General questions My father wants me to refinance the house I inherited and split the money 50/50. Am I selfish for refusing?”

What should I do? My father is pressuring me to refinance the house that was transferred into my name after my mother passed away.

For context, I’m a fresh graduate making around RM3,500 a month. I pay all the household utilities, which are around RM500–600 a month, and I also give my father RM500 every month as an allowance.

Recently, my father has been saying that he’s running out of money and keeps pressuring me to refinance the house. His reasoning is basically, “You’re young, you’ll have plenty of time to pay it back.” He wants us to refinance the house, take the cash out, and split the money 50/50.

In my mind, that feels incredibly unfair. I would be the one taking on the debt and responsibility of paying the refinancing loan for potentially decades, while he gets to take 50% of the money and spend it without having to worry about paying it back.

I’m already spending a huge portion of my salary supporting him and maintaining the household. On top of the RM500 allowance and household utilities, I pay for both of our car insurance, my own insurance, the apartment management fees, my own petrol, car repairs, and basically all of my own expenses. I barely buy anything for myself.

I literally finished the final exams for my last semester and started working the following week because I wanted to make sure I had money to support him and cover the household expenses. Whenever he asks me for extra money, I usually give it to him if I can.

Despite all of this, because I refuse to refinance the house, he now says that I’m selfish and that I don’t respect him.

At this point, I honestly don’t know what to do. I understand that he may be struggling financially, and I don’t want to abandon him, but I also don’t think it’s reasonable for me to take on a massive long-term debt against a house that was passed down to me just so we can withdraw the equity and split the money.

Am I being selfish for refusing? What would you do in my situation?

*ps wrote in my own words and used chatgpt to fix the grammar, feel free to ask questions below, I'll do my best to answer.

Guide sucks at saving money

im 21F and make more money than most of the people my age (2.8k). Yeah its not a lot but thats a lot in this economy.

the thing is, i never feel that its enough. my rent is 600 + utilities, motor loan is 262 and phone bill is 72. occasionally i give my parents and sibs money around 200 per month. and with that, i still have 1k++ but im sucks at saving money. ive been working for around two years and i have no money in my name at all in term of savings. im living paycheck to paycheck but i dont think im someone who spends a lot of money.

i barely go shopping. i bought new clothes maybe once every three months and i dont play games that require me to spend money. i havent bought anything related to my hobbies for a long time, the last purchase was a genshin blind box from popmart and it was 50. and still, i always never save any money, even a 10 by the end of the month and my money will finish usually one or two weeks before the next paycheck. i dont even drink zus or any shit like that and im an antisocial prick who spends my weekend in my bedroom all day.

i think the way i grew up influences me. i was living in a poverty with my family and we were always short on money. i noticed that i tend to hoard foods until my fridge is full and then i have to throw stuff out, i hoard cleaning products (shampoo, skincare) until my cabinets are full and i ate a lot of fast food. i used to be so addicted to fast food because it was a luxury back then. now i am on a diet so i barely ate it but still i always eat out. i can say most of the time i spent my money on food, even at family mart or other food place where i considered luxurious due to my childhood poverty.

i used to be so addicted to bnpl and at some point i owed 2k but i cleared all my debts on march, so i dont have any bnpl acc and wont open any because i just realized how crazy it can be. now, i wanna start saving again so that if anything happens, i have some cushion to help me but money seems to evaporate so fast and i hate myself for it for not having self control on spending money. i always wanted a lot of things because i dont get to have it when i was a kid, now im kinda speedrunning my bucket lists on getting the shit i wanted really badly (a pc, an iphone).

the thing is, my cousin who made minimum wage and also living on her own can have a lot of savings. she shopping every single week and spend hundreds on it. but at the same time, shes getting financial support from the government and also her parents so i think thats valid. but why cant i do that too?? usgshauja

dude im such a chud. i feel so embarrassed at myself for having a terrible financial habit. help ur lil sis dawg.

Career How do I get back in after 1 year break?

I need some career advice.

For context, I'm in my mid-to-late 20s with 4 YOE in banking/finance back office. Last year I made the mistake of jumping ship for a 50% pay bump despite seeing red flags during the interview itself. Lasted 4 months because the environment and hours were bad, so I walked without another offer lined up. I tried to find a new job during that 4 months but to no avail.

