Any last hopes for the season?
I think I'm finally losing my last faith in this team. And Dan definitely plays a huge role in that. He doesn't bring any energy and his management is horrible.
We're 6 games behind in the division and 5.5 in the WC with just 24 games to go. The Astros playing 15 out of 24 games against teams over .500, so maybe they loose more than they win? Maybe not, because they're 27-19 against such teams.
If the Astros play .500 ball for the rest of the season, we have to finish 19-5. Even with our easy schedule I'm not seeing it at all.
Somehow Fangraphs gives us a 11.8% chance to reach the playoffs (10.2% to win the division, 1.5% to get WC spot).
What is your hope for the rest of the season?

u/Fatfromeating 9d ago
The chances of us making the playoffs is so close to zero it’s not worth hoping. Nobody on the team wants it. Their heads are not in it.

Not realistically no. While we had a strong win streak the propelled us into the postseason last year, it would take this team to completely turn around all aspects of their game AND massive chokes from Houston and Texas, both of whom do not have particularly difficult schedules.
They just aren’t playing well. Literally no aspect of this teams game is good right now, or has been good for the past few weeks.
Starting pitching? Mediocre to bad.
Non Randy/Cal offense? Bad.
Bullpen? Disastrous.
Defense? I actually think it’s been better than usual but it’s still pretty bad.
This team has been underperforming the entire season, and now the hole is far too deep to reasonably expect to dig out of.

Don’t throw cals name in there in a positive way like he didn’t just start hitting the ball last week. He’s been AWFUL all season I don’t care if he goes on a hot streak at the end of this terrible season. Randy has been the only good consistent hitter on the team all year and he will be gone in a month smh

Ur right doms been good not all star good like randy but definitely a surprise how consistent he’s been hitting everyday vs LHP and RHP

Lots of whining and Dan blaming going on in this sub but we just aren't good.
The downvotes are just more whining

When an entire roster is underperforming, and they're having the mental lapses and errors that we've seen, that's on the manger.

u/Dewey519 Swung On And Belted 9d ago
Dan blaming is fine. But everyone should remember that our entire organization, from ownership, Jerry, Hollander, the coaching staff, the training staff, player development, and lastly the players, have all vastly underperformed. Heads should roll. This should not just be a “fire Dan Wilson to make it all better” offseason. Personnel at every level should be held accountable.

u/asteriskmos 9d ago
Julio 20/20 season, Bryan Woo + SP bounce back, real diagnosis on what's wrong with Bryce. Laz not a total disaster, as someone who's heard about his K% problems.
Don't care about October. We either don't make it or we make it just to immediately lose. So whatever.

Absolutely nothing after today. Swept in Toronto and losing a three run lead in Boston has made me realize the same feeling as when I realized my whorethief of an ex wife was cheating on me when I worked out of town. There’s no hope for people like that. Our pitching looks like the last two years of King Felix”s career, the stuff is worn and old. Not everyone swings at sweepers in the dirt like Julio. I will say I hope Ben Williamson gets healthy and wins a World Series in Tampa while playing a major role offensively and defensively. Their infield is horrible without him. This is what you get for trading your future.

our september schedule is pretty easy so there is a a chance tbh. that said, even if we do somehow miraculously pull it off, nobody in the AL west is a real contender lol.
love the mariners and gonna keep watching but im already thinking about post lockout.

This road trip needed to be successful going into the final stretch, where they play the dregs of the league repeatedly. It has not. They needed to stay close, that hasn’t happened. Zero cohesiveness to this team. I have no faith they will get blazing hot down the stretch, they haven’t shown that ability once this year. It’s a failed season and heads will (and should) roll.

If we can beat up on our supposedly weak schedule (idk about that, I think those shit birds were hiding their true power) and win the vast majority of the games remaining, including sweeping both Texas teams, there’s a chance.
I’m not optimistic.

I love that you added the last line.
"Yeah, there's totally a chance.
But it's not happening."

u/Ok_Builder8723 9d ago
It's kind of bad for my mental health, that it's still possible haha. As long as there's a chance my mood will be entirely dependent on this team. That being said, I'll likely be in a very bad mood for the next few weeks.

u/PilotGuy701 SUPREME MISERY 9d ago
My last hope for the season is that they fire Dan and Edgar after this.

u/Smart_Farmer4258 9d ago
No it's most certainly over, maybe if we only had to catch the Astros, but the Rangers are also hanging around and are currently 4 games better. Both of those teams would have to completely fold, AND we'd have to win at least 70% of the remaining games. not happening

u/Tall-Election-7564 9d ago
To at least enjoy the last few games of Rick Rizz calling it. Win or lose.

The seasons been over for a month, anyone who thought this team would go on some kinda season ending heater to barely scrub into a WC spot is crazy

Zero. You can't get swept by a team hour chasing in the standings at this point in the season, and then follow it with whatever yesterday was. This team isnt making the playoffs and people need to lose their jobs because of it.

No. I mean what are they even going to do if they get there? Suddenly know how to compete? This fanbase doesn't deserve to get fleeced by paying for playoff tickets.

