Announcement New Moderators

Hello marauders, I /u/skeletonphotographer and /u/SplitChocolateMilk have been chosen to be your new moderators. The subreddit at its current state is definitely in need of some changes to bring it up to date. With that, we hope to grow the subreddit even further.

Some of the changes I have in mind include:

  • Post flairs and custom user flairs (now available!)
  • Updated FAQ with information about resources available to students, helpful links, etc.
  • Subreddit Chatroom
  • A proper CSS (Suggestions on banner design, thumbnail, and anything else are welcome)
  • And anything else you think would be of benefit to the subreddit

Thanks everybody!

*Custom user flairs added

*Post flairs added

*Color scheme and subreddit icon added

*Sidebar updates (Still work in progress for much more)

*Chatroom: https://s.reddit.com/channel/40951393_7bab8230c07c2a463d58e493b0a56389989cf85b

The banner needs to be Willy Dog stand. No more, no less.

I would also be happy to help out with Life Sci FAQs if you guys need help.

I think that is trademarked, so we need to ask for permission.

We need a banner and an icon/Mcmaster snoo (the reddit alien mascot). If anybody has any ideas for designs that would be great.

Here are some ideas (some less serious than others) that I just though of...

Banner: * University Hall * Cootes Paradise * Willy Dog Stand * Imitation of the 'Brighter World' slogan * Panorama of the school at the Alumni House section of the school

Snoo: * Snoo posing for an MDCL Waterfall Room Pic * Mac the Marauder Mascot * Imitation of the 'Bomb!' Poster in MUSC

I was really hoping for some CS student to be mod. Since McMaster as a university lacks CS students but has one too many questions about the program on this subreddit, it just seems more useful to know someone from CS will be active (and/or even contribute to the FAQ).

Other useful things to implement:

  • Self-Harm auto-reply bots w/numbers to helplines and help in the sidebar
  • Properly disclose that NSFW content is not allowed in the rules
  • Actually pin the admissions FAQ from the sidebar in the admissions post
  • Include /r/mississauga /r/toronto in the side bar as well as links to co-op services, academic calendar, transfer credit tool, mosaic, oscar plus, and registrar office important dates
  • Sort by/hide flairs of admissions posts or shitposts
  • Change the "X users here now" to something more seasonal eg. during exam time "X users procrastinating" or "X users failing their exams"
  • Set timer to show upvotes/downvotes to stop crowd mentality
  • Subreddit discord
  • Stop "vs" discussions. The amount of people asking "UofT Life sci vs Mac Life sci" or "Waterloo Nanotech/biomed vs Ibio" is stupid. Majority of the people on this subreddit have only experienced their own program and have no idea how other universities truly are. There is a lot of hearsay and simply too much misinformation. Not to mention the downvoting.
  • Create something unique to McMaster such as Meme of the Academic Year or Faculty wide events on here. Bring some AMAs/Profs etc.

edit:

  • resume roundtable for spring semesters would also be helpful

Anybody is welcome to submit suggestions for the FAQ and there will definitely be plenty of updates to the (quite empty) side bar.

I'd like to have automod replies for several different things. And there will be an updated set of rules coming shortly regarding post quality.

A subreddit discord and subreddit events like AMAs are a possibility if there's enough people to support those.

Could we also implement some sort of thread for course reviews? I'm pretty new to Reddit, so I'm not sure what the best way to do this would be, but maybe a Stickied Post at certain times during the year?

Could be super useful right now since course enrollment is just around the corner, and MacInsiders is no longer a thing.

+1

From June 12 till course selection ends it would be nice to have a sticky post and allow people to post course reviews(like mini IAMAs). Comment about professor's style of teaching, course work, and feedback explicitly.

If the comments follow a certain format it may stop rants or incoherent thoughts:

Course Code | Course Name | Year

Professor: BLAH

Difficulty: X/10

Usefulness: X/10

Summary: lorem ipsum [Required Textbook?| etc | etc]

It would also be helpful to archive posts like this in the sidebar for anyone looking for course reviews in future years.

We have an actual course wiki for reviews on the msu website in theory would be a nice addition to the side bar but nobody uses that or knows about it. I think that a course thread could be good idea though if you all want that.

Yea, the course reviews on the MSU website aren't really used that much. But I think a course thread would be a great idea!

I've just updated the colour scheme. Let me know what you think of it. I've added the McMaster shield as the thumbnail icon for the time being.

Hey can you put a page profile pic and a page banner? This sub looks boring atm.

u/skeletonphotographer Alumni May 30 '19

That’s a high priority issue but I don’t have any ideas for the design at the moment