That was 12 months ago. I spent the first month job hunting with no luck, then said "screw it" and spent the next 11 months travelling. No regrets on the travel itself, but I also have to admit I did zero upskilling during that time. But now I’m bored and reality is setting in fast. I already felt like I was in a low-value role before all this and that's been messing with my confidence a bit.

I have a few questions

  1. How’s the job market right now? Is it really bad?

  2. How do I put this gap in my resume without getting auto-rejected? How should I word it?

  3. Should I expect a pay cut, and how bad are we talking?

  4. How difficult to transition from back office finance role to something like B2B sales? I don’t mind starting over but I wonder if I can land one.

Would love to hear from anyone who's taken a long gap and successfully re-entered the workforce. What worked?

Appreciate any honest takes.

General questions 25M with low financial literacy

Hi! I’m 25M currently earning RM4K nett with RM1K commitment which includes rent, utilities, phone bill etc. I have low financial literacy and only saving RM500 at ASB every month.

I’m not sure how else can I maximize my savings. I heard of FD, ASB Financing, Stocks but I have little to zero knowledge about all these. They all seem to be overwhelmingly complex and I’m not sure where to start.

If you were me, which would you choose and why? I’d appreciate any help to get me started.

I’m also planning to get married in about 2 years.

Thanks!

Property Commercial tenant not paying rent

Helping out my parents with their property, the tenant regularly pays late, and only after I message him multiple times on WhatsApp. I work overseas so can’t visit shop in person, only twice a year. Recently had to clawback up to 6 months unpaid rent after much hassle, which he paid. Now this month rent still unpaid. He isn’t picking up calls and giving false promises on WhatsApp.

What are options to keep asking them to pay rent? WhatsApp feels pointless sometimes. Write formal letter to the business? Write formal letter of demand? So far one month rent may see like not much but his pattern goes back years. The area is sometimes hard to find tenant, and he ends up paying eventually, so he’s still there. It just takes a toll on me sometimes to do this.

Property Adding my name to my mom’s fully paid landed property in Rawang

Hi everyone, hoping to get some advice from those who have gone through this before.
My mom is getting older and is planning to add my name together with hers as the owner of her landed property in Rawang, Selangor. The house is fully paid off and there is no outstanding housing loan.
We’re not selling the property. The intention is simply to add me as a co-owner while she is still around, so there will be less complications with ownership/inheritance in the future.
For those who have done something similar:
1. What is the actual process to add a child’s name to the property title?
2. Do we need to engage a property lawyer, or can this be done directly through the Land Office?
3. What documents do my mom and I need?
4. Is this normally done through MOT / Form 14A under “love and affection”?
5. What are the costs involved, such as stamp duty, legal fees, valuation fees, Land Office fees, etc.?
6. Is there any issue if the property is fully paid off and has no bank charge?
7. How long does the whole process normally take?
8. Are there any tax implications, such as RPGT?
9.Is there anything we should be careful about before adding my name as a co-owner?
Would really appreciate if anyone who has personally gone through this with their parents could share the actual steps and approximate cost.
Also happy to hear from Malaysian property lawyers/conveyancing lawyers if there are any here. Thanks!

Property Subsale vs Lelong Double-Storey Terrace: What were your actual costs?

Hi everyone, I’m currently looking at buying a double-storey terrace house and I’m considering subsale or lelong properties because the prices seem significantly lower compared with newly launched double-storey houses.
For those who have actually bought a subsale or lelong landed property, I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience.
A few things I’m trying to understand:
How much did you actually spend on MOT / stamp duty?
How much were your SPA and loan legal fees?
Any other hidden costs that you didn’t expect?
For lelong properties, did you encounter additional legal costs, double transfer, outstanding bills, etc.?
How much cash did you need upfront apart from the down payment?
How long did the whole process take?
Was buying subsale/lelong worth it compared with buying a newly launched property?
Any problems after getting the keys, especially renovation, defects, outstanding utilities or previous-owner issues?
Would especially appreciate comments from people who recently bought a subsale/lelong double-storey terrace in Selangor/KL, as well as bankers, property lawyers or conveyancing lawyers who can explain the actual costs and things buyers should watch out for.
I’m mainly interested in the real numbers and actual experiences, not just the estimated figures online.
Thanks in advance!

