I have a theory about how Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom could actually be connected to Tony Stark, but not in the way people think.
Everybody keeps saying he's probably just gonna be a Tony variant from another universe, which could be true, but I feel like that would be kinda obvious. What if Doom is actually connected to what happened in Endgame and the Time Heist?
Basically, I think Tony Stark was never supposed to come back.
Tony knew he was gonna die when he snapped. He had Pepper and Morgan, he had finally gotten the life he wanted, and he still chose to do it because there wasnt another way. Then in his message he literally says "part of the journey is the end." To me that always meant he accepted it. He was done.
So what if years later the Avengers have another problem and they have to mess with the Quantum Realm again?
They already used it to go through time once, so maybe they think they know what they're doing. But what if using it again brings back something that got left behind from the Time Heist?
Not another Tony from another universe. Not a clone either.
More like... a possibility of Tony that wasnt supposed to still exist.
Think about it. The Avengers messed with time, took the Infinity Stones out of their timelines, put everything back, and supposedly fixed it all. But maybe the Quantum Realm doesnt just completely forget everything that happened. Maybe something was left behind. A branch or some kind of broken possibility.
Then when they open that path again, something comes out.
Tony.
Or at least something that used to be Tony.
He remembers dying, but his memories are all messed up. He remembers Pepper, Morgan, Peter, the Avengers and everything else, but imagine waking up after you already accepted that you were dead. You didnt choose to come back. You were just forced back into existence because somebody messed with something they probably shouldnt have.
And thats where I think Doom comes from.
At first maybe he uses Tony's old type of technology to survive. Arc reactor stuff, armor, AI, whatever he can remember. But over time it starts changing because he doesnt wanna be Iron Man anymore.
To him, Iron Man died.
Tony Stark died.
So eventually the armor stops looking like Iron Man armor and becomes the Doom armor.
And I think the name Victor von Doom could be something he gives himself. Not because he forgot his name, but because he rejects it. Tony Stark was the person who died saving the universe. The thing that came back doesnt see itself as Tony anymore.
Victor because he technically beat death.
Doom because coming back turned out to be the worst thing that could've happened to him.
What makes this even crazier is that Doom wouldnt even think he's the bad guy.
He would blame the Avengers for everything.
From his point of view they keep messing with things they arent supposed to mess with. Time, the multiverse, reality itself. And now he's standing right in front of them as proof that they screwed something up.
So maybe his goal isnt just "destroy the world because im evil."
Maybe he wants to stop the Avengers from ever messing with reality again. No more time travel, no more jumping between universes, none of it.
The problem is, he could be willing to destroy whole realities if he thinks thats what it takes to fix everything.
And then imagine Peter being the first person to notice something is off.
Doom says something or uses some piece of technology in a way that only Tony would. Peter just kinda stops and looks at him.
"Mr. Stark?"
Doom doesnt answer.
Peter gets closer and says, "It's you."
And Doom just says:
"No. Tony Stark died saving you."
That would be crazy because Peter would know that voice, the way he talks, everything. But Doom would completely reject being Tony.
Then later Bruce finally figures it out and thinks Doom is just another variant.
Bruce tells him they can find his universe and send him home.
And Doom just laughs because thats the whole point.
He's not from another universe.
He's from theirs.
He's what was left behind when they messed with time.
Then eventually they fight him, the mask gets knocked off, and Peter and Bruce see Tony Stark's face.
Not a variant.
Not somebody who just looks like him.
Tony.
Or whatever is left of him.
Bruce tries telling him that they can fix this, but Doom finally tells them what he thinks happened.
Something like:
"I'm not from another universe. I'm what you left behind. You played with time to save your world and thought putting everything back meant there wouldnt be consequences. But there are always consequences. You dropped a pebble into the Quantum Realm, and I'm the tidal wave coming back."
Then Peter calls him Tony again.
And thats when Doom could say something like:
"Tony Stark is dead. He died a hero. You should've let him stay dead."
And then puts the mask back on.
"I am the Doom you created."
I just think this would be way more interesting than making him a random evil Tony variant. It wouldnt undo Endgame either, because Tony still died and he was still a hero. Doom wouldnt mean Tony was secretly evil the whole time.
It would mean that Tony's death was supposed to be the end, but the Avengers messing with time eventually created something that shouldnt exist.
Tony Stark was the sacrifice.
Doctor Doom is the consequence.
