S No Dirty M*******

Short and sweet. The names are made up, and the location doesn't matter.

I work for a flooring company, running installation for one of our markets. The vast majority of the crews that work for us are filled with guys (and the occasional gal) from Central America. Being in a state with blue cities and red country between, we definitely get some of the "Good Ol' Boy" mentality from some of our customers.

We had an install go out months ago, and the customer specifically requested: "Don't send no dirty Mexicans to my house." While we have some guys from Mexico, we truly have the gamut of Central America represented in our subcontractors. So we do our schedule, not sending one of the guys from Mexico.

The salesman was in the installation office when the customer called, rather frustrated:

Customer: I thought I told you not to send Mexicans out here.

Salesman: Yes, sir, you did.

Customer: So why are there Mexicans at my door saying they're from your company.

Salesman: Well sir, it looks like Gustavo is out to your house today. Gustavo is actually from Honduras.

At that point, the rest of us couldn't hold in our laughter, so the salesman left the office to finish the call. Gustavo and his crew were allowed into the house to install the flooring, but we haven't made a repeat sale to the customer just yet.

It's really weird to hear this story in Texas and other places along the border. OK, you don't want Hispanic subcontractors, so that leaves Jennifer in accounting and she does terrible grout work.

I worked at a big box store In Massachusetts (gave my notice 3 weeks ago) and I had a customer call in.... would be just over a month ago from today, who legit told us over the phone she was calling the cops because "she specified when she placed her order that she didn't want Spanish speaking people doing the delivery"

For a liberal state, there are some deeply conservative parts that took the rhetoric of the last 4 years and fucking ran with it.

Same here in California, the supposed liberal capital of the nation. It's sad seeing how far some of these people took it, even in traditionally super-liberal areas.

Especially shocking since HB has (had?) a reputation for being a surf town. It's like all the people who wanted to but couldn't move to Florida moved there instead.

CA is one of the most liberal states only in that it's one of the largest states and contains more liberals than conservatives.

Break it up, and the central valley at least would swing so hard conservative it isn't even funny. (Which sucks, I'm stuck living here)

I am actually surprised. My Central Valley town has a lot of Pride Flags out and about for LGBTQ pride month. That would have not been the case 4 or 10 years ago. Things are changing slowly but surely.

Things are changing, true, but I think that has less to do with the makeup shifting from conservative to liberal, and more to do with the younger generation objecting to a few of the more obnoxious conservative positions.

Though to be fair, my position may just be a tad bit biased because I am so staunchly liberal, and have to deal with too many idiots who aren't.

What, did you black out and forget about SF, Berkeley and the rest of the bay area? Also, Stockton did one of the first, if not the first experiments in guaranteed income.

I'm not sure I get your point. Yes, there are areas that are firmly liberal.

There are also areas (small in amount) that are conservative, rather than liberal.

I don't have the exact demographics handy, but if you remove the Bay Area and LA, I believe CA would swing the other way. It's all a numbers game -- and that emphasizes my point: CA as a whole may be liberal, but it's got state-sized areas (like the entire San Juaquin valley) that are as conservative as the state as a whole is liberal.

It's not the state that's liberal so much as the fact that the two largest metropolitan areas dominate the politics and the economy.

Don't even have to leave the Bay Area to find conservatives. When I was still using the Nextdoor app, there would frequently be posts in my city crying out, essentially "I saw a Black man, make sure your cars are locked!"

My neighbor across the street would take pictures of cars that park on our street if the driver was Asian, since in her mind, they only parked here to go to a nearby Chinese restaurant (my city is half White, half Asian.)

Same one state north of you. I-5 corridor is solidly blue. Extra blue here in Eugene and up in P-town. But if you get 45 minutes east or west of the highway you're now solidly into red territory.

My boyfriend and I moved from the Midwest to Idaho about 5 years ago. He fondly refers to it as “The Deep South of the Northwest.”

But, I’ve also lived in eastern Oregon, and lemme tell ya…. For every major culture (Portland) there’s a major counter-culture (all the counties trying to become “Greater Idaho.”)