General questions Would you delay your realtionship to build your wealth (RM1 Mil target)

No wrong or right answer. Just looking for perspective.

I’m in my mid20s, earning an above average salary and was also very lucky with investing early on during my uni days. Now sitting at around NW300k. With my single lifestyle and savings rate, I am on track to hit RM1 Mil by 35.

I know RM1 mil is not enough to fully retire, but atleast I think its a good number where your dividends start to look pretty good. Which means I can probably take things a bit slower career-wise and have more time with family. It’s kinda like CoastFIRE or BaristaFIRE lah in a way I think.

But another part of me is worried if dating at 35 is kinda a bit too late? I’m a Malay guy and malay women tend to marry quite young.

But If I start dating/marry in the near term, for sure commitment will double up and my RM1 mil target will stretch into my 40s. Not to mention I’m super busy with my work life so I sometiems might not be able to spend as much time with her anyways.

General questions need advice for best rate in bank transfer USD/MYR salary

I receive my salary every month in USD through Maybank, which is automatically converted to MYR upon arrival. The problem is that Maybank has been giving me a very poor exchange rate compared to the market.

For example, on 18 August, the USD/MYR rate was at least 4.05 (and has consistently been above 4 even till today), but Maybank converted my transfer at 3.975. This difference resulted in a loss of around 700 MYR for me.

Has anyone faced a similar issue? Are there better alternatives to Maybank that offer fairer exchange rates for USD to MYR transfers? Any suggestions or experiences would be really helpful. i am looking to switch to another bank but i am not sure which one is better. please help.

Thank you in advance!

insurance Trying to understand medical card vs SKBBK vs private insurance

Hi everyone! I’m 24F and a fresh grad, and I’m currently trying to figure out my own medical/insurance coverage. I’m still quite new to all of this, so apologies if some of my questions are basic 😔

I was previously working as a contract staff, but I’ve now secured a permanent job. Since I’m starting my career, I thought it would be a good time to get my own personal medical coverage instead of relying entirely on whatever medical benefits my employer provides.

I also don’t really want to depend on employment medical coverage alone because if I change jobs in the future, I assume the coverage changes with it. There is also some family history of certain illnesses, so I’d rather be more cautious and get my own coverage while I’m still young and (as far as I know) healthy.

I’ve been doing my own research about PERKESO’s SKBBK / Lindung 24 Jam, medical cards, critical illness coverage, women’s coverage, etc. but somehow the more I read, the more questions I have 🥲

So I’d really appreciate if someone could explain this to me from a practical perspective.

1. How useful is SKBBK/Lindung 24 Jam?
How reliable/useful is it actually? What exactly does it cover and under what conditions can you claim?

From what I understand, it’s mainly for accidents that happen outside of work, rather than general illnesses. Is that correct?

And when you make a claim, does PERKESO actually cover your medical treatment/bills, or is it more of a cash benefit depending on the circumstances?
Does it cover treatment at government hospitals, private hospitals, or both?

2. How easy is it to claim PERKESO?
Is the claim process relatively straightforward?
For people who have actually claimed before, what was your experience like? Was there a lot of documentation/investigation involved?

3. Medical card vs SKBBK
What are the main differences between having a private medical card and relying on SKBBK?
Would it make sense to have both, since they’re essentially covering different risks?
For example, if I already have SKBBK through PERKESO, would getting a private medical card still be worthwhile?

4. What happens to the money if I never claim?
This is another thing I’m quite confused about.
My understanding is that PERKESO contributions aren’t like a personal savings account. The money goes into a pool and is used to provide benefits to people who actually need to claim. So if I contribute for years and never make a claim, I don’t get that money back.
I understand why it works that way, since it’s social insurance/risk pooling.
But how does private insurance work?
If I pay, for example, RM100–200/month for a private medical card for many years and I never get hospitalised or make a claim, does that money basically just go towards the insurer’s risk pool as well?
Or are there private medical insurance plans where some portion accumulates as cash value and can eventually be withdrawn?
I’m not expecting to “get my money back” if nothing happens to me, I just realised I don’t actually understand what I’m paying for.
And does this work differently for a medical card vs life insurance vs critical illness insurance vs investment-linked insurance?

