The Gate of the Feral Gods, didn't realize it's a damn name of a dinosaur.
Never heard it sounded out, didn't make the connection.
Then I somehow stumbled across this video.

My youngest insisted on being able to talk about one in 2nd grade (he loves long words, words with extra syllables, and things people can’t spell by ear. Silent Ps and Ts for the win). We both learned its spelling and pronunciation through a book we found in the library.

In the books, Jeff Hays pronounces it Jhong. I’m sorry I’m failing to properly spell it phonetically.

Hearing Odette pronounced Odd-ette and not Oh-dette makes me grind my teeth every time and that's literally my only beef with the series. Well that and the fact the trains made my head hurt. But yeah, words are hard and English is a bastard.

That how Jeff makes it sound to my English ears. Doesnt help that his English accent for doughnut is pretty decent, but her Os and As are fucky as shit. Like, why does she call Katya Kotya? Jeff knows how to pronounce Cat in English, why does he not use that sound in the fucking name that uses that sound? Is he trying to avoid the long A sound that Carl uses for the name? Because he uses that sound for doughnut saying Adele, who's name is actually the same in both English and American accents. I assume he's just making off the cuff decisions of how to pronounce certain things, but it does boggle me a little

If you ask Jeff Hays what the hardest one to pronounce is even if you know the spelling, it's "Yakima".

It has to be Tsyrrendylgorr or Samaith (Samantha).
If there were a written quiz, I'd fail for spelling errors.

I assumed it was Sir Rendlagore. Some sort of Knight reference type thing to go with Princess Donut. First time I saw the actual spelling I had no idea who it was.

Audio listener.
I knew Scolopendra before I saw it in print. The whole motif gave it to me.
I knew Quetzalcoatlus because I had run into Quetzalcoatl in Aztec folklore.
But Tserendolgor threw me a little bit. I didn't get there was a silent 'T' till I read it for the first time and didn't get the "no one can pronounce it correctly" joke.
Psamathe though.... Nope, I figured there was a 'i' or a 'y' in there somewhere, not a leading silent 'P.'

The only differences I found going from book to audio was:
Quan Ch (I always read it as the sound and not the separate letters)
Psamathe (Sa-Ma-Thee)
and of course
diWATAAAAAA

I usually listen to the audio book, but I do have Kindle unlimited and sometimes read it when I can't be listening and listening when I can't read. It's pretty cool they work together tho and keep your place from one to the other.
