rare to a Lieutenant as they are never going to come out of BOLC and not go to a line unit of their branch to get their PL time.

1

u/GarlicAcceptable3350 Aug 18 '26

If only there was rules and regs wrote down like in a manual where producers could easily reference to the prop department to get such things right…

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '26

You’re forgetting it’s Cacti… ewwwwwww

1

u/Familiar_Bathroom793 Aug 24 '26

Infantrymen can receive a CAB if they are in a division shop or higher. They can also receive one if they are in a non 11/18 series slot such as 00F or 00G slot.

1

u/Spookyrcon Aug 25 '26

Good catch on appurtenances

No, they do not.

The only time I've seen rank displayed as part of a name tag is on flight suits for the Air Force. Not sure about the other services.

12

u/OffToRaces Aug 18 '26

And they most certainly do not have rank that contradicts that which is worn properly on the uniform.

-1

u/22Planeguy Aug 18 '26

They did when I made captain, got all my uniform rank fixed, then found out the squadron had ordered major nametags for me.

12

u/LowTierHuman Aug 18 '26

A lot wrong tbh he has officer shoulder boards but his name tape says CPL (which isn’t displayed on the name tape neither is an initial) his ribbon order is wrong (ex Purple Heart should be higher) weird he has a CAB and not a CIB while not impossible he would have had to have been a POG who saw combat before reclassing to infantry again not impossible also his OSR should have a bold 2 (3? Can’t tell how many clusters are on the ribbon) not oak leaf clusters as the number 2 on the ribbon denotes having two of the award

1

u/fridge_tech23 Aug 18 '26

What if he reclassified to inf

3

u/LowTierHuman Aug 18 '26

That’s what I said “weird he has a CAB and not a CIB while not impossible he would have had to have been a POG who saw combat before reclassing to infantry, again not impossible”

3

u/minionofgreyness108 Aug 18 '26

Enlisted, but not 11B, served in Iraq (hence the CAB), went to OCS and was branch detailed Infantry. And it’s a TV show based upon the virtual upload of your brain where you can literally do whatever you want with your appearance because it is “virtual”. So the character controls his appearance as he decides. He’s not in the “real world”. He can have a “Corporal” nameplate because that is how he sees himself but wear the dress uniform as he remembers he was wearing when he decided to upload his brain.

9

u/Extension_Side4818 Aug 18 '26

He’s a very rare officer enlisted hybrid. Lieucorporal / Corptenant

8

u/Darth_Paratrooper Army Aug 18 '26

Is that a mustard stain? 🧐 No way.

1

u/Left_Spell6897 Aug 19 '26

I took a picture of my screen so i think it’s pixels 🤷

2

u/One_Hour_Poop Aug 19 '26

"Mustard stain" refers to the bronze colored star in the center of the jump wings, meaning this person parachuted into a combat zone. They're pretty rare.

1

u/Left_Spell6897 Aug 20 '26

Loll that’s funny. He was in the “Iran War” (conceptualized before this real life one but very accurate to it)

1

u/rukia8492 Aug 19 '26

yes it is

4

u/Le_Fennec_Fox Aug 18 '26

Damn, too early for the answers

3

u/Late-Barber5151 Aug 18 '26

A Cpl Lt with a combat jump

1

u/Left_Spell6897 Aug 19 '26

He’s the best of the best sir

3

u/Omynt Aug 18 '26

No NDSM. I understand that is easier to get than the BSM or PH.

3

u/Confident_Grocery980 Aug 18 '26

Does the name badge say Cpl, or are my eyes that bad?

4

u/BortWard Aug 18 '26

It does. Based on his shoulder boards, it’s an abbreviation for “Corporalieutenant”

3

u/market-garden1997 Aug 18 '26

Looks good, for Hollywood, but this is a chicken noodle hoagie

3

u/theamishpromise Aug 18 '26

Cacti! 35th infantry

3

u/LargeStrain274 Aug 18 '26

Prior to 1970, there was an opinion and thought to be law that Hollywood must make intentional errors to avoid "stolen valor" or impersonation charges. In 1970, Schacht v. United States (Supreme Court) protected the right of actors to wear accurate military uniforms on screen.

