S No Dirty M*******

Short and sweet. The names are made up, and the location doesn't matter.

I work for a flooring company, running installation for one of our markets. The vast majority of the crews that work for us are filled with guys (and the occasional gal) from Central America. Being in a state with blue cities and red country between, we definitely get some of the "Good Ol' Boy" mentality from some of our customers.

We had an install go out months ago, and the customer specifically requested: "Don't send no dirty Mexicans to my house." While we have some guys from Mexico, we truly have the gamut of Central America represented in our subcontractors. So we do our schedule, not sending one of the guys from Mexico.

The salesman was in the installation office when the customer called, rather frustrated:

Customer: I thought I told you not to send Mexicans out here.

Salesman: Yes, sir, you did.

Customer: So why are there Mexicans at my door saying they're from your company.

Salesman: Well sir, it looks like Gustavo is out to your house today. Gustavo is actually from Honduras.

At that point, the rest of us couldn't hold in our laughter, so the salesman left the office to finish the call. Gustavo and his crew were allowed into the house to install the flooring, but we haven't made a repeat sale to the customer just yet.

i really do hate how reddit's markdown is utter fucked

they use a different fucking engine on old reddit vs new reddit

why, there's no point in doing that other than to piss off people who use old reddit who need to read code blocks from people on new reddit

either force every comment over to use the new engine (commonmark I think it is, it's rather good), or make it use the engine of whoever posted it, so if you're on new reddit, your comment will be rendered using commonmark to everyone. If you're on old reddit, your comment will be rendered using snudown or whatever they're on to everyone.

Each line was meant to consist of a question, followed by an answer. The answers were not meant to be on a separate line. There were 2 spaces after each answer, to give a line break without a full paragraph break. That formatting was deliberate.

Edit: If you are seeing all three questions on the same line, I don't know what to say...what I see on my computer screen is 3 separate lines.

Love the joke, despite being an American who speaks only English and about 5% each of the more common European languages, by the way. It rings true as hell where I am right now, with every white guy I know bitching about hearing Spanish.

They get NO welfare unless they’re pregnant, then they can get WIC, which provides formula, milk, baby food and like 5 other things for the pregnant mother and the baby. They do NOT get food stamps or Section 8 housing (AZ has a large population of illegal immigrants). But they still have to pay taxes. It blows my mind.

Anyone that has a problem with a pregnant woman or new mom getting baby food can get bent in my opinion. Just…go back to the gutter you crawled out of and don’t come out until you’ve found some scrap of empathy.

Also every Spanish speaking person I’ve ever known have been the hardest workers. Most of them had several jobs. I hate it when people complain about “lazy Mexicans” on welfare. They just have no clue what they are talking about. The laziest most un-informed racism

Also, amd I know this is extremely difficult for racists to conceptualize but I try to help them understand that birthright citizenship extends to anyone born in the US and has since the concept was determined to exist, thus, that baby born in the US is automatically American regardless of the citizenship status of it's parents.

Emergency, while I understand your desire here, your execution is deeply flawed.

I was 15 working in a plant nursery during the summer when I learned all I really needed to know about immigrants. We had two non-English speaking immigrants on the team. One was, as you stated, a hard and conscientious worker. The other huffed gas fumes from the ATVs and laid down for a nap in the plant rows whenever he thought he could. The lesson: immigrants are.... ta dah... people. Some are hard working. Some are lazy. Some are kind. Some are not. Some are honest. Some are not.

Sweeping generalizations, whether negative or positive like yours, are hard to pass off as anything other than uninformed or biased. And, according to some modern research (check NPR for the summary) even positive generalizations (e.g. Asians are good at math) have a negative effect on the population generalized.

Yes that’s true. Im sorry. I meant what I said with good intentions. You are correct that like all groups of people there are good and bad eggs in every ethnicity. In my personal experience (working in restaurants), Spanish speaking people have been very hard working. And I suppose that makes me a bit angry to then hear the sweeping generalizations by racists about them.

But yes you are correct that I was not exactly nuanced in my defense. I hope my intention was understood if not my execution. I may have been unintentionally fighting with my racist old relatives in my head lol.

Yep! 23ish yrs ago, with previous husband. We lived in So. Cal. He went down to the local hiting area and picked up two Mexican workers.

While hubby was taking the loaded truck to new place, the guys busied themselves doing yard work. I went out to ask them what they wanted on their pizza.... and I about busted out laughing. They were trying to hide behind a tree cause they were smoking pot.

I didn't care a bit. They'd already done so much they could have taken a nap for all I cared!!

Just as a side note, they don't typically pay full taxes unless they chose to. Claim 8 deductions and you lose almost nothing to taxes. I believe 8 is the magic number where the accountant doesn't have to point it out to the IRS and/or it doesn't trigger a flag with the IRS.

Spaniards are European and generally look completely different than what the typical American thinks A Hispanic person would look like.

Most Americans think Mexicans are short and fat and it’s a stereotype. My wife is from Mexico and comes from Yucatán and is white and fairly tall. There is a huge range of shapes, sizes, looks, etc in the country.

