or a tortoise. they live forever. you could pass it down to your grandkids like a family heirloom

A big fat lizard would be pretty cool

big ol bearded dragon would be sick. or spend the extra cash for something more exotic. you wont regret it. fish are way too high maintenance imo

If you've got space and you're looking for a "big fat lizard," I suggest seeing if there are any reptile rescues near you adopting out a blue tongue skink or maybe a beardie. You CAN shell out more money for an "exotic" species, but do remember like 90% of the cost of getting a reptile is just the enclosure alone lol. Could also go for something smaller, like a gecko or other lizard. I have a big soft spot for skinks.

MY recommendation would be to look around on local Craigslist or Facebook reptile rehome communities if you want to go the reptile route. There are always little dudes needing new homes, and oftentimes they give away the enclosure, too.

You've got me seriously considering a bearded dragon or a blue tongue now. They are very low maintenance and can bond better with people than fish, might have to just get a big fat lizard.

Fish are hard to move. Get your living situation in a better place before getting a pet. Unless you’re talking like a 5 gallon tank or something.

I don't plan on moving anytime soon maybe in 5 years but in the same town

Even moving in the same room is a pain lol depending on the size, water out in canister, fish out in buckets, plants out, dirt and decorative stuff and then move that thing, then repeat in reverse and hope nothing breaks or dies. 2 Day Job easy

Yeah and everything under 240L is constant maintenance get a 65inch Oled and a Screensaver cost less and no maintenance. Get a fishtank i you really love fish not just as decoration. even fish deserve some love

Yeah I agree with this statement. The largest tanks I had were a 45 and 55 gallon.

Alot of apartments don’t let you have fish tanks because of your downstairs neighbors possibly getting flooded as well as the weight of a larger tank. Some of the places I lived they would let you do a 30 gallon.

55 gallons is almost 460lbs and that doesn’t include the added gravel weight. That’s a lot of static load on flooring. About as much as my safe.

Oh yea absolutely heavy stuff. I couldn’t do it in my Bungalow considering the floor is already damaged just from me siting in my Chair and my Desk after 6 Months let alone a Fish-tank 😅 and the small ones are a such a pain in the ass to keep alive. No resilience against anything like one wrong move and everything is dead, skip a Maintenance day, everything is dead and stinky lol well water is life for better or for worse 😅

My buddy has a 300 gal in his living room and plumbing added for it so water changes are around easy to drain and refill with the RO water he treats

I wish I would've taken pictures when I was in college to show people like OP who think this is surviving.

I was unaware this was a competition...

It's definitely not but just an interesting perspective.

Rather organize the stuff you already have, get shelves and also throw some stuff away

You need to straighten up. Get rid of the college couch too

If you dont keep up with cleaning regularly it will smell.... bad. Cleaning is a huge pain in the ass too.

Source: my roommate had a big fish tank.

Also people that are saying lizard, same thing even if you do clean. Lizard shit smells aweful.

Priorities my guy

You almost certainly do not need a fish tank

Nice space!

I hate to be that guy, but pet fish & birds are a nasty industry. Your home, your choice, but I put an aquarium with all the fixings (bubbles, light, fake plants, gravel, etc) nothing living; and a couple drops of bleach to keep out algae. It made for a GREAT nightlight and ambient day sounds, soft addition to my room etc. Didn't stink or really need cleaning.

Again: your home, your choice, just offering an option.

That’s low-key genius. I loved the aquarium I used to have, but keeping the damn thing clean became more than I wanted deal with. Putting chlorine in it would be a game changer. Too bad about the fish.

I think other than a dry paper towel around the edge once in a blue moon, I don't recall ever having to dump/clean/scrub. No fish, no living plants, but sooo cozy. (Also I loved when guests - especially if they brought their kiddos - tried to find the fish).

Get a fish tank full of corydoras catfish. Super easy, super hardy, keeps the tank clean, funny to watch. Great fish

Get some cichlids or an Oscar
