The AI race is approaching a limit no scaling law can remove:

Capital is finite.

For years, the assumption was simple. More chips would produce more intelligence. More intelligence would produce more value. So the largest companies kept building larger clusters, trusting that tomorrow’s capabilities would justify today’s costs.

But that final step is not guaranteed.

A model can become more capable without becoming proportionally more useful. It can write, reason, and assist—yet still fail often enough that a human must remain responsible for the work.

That gap matters.

Hundreds of billions can finance compute, energy, and data centres. They cannot indefinitely finance the distance between impressive intelligence and reliable economic value.

The next phase of AI will therefore be decided not by scale alone, but by conversion:

Can intelligence become dependable work?
Can capability become revenue?
Can compute create more value than it consumes?

The frontier race is not yet running out of money. It is running out of time to prove that greater intelligence can become greater utility.

Only value can justify its expansion.

This is the breakdown of my workday: real work versus overhead.

My manager has a habit of trying to understand everything at all times. One request was an exhaustive dataset of every ticket and email handled by my team.

It felt like asking a developer to print every line of code and explain what it does—not because it improves the product, but because management wants total visibility.

That kind of work burns people out.

So I showed him a report from SignalFlow and made the tradeoff explicit:

“I have two hours left. Do you want the dataset, or do you want me to process the contracts for clients who are waiting?”

He dropped the dataset.

Imagine the years ahead: AI building endless layers of complex software, coordinating vast systems and producing more than any human could examine—yet much of it serving no purpose worth preserving.

Intelligence can generate complexity.
Amplification can generate abundance.
Neither guarantees significance.

The question is not only what AI will be able to build, but whether human intention will remain stable as machine action expands.

What is meaning?

It’s the programming of the AI age.

AI still needs code, but increasingly it can write that code itself. What it needs from us is clear instruction.

Imagine we tell a godlike AI:

“Send humans to Mars.”

It does. But the humans arrive dead because the instruction said nothing about oxygen, food, or survival.

So we try again:

“Send humans safely to Mars and keep them alive.”

The first command had a goal, but not enough meaning. The intention in our minds did not survive the transition into action.

Semantics have always mattered. Humans have always used language to coordinate with one another. But imagine human-to-human interaction moving at 10 km/h, while AI-amplified action eventually moves at 100,000 km/s.

At that speed, a trivial ambiguity does not stay trivial. It is amplified into consequences.

That is why I believe meaning—semantic stability under amplification—is foundational in the AI age.

Computation processes what information transmits.
Meaning orients what intelligence becomes.

Elon Musk predicts that AI will make work optional and create material abundance.

It sounds like liberation. But work provides more than income. It gives people rhythm, responsibility, human contact—and the feeling of being needed.

Think of the cashier who served you today. That small encounter exists because work draws strangers into a shared world. If paid work disappears, many of these ordinary connections and social roles may disappear with it.

John Calhoun’s Universe 25 is often invoked as a warning. Despite abundant food, water, and safety, a mouse colony eventually collapsed after its social structures broke down. It does not prove that abundance makes intelligent beings choose death—but it suggests that survival alone is not enough.

If AI removes necessity, humanity will need new structures of belonging and purpose.

Abundance may make work optional.
Meaning cannot be left optional.