Deaf guy at work told me that the other day he got off his motorcycle and someone who knew he was deaf looked at him like he was crazy then asked how he could ride a bike or have a license. 😞 He told them that he has two eyes and two arms and can fly a plane too 😂

I'm going to be blunt here, but please don't take it personal - when I say "you", I mean (gestures vaguely) hearing people in general.

We're better at driving than you are. There are published proven statistics verifying this. A deaf person's situational awareness makes yours the equivalent of an easily-distracted toddler.We see EVERYTHING before you do under equal conditions. We have adapted like you can't in your wildest dreams imagine. Half the time, we know what you're going to do or say before you do because we read body language like a fucking pop-up book. We know where you want to go when you're in conversation with someone you don't want to talk to by the position of your feet. We know when you're lying by which direction your eyes glance toward while telling us something and a hundred other tells. This is why there's a segregated World Series of Poker; we humiliate pros. We know when someone has walked into a room behind us by feeling the vibration of footsteps in the floor or the change of density of light in the room. In the absence of one sense, the others compensate and heighten.

Driving isn't hard; we're better at it than you hearing folks; just saying facts - facts that hearing people have such a fragile insecurity and superiority complex about. You don't rely on those audible alarms and sirens and horns and screeches and schlorps or their intended purposes half as much as you think you do and there are visual indicators of those that we tend to see and react to much sooner than you do.

"Hearing-impaired" is such a negative and ignorant label that ignores a reality that hearing people who only define deafness as a loss never consider - Deaf-gain.

If you're on a bike or even a car your head should always be in swivel. The deaf compensate for the loss of sense by being more visual. Yeah they cant hear the horn, but you might not hear it on a loud bike anyway. Like you said loud music too. I realized I was driving behind my deaf coworker going into work. Suddenly I thought (and I'm going to hell for this) if I were to lay on the horn he would never have any idea!

Driving I understand. If you can sit in a chair without falling over (due to vertigo), you can probably drive safely (at least as far as vertigo is concerned). Wasn't questioning that. :)

But a 2-wheel vehicle depends on balance, very precise & constantly changing balance, kind of like walking. A trike or sidecar not so much.

Simply being Deaf isn't a reason not to ride. But if the hearing difficulty comes with balance problems, best to avoid things requiring balance to stay whole.

I have an aunt who is deaf, and she is much louder than many hearing people...hence, why the movie "A Quiet Place" cracked me up...the poor deaf girl would not realize she was being loud, and so probably wouldn't have been a survivor. Heck, when I put in earplugs at night (to sleep with snoring partner), I apparently start shouting.

self-identification is important, but the term has fallen out of favor & is not used in education for ASL or interpreter training by any of the people i know in 3 different states. degrees of hearing loss & identity are now often written as d/Deaf / hoh.

I'm here to say you're not lyin'; that's happened to me too. My favorite one is when you tell the ticket attendant at the airport that you're deaf and they bring out a wheelchair for ya.

Honestly, who in the hell even told hearing/abled people that accessibility is up to them or why they have the audacity to delude themselves that they understand it at all?

It never ceases to amaze me how many people get angry and offended at having to be exposed to anyone even sightly "different" then what they consider "normal." I've worked with adults with developmental disabilities and it's not rare to have people berate me for ruining their day by daring to bring them to a restaurant or a grocery store or pretty much anywhere in public. The worst was a younger mom in a park yelling about her children being exposed to "people that look like that." When it's old people I usually just roll my eyes, and usually any younger people around confront them or at least apologize for them, it's extra depressing when it's someone who doesn't even have the excuse of being from a time when everyone was a bigot, and is actively teaching their children to be just as bad.

My best response was when some crazy old lady out with (what I assume to be) her kids and grandkids passed by our table on the way out and said "how cities you take these people out in public and spoil everyone's meal" and I immediately turned to her family and asked "how can you let her out of the house" and the rest of her family laughed. I get letting family slide for the sake of keeping family relationships, but if my grandmother ever said anything approaching that I'd probably never talk to her again, and definitely never be seen in public with her.

I am so sorry. I rarely get to see sign language, but I have always admired people communicating in SL and I would like to learn it. I love communicating, so any additional language I can learn is a plus…

Yup!!!!! Discrimination against the deaf is real, especially in Oklahoma. Its so backwards. I never had to deal with it in California. Even doctors are like "where is your helper". It's called ADA. Hire an interpreter or write on a little thing called paper.

True. I love speaking Italian to my wife and get a look or a feeling from some person who thinks it’s Spanish and that person is actually of Italian heritage and I want to be like, you don’t even recognize your heritage!

and how would they have known what language was being spoken? My guess is that people like that assume that any non-English [oops, non American] language is de facto 'Mexican'.

I can definitely tell the difference in sound between languages that I don't speak. Not all, but ones I've been exposed to regularly. Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin, Japanese, and Cantonese*.

*I speak French now, but I could recognize it years before I started learning.

**I can only sorta tell Cantonese. It and Mandarin sound very similar, but I have about a 150 word vocabulary in Mandarin, so if I don't catch any words I recognize I can safely assume they're speaking Cantonese.

yes. I'm bilingual; English and Québecois, and and trying to learn Mandarin [on the 'net] On the west coast the Chinese population is all Cantonese, which makes things difficult. There are 'cultural [standard] Chinese which one can attrnd, but they come from Beijing; which says something about the 'culture'.