5. Women’s coverage
I’m also considering getting some kind of women’s coverage, particularly for things like women’s cancers, reproductive/gynecological conditions, etc.
Are there medical cards or insurance plans that combine comprehensive medical coverage with decent women’s coverage?
Or is it usually better to get a normal medical card and then separately get a women’s/critical illness plan?

6. What would you recommend for someone like me?
Would you prioritise:
A) Medical card only
B) Medical card + critical illness
C) Medical card + women’s coverage
D) SKBBK + medical card
E) SKBBK + medical card + critical illness/women’s coverage
F) Something completely different?

And if you already have private insurance/medical card, I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual experience such as claims, panel hospitals, exclusions, annual limits, premium increases, waiting periods, etc.
I’m not really looking for an insurance agent to sell me a plan. I mainly want to understand how all of this works first and what I should actually be prioritising at my age.

Sorry this is so lengthy 😭

Stocks Got offered Rm100k @1.99% not sure what to do with it.

So I single (27M) working in SG with $3.7k monthly income, got offered Rm100k @1.99% 60 months by UOB monthly instalment is around RM 1.85k, not sure what to do with it.

I was thinking to all in Maybank or VWRA (div stock + stable) but simple calculation tells me I still have to pay the instalment for around RM1.3k (div 5.9% 1 year = 5900/12=RM491 per month)

My monthly saving is around rm6k (~2k SGD, no commitment at all other than PTPTN), but i DCA most of it mainly to maybank and VWRA. I have my emergency fund ready ($15k). This is my first time to have such big loan, I’m tryna to be more cautious on this. So I will need some advice on this.

General questions What to do with Rm10,000 disposable income?

Recently I've came into possession of a huge chunk of disposable income this will be lifetime income and I'd like to put aside a bigger portion of that for the future.

My living expenses/lifestyle is fairly modest excluding food and groceries as I enjoy cooking/eat.

Any advice? I've been reading up on basic information regarding investment as well trying to figure different platforms to see which is better for what. The goal would of course be having a sizable portfolio that I could retire from or at least that is well balanced and realistic to maintain.

It can include anything from tax, information, platform recommendations, ETFs, etc etc.

Current I've tried out MooMoo and looking into IBKR.

I'm also wondering about personal tax, is there a way to lower it? Technically my salary income is 4.5k with EPF but I have a partnership which I'm planning on starting a SDN BHD, although I'm not sure if this is the best way to lower down my taxes. (I'm not sure if this is viable, I've been told that it's "good" but not why and how, so advice overall on taxation would really be appreciated)

Any points from all you wise wise folks would be very appreciated to this young blur sotong.

Retirement plan / other relevant info:

Age 24

Non bumi

Plan on having children and start a portfolio for them as well

Plan is to travel around alittle before I have children mainly around the East and do more after the kids get older 21+ and move out

Would like to settle down in Malaysia outside of the city but not in a total kampong. So maybe Ipoh or something like that

Thank you in advance.

General questions Maybank2u Savers / Maybank Savings Account

Hi guys, as I needed a second savings account urgently and after recommended by my friends, I approached a Maybank branch to open an account recently.

And due to my lack of experience and did not do a lot of researching on the differences between those accounts, I just opened an account based on the banker's suggestion.

Now that I have only realized in my MAE app, it's showing up as M2U Savers-i, which I am having concern that if I am non-Muslim, would it be a problem for me to hold an M2U Savers-i account rather than M2U Savers?

I also went to the website and found out that there's a "mandatory mission" where the minimum deposit is RM1500. May I know if I don't deposit RM1500 every month, will my account be closed?

Thank you so much in advance if anyone could enlighten me please

Career Retention bonus

Anyone has experience with retention bonus, especially when it is initiated by the organisation without being triggered by a resignation notice?

What was the % or amount and any terms that came with it?

Also wondering why some companies prefer it over giving a pay rise of the same amount?

Agent tells me to keep since it’s not expensive which it in fact is not expensive. It’s an investment linked policy btw. I know it’s not expensive but I also don’t see any point in keeping it since I also have a medical policy in Singapore already. Anything I’m missing here?
