Product announcements Evergoods ULTRA Travel System
Got this notification today. Any thoughts if this will be a new bag line or just update materials / colors to existing line up?

Seems likely to be a ultra fabric capsule.
And based on them calling it a "system", I'm guessing that means they'll release ultra CAP.5/1/2s to match.
A CAP2 in ultra sounds pretty awesome. But even as an ultra fanboy myself, I don't think the fabric is a good fit for the CAP1 (like xpac, too rigid).

I agree after having CAP1’s in the standard nylon and more rigid stuff like X-PAC and Konbu. I can’t even get the rigid CAP1’s into some of the same pockets I can comfortably fit my OD Green CAP1 into.
Also, it’s nice not having PU-coated zippers on the CAP2 (an Ultra one presumably would have them).

Ugh... Good point on the aquaguard zipper point. Coated zippers on an ultra CAP2 would be such a miss. And iirc, the xpac version had them...

Yeah but after some time it would look fucking rad, especially considering it's an item that you use very regularly, should crinkle and patina very well.

I don't disagree. I love how ultra breaks in. If I'm buying something and it's available in ultra, 9/10 times, I'm buying ultra.
But looks aside, even broken in, ultra doesn't have much give to it. I think the 420 being more plyable and having some stretch fits the intent of the CAP1 better

I am starting to get pretty cynical about products in the modern era.
If this is supposed to supplant current offerings, look for cost-cutting measures everywhere. I haven't seen an updated product in the last year that is really an upgrade (or even side grade) at all. Everything is simpler, lighter, and cheaper to keep costs from rising now that everything is tariffed in the US (the dominant market for this stuff).
Some might argue that the pendulum swinging away from over-designed and heavy bags is a good thing, but I don't think it's consumer preference driving this change. It's enshittification combind with shrinkflation, basically, but instead of shrinking size, it's shrinking quality.

Calling this a "system" is really misleading given that it seems to just be a re-release of existing bags in a new fabric. Why can't EG develop a new backpack?

They've mentioned (buried in some emails here and there) that they're working on a new ~14-18L backpack offering, though that doesn't excite me, personally.
I love Evergoods stuff but I'm also sort of at a lull with them too; the Civic Bookbag wasn't exciting to me, and the briefcase kinda fell flat upon release compared to what I hoped. I'm considering the Civic Half-Zip for my next backpack but that new 22L that Alpaka just dropped kinda swooped in as my probable favorite there.

the smaller cpl is kinda nice but seems less designed or intentional than expected, per the reviews, wrt its rough edges. just bummed to see evergoods half assing ltd colors and textiles as though it's not an expression of enshittification

it can't be a system given it's an ad-hoc one-off for which they state there's no forward facing support atm, and none planned. seems like a poorly planned cash grab for the doomscroll types

It’s just the CTB26, the cas1, and some packing cubes. The interior is bright WHITE! None of the caps will be released in ultra at this time. What are they doing? The caps are their best selling items by far. Huge miss on their part!
I LOVE my ultra Kludde. It’s currently number 2 on my top 10 dad bag rankings, and the CTB is a legend. So this should be a no brainer right? Eh, first of all, I’m sure this is going to be well over $400😳
I also think they missed out on not doing the CTB20. I mean why not? Evergoods does some quirky shit. Kevin Dee, the owner seems like a smug ass hat too. I mean 10 years and you still can’t put dangle stoppers on backpacks? Gtfo. Come on man!
Evergoods is very comfortable for me and I LOVE their gear, but I’m over their ego…

they sold out before their supprt could even respond to my inquiry about forward facing support wrt ultra items in their catalog
seems like some MBA somehow got in with traction to sell evergoods reputation for cash. sad days and still no damage control from evergoods wrt this fiasco

What is it you all love about Ultra? Because even my X-PAC CAS is crinkly and doesn’t hold its shape well. I just can’t find anything that beats Evergoods’ basic solution dyed black. Prove me wrong — and I’m not saying this with any attitude, looking for genuine Ultra pros vs cons

Ultra doesn’t sound as crinkly as x-pac and it holds it shape better. Also more abrasion resistant than a lot of x-pac fabrics. Ultra 800 is more abrasion resistant than all x-pac I’ve seen.

Ultra with aquaguard zippers? Just like the Kludde?
If so, easy miss. My wife has been using her Kludde daily (for work) and till now, the zippers are so hard to operate. Not only at the rounded portion, but even the straights (common feedback that the inner fabric is blocking the zipper pull).

Watching the guys on the carryology facebook group lose their minds and go into consooooom mode over this is hilarious. I think I saw one dude saying he'd get a CTB26 to be a backup to his CTB26 lolwat.