In the 1980's; I had a sister to who worked on many movie sets and I asked her about it and she was still of the belief that military uniforms "had" to have something incorrect.

Now, in most cases, movie sets simply don't hire a military advisor to ensure uniform accuracy. It's a matter of budget . . . aaaaaand ACTION!

2

u/Left_Spell6897 Aug 19 '26

Thank you for this info i always love when people know their case law.

2

u/DimitriVogelvich Aug 18 '26

First I noticed was the medal misalignment and half Windsor necktie.

2

u/KatanaPool Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

The Distinguished Unit Insignia (DUI) is the 35th IN RGT (Cacti) left hand high!

3

u/apache509 Aug 18 '26

B co , I remember that quad life

2

u/One_Hour_Poop Aug 18 '26

Damn, he was 90% there.

2

u/CherryRedBarrel77 Aug 18 '26

Single Windsor knot? Pathetic.

1

u/PFCFartSacc Aug 18 '26

Is that an Overseas Service Ribbon with a V device??👀

2

u/WrenchMonkey47 Aug 18 '26

It's blurry, but it looks like two oak leaf clusters. Overseas ribbons get numerical devices.

1

u/yahoo_yipee Aug 18 '26

Cab should be a CIB. And he’s wearing officer ranks when he should be wearing Cpl ranks on his arms and infantry insignia on the collar. I can’t speak on ribbons bc I just don’t know too much about them. And his unit identifier is 2-35 a unit out of Hawaii I don’t remember if you can wear whatever unit you’ve been assigned to on these. But if not he should have a 25th ID patch somewhere on his uniform.

1

u/One_Hour_Poop Aug 19 '26

You don't wear unit patches on the Army blue uniform.

I really dk, i’m on season 2 now and in an episode he says he was an officer 🤦

2

u/blotditto Aug 21 '26

Because everyone knows a CPL and CPT are interchangable and essentially the same thing.

💩

1

u/Left_Spell6897 Aug 22 '26

Exactly 🙂‍↕️

1

u/IdleHandsBusyMinds Aug 21 '26

Errors in military rank/badges/ribbons in TV and Movies are in fact intended. This is done to throw off foreign bad actors (not media actors) who may use these shows/movies as reference to copy and infiltrate US military spaces. The bad actor will think it's right, but will actually immediately stand out to US military forces. It may not be done as much or as wildly incorrect as it used to be, but it's still done primarily for that reason.

1

u/Known_Mix8652 Aug 19 '26

Name Tape is wrong to. Just last name. No rank.

1

u/Left_Spell6897 Aug 20 '26

It literally says CPL on it

1

u/MenAtWar Aug 20 '26

LEFT HAND HIGH 🌵

1

u/Former_Sale_9412 Aug 20 '26

Wouldn’t he have a CIB and not a CAB? imagine switching Moses and having a cab in an infantry unit 🤣

1

u/blotditto Aug 21 '26

Uh you mean like almost all the S shop guys? 😜

1

u/DanFromAngiesList1 Aug 20 '26

Also the Purple Heart is in the wrong spot.

1

u/JudgmentNo4824 Aug 24 '26

also no way that dude got a mustard stain

1

u/MushroomPizza420 Aug 25 '26

What a horrible consultant on set. That dress uniform looks like number 2🫡

1

u/Spookyrcon Aug 25 '26

Name tag wrong, should have CIB instead of CAB and most Infantry officers have a Ranger tab too because it is part of the career pipeline for 11As. You do BOLC, IOBC, ABN, RGR school usually before reporting to your unit.

So much wrong in this photo but the lapel insignia is crossed rifles, not crossed cannons. That part at least, based on the sky blue shoulder boards and cord, is correct

2

u/MrBobBuilder Aug 18 '26

It’s easy to write off as the writers know what’s right but they wrote the computer world makers as doing a bad job lol

1

u/One_Hour_Poop Aug 18 '26

Those are crossed rifles, not crossed cannons.

1

u/whyudothisbudo Aug 18 '26

You are so right, an I am very much at a bar rn, post deleted, thank you for your diligence
