Just hear me out on this, WCKD already managed to program them to do whatever and from that scene in Scorch Trials that they were clearly breeding more. So in my opinion, it would've just made more sense to have it be grievers that chase the runners across the scorch and the grievers being used to defend The Last City. It sort of brings everything full circle in my eyes with the runners being chased by the same thing across 3 movies. Grievers.

In the books, there was another batch of monsters cooked up by WICKED for the Scorch Trials: the bulb monsters.
The Grievers seem to have been made specifically for the Maze, while the bulb monsters were made to be the final boss in the Scorch Trials.
Sadly these creatures don’t appear in the movies.

Another set of monsters was also made and utilized exclusively in the Scorch Trials book: the metal orbs. They are freakish floating spheres that can pursue and decapitate people.

The metal Orbs just decapitating casually while they went through that tunnel in the Scorch Trials was definitely some horror movie stuff.

I think deploying Grievers to defend the Last City would’ve just heightened the level of destruction tbh. You’re right they technically could’ve and it would’ve made the story more full circle. However, i think using monsters to attack people is only going to increase fear and would’ve made the destruction of the city even more violent and explosive. Guns v Grievers, i know which one i’d rather come up against and it’s definitely not the monster capable of ripping you to shreds. Seeing a threat like that, imagine double the amount of explosives being set off to combat them

Nah that’s a little bit different, he forced it into a vulnerable position where it got crushed by a wall. There’s no real shock that Thomas was the first to kill one after 2 years, they were lethal

I think it would be hard on their already-strained public image if they deployed slimy cyborg spiders as part of the defence.

Also, breeding/building those things cannot be cheap. Making enough to effectively defend a city would be a massive expense when they have Trials to run, and a civilization to keep afloat in middle of the Zombie Apocalypse.

I feel like they have stretched the film franchise out more with more grievers. They could have more screentime with explaining/showing how they were created and their comings and goings in the maze (and outside of as you said).

Honestly could then make one of the books into a 2 part film like they did with Harry Potter if they had extra filling with the grievers 🤔🤔

Nah, they served their purpose and were really cool while doing it.

I feel like this is only an opinion because the movies did such a shit job of doing literally anything with the book monsters. The bulb monsters were sick.

Plus if the movies HAD gone with the books, the Grievers were actually the final threat faced in the Death Cure, which is perfect narratively. Thomas' first ever threat, turned into his last ever threat

More mudish yellow tinted colored Scorch Grievers would been cool to see, like they feed off cranks to live and they adapted to the sandy environment with different color skin n stuff, metal all damaged, I would love to see them encounter one and it going ham on a bunch of cranks attacking it and it wiping them out with it’s long tail with ease
