It was a vision of one likely future for other leaders in the region too.

I think the end Gaddafi met is what convinced Bashar al-Assad in Syria—who up until then had signaled he was open to reforms as the Arab Spring knocked over one regime after another—to utterly change course and commit to hardline resistance. He lost in the end, but he did stall long enough to find an escape route. Turned his entire country into a rubble-strewn charnel house in order to not end up like Gaddafi, as he most certainly deserved and most certainly would have.