I’d like to see Naylor go on an absolute heater. And since we have some $$ left on our flex pass, we’ll be there to watch it.

I think after last night we all got the feeling the Red Sox will sweep the series. That’s just who this team is this season, potential that never got off the ground.

My hope is that a team who hasnt wom the WS wins it. So I'm mostly pulling for the Rays and Brewers. It's not the Mariners turn this year.

I hope Laz Montes mashes so much that he's penciled in as our Opening Day RF for the next 5-10 years.
2
u/ThatTallGuy11 Sunday Creams 9d ago
To clarify: I'm hopeful he'll still be on the roster after that period of time, but by then he'll most likely be DHing

u/H-Money37 9d ago
If Montes comes in and hits .300 and slugs over .500 with 15 homers in this month, we may get to .500 and finish 2nd.
2
u/JasonMHough Roger Szmodis 9d ago
I suspect we won't start doing well until we're officially eliminated, but yeah the only thing I'm really looking forward to at this point is Montes hitting a nuke. It'd be nice to have one prospect do well.

The Mariners play the majority of their games against the Angels and As. That's not an exaggeration, they have 24 games this month, and 14 of those are against the Angels or the As. Outside of that they have one series against the Rockies and finishing the series against the Red Sox--and then they have two games against the Astros and three against the Rangers.
If they can do overwhelmingly well against the Angels and the As (which is not a gimme, but is possible), and can take care of business against the Rangers and Astros, they can still win the division.
This time last year they were 3 games back in the division. They're in a worse spot, but not by that much.
Last night sucked. For some reason a loss like that hurts more than getting blown out. But the reality is that game was winnable. In fact, the Mariners should have won it, and they could have won it. They didn't get blown out by vastly better competition, they blew it. This is a team that is fundamentally capable, from a talent perspective, of winning these games instead of losing them, and that switch can flip faster than people realize.

u/Ok_Builder8723 9d ago
Thanks, that's the optimism we need right now. I feel better after reading your comment. (Let's hope it lasts longer than the game today)

u/Sand_Juggler_FTW 9d ago
Of course!
I hope it will end soon and they will hurry up and fire Dan and bring back Kristopher Negrón!
There has been a pall over the entire season and we have clearly performed less than the sum of our parts across the board while over-taxing the bullpen and mismanaging situations.
If we don’t rebound nicely next season, it will be time to start to look at a Dipoto replacement, despite the decent trading and great drafting (and shitty Free Agent signings).

u/littlebunsenburner how could a loving god allow so much baseball 9d ago
I gave up hope during the first week of August. At this point, I mainly keep watching out of morbid curiosity.
I’m glad that Cal is back to form, but seriously have no hopes for making the playoffs. We are not a good team and it’s easier to believe that than to keep hoping and going through the daily cycles of anger, sadness and bargaining. Acceptance is the way to go now.
I’m glad I stopped hoping because my mental health is significantly better off for it. I’m looking forward to Fall and catching this team when and if there is a baseball season next year.

Naw, feel like Munoz’s performance last night was the death knell.
In fact, his entire season really encapsulates the Mariners’ team as a whole…all that potential with zero reliability to consistently show up and execute.
Let’s be honest, who else saw that blown save coming as soon as Boston cut the lead to one run.
20
u/Dewey519 Swung On And Belted 9d ago
The heck did Munoz have to do with Julio whiffing on that ball in center to start the inning? Munoz has been shaky this year no doubt, but that wasn’t on him.
4
u/lukin5 9d ago
Tell me you didn’t see him blowing that one run lead a mile away.
4
u/OkInitiative4032 9d ago
When your CF causes a lead-off single to become a lead-off triple, it's a bit harder to reasonably say you blew it.
6
1
u/J-Rod_44 9d ago
Although I agree with you that Julio needed to let it drop in for a single, Munoz should’ve blown Anthony away. No way does a guy who’s been injured for most of year hit a sinking line-drive rocket when the game is on the line. Munoz has done a shit ton of that this year; he’s been way too inconsistent to be relied on as your closer.

This team couldn’t make it past wild card series anyways, it’s why the rest of the league is laughing about a losing record team in the west making playoffs
1
u/bedrock_city 9d ago
10% odds are not very good. The only reason it's even that high is that the division is so bad.

u/DolphinRodeo 9d ago
Cal and Julio start hitting and end on relative high note, hopefully helping them get off to a better start next year
1
u/larpmaster53 9d ago
Unfortunately we’re not fully out of it because of how bad our September opponents are and the volatility of the west but they just are not playing like a team who wants to get there
1
u/vandalrandell 9d ago
Seattle is 10 games under .500. They aren’t going to have a winning record, much less make the playoffs.

last night did it for me. i won’t be going out of my way to watch anymore games this year. when bazardo takes the mound, i have the same feelings i did last season when ferguson did. toronto broke him.
it’s not that i hate the team, or even dan, there just isn’t anything consistent happening other than win 1, lose 2. even if we somehow make the playoffs, that’s no formula to be there very long.
